Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Medical Student We are about to discuss a subject as critical and important to take up as the abdominal aorta; for should we offend the class we are about to portray, there are fifteen hundred medical students, at the different hospitals in London, ripe and ready to avenge themselves upon our devoted cranium, which, although hardened throughout its ligneous formation by many blows, would not be proof against their united efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Medical Student and Other Comicalities Selected and Compiled Perhaps the psychology of laughter has never been better expressed than by Hazlitt. "Man," says Hazlitt, "is the only animal that laughs, for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are and what they ought to be." Laughter, then, is one of the distinguishing features of man. In aiding every medical man to assert and show his superiority over other animals, I feel confident that my present effort will receive the same appreciation which was accorded to the "Medical Rhymes." The London Medical Student is taken from the London Punch, where it was published about a half a century ago. To speak of the merits of Punch were as absurd as to paint the beauty of a rose: it is now, as it was formerly, the representative journal of English wit and humor. Despite my strenuous efforts I could not detect who wrote the sparkling portraiture of medical-student-life in the greatest metropolis of the world, but I was convinced by my investigation that its authorship belongs to Hood, Dickens, Thackeray, Mark Lemon, or Douglas Jerrold. Of one thing, however, I am absolutely certain, that is, that I am the first to introduce my friends, Mr. Muff and J. Randall, Esq., to the medical profession at large. They will not find them to be dull companions. After an interview with these London students, I fear my brethren in medicine will have to adjust their collars; therefore I suggest that they be taken off before the perusal of this book is begun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of the London Medical Student: And Curiosities of Medical Experience WE are about to discuss a subject as critical and im portant to take up as the abdominal aorta; for should we offend the class we are about to portray, there are fifteen hundred medical students, arrived this week in London, ripe and ready to avenge themselves upon our devoted cranium, which, although hardened throughout its ligne ous formation by many blows, would not be proof against their united efforts. And we scarcely know how or where to begin. The instincts and different phases, under which this interesting race appears, are so numerous, that far from complaining of the paucity of materials we have to work upon, we are overwhelmed by mental suggestions, and rapidly dissolving views, of the various classes from Guy's to the London University, from St. George's to the London Hospital, perpetually crowding upon our brains (if we have any), and rendering our ideas as completely muddled as those of a new man who has, for the first week of October, attended every single lecture in the day, from the commencement of chemistry, at nine in the morning, to the close of surgery, at eight in the evening. Lecture! Auspicious word! We have a beginning prompted by the mere sound. We will address you, medical stu dents, according to the style you are most accustomed to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Medical Student's Letters to His Parents You will see from the above address where I am after my long voyage across the blue Atlantic. Up to the last two days at sea the weather was fine, and time passed smoothly and pleasantly with the fifty saloon passengers on board. I saw a good deal of an Englishman, a member of the House of Commons, whom I expect to meet again in London. About ten o'clock Saturday night, however, a gale overtook us. As I was not seasick, I re mained on the bridge with the first officer until the early morning, when even the bridge became too sloppy for anyone but a sailor. Fortunately the wind was with us. We shipped one or two seas and the mail room was flooded. On Sunday while at lunch, a huge wave struck us and came rushing down the hatchways, and in the afternoon the smoking room was almost carried away, and I found myself up to my knees in water before I knew where I was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to Medical Diagnosis The following pages were originally designed to assist the students attending the medical out-patient department of the London Hospital. The plan of instruction generally pursued there is to give to each pupil a succession of cases of a similar character. In this way, whilst one is prac tising the laryngoscope, another is studying auscultation, a third affections of the nervous svstem, and so on. After examining a case, the student is expected to state his diagnosis, and the treatment he would adopt. Although this method of individual instruction is doubtless more beneficial than the practice of teaching in classes, yet it necessarily involves a constant repetition on the part of the teacher. To obviate the loss of time thus incurred, I commenced to write out some general rules for diagnosis, which the student might keep beside him as a guide in his examinations. It was afterwards suggested to me to elabo rate the idea, and hence the appearance of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Medical Student, Vol. 1 of 2 The profession which he had chosen was well adapted for the study of the human mind and the observation of frail nature, stripped of its out ward trappings. The mind depressed with disease becomes careless of the worldly tinsel that usually screens its failings. The cloak of hypo otiay is no longer available; and when the patient has arrived at the state which leads him to seek for comfort from that source where it is never denied, the physician in such cases will always find suitable sub jeeta for deep thought and serious meditation. While attending the hospitals, Douglas had Mple opportunity for stu dy. Many of his tales are founded on incidents which be witnessed there, and which are sometimes pictured with a vividness and minuteness of detail that never fail to awaken an interest in the reader; occasionally too, by the way, to create a feeling something akin to horror. From such passages. Many will conclude that they were penned by an individual of gloomy character and morbid imagination. But it is not from his writ ings that a just idea of his powers or character can be formed, though the public, Of course, will judge of him from his compositions. Those who were long intimate with him knew well that his mind partook largely of the cheerful gaiety characteristic of buoyant youth, and had nothing of that gloom which is remarkable in his writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Principles and Practice of Medicine: For the Use of Medical Students and Practitioners IN this volume I have endeavored to present, in addition to the fruits of my own observation and experience, the substance of the latest editions of the works of Ziegler, Hallopeau, Eichhorst, Cornil, and Babes, and of the collaborators of the Traité de Médecine. In order to secure the greatest possible brevity, matters of an historical and controversial nature have been omitted, and every effort has been made to exclude whatever is not absolutely essential for the information of the student. Numerous interesting topics have accordingly received but brief notice. It has seemed best to aim at the construction of a definite framework which the future physician can clothe with the results of subsequent reading and observation.
