They fail in checking the disease, and they are apt to be followed by considerable debility of the stomach and general sys tem, - states which it would be better to avoid where the patient has to run through the course of a long and exhausting dis ease. If called to acase of fever in which you cannot give an emetic, there are two or three other remedial agents you may employ to moderate the feverish excite ment, and render the disease milder and more manageable during its progress. One of these is James's powder, with which you may combine blue pill or hydrargyrum cum creta, if necessary, giving two 0r three grains Of each every third or fourth hour, according to circum stances. Another remedy, which many are in the habit of using, particularly where the fever is accompanied with symp toms of inflammatory excitement, is a weak solution of tartar emetic. Two grains of tartar emetic may be dissolved in' a' pint of barley-water; and of this mixture a table-spoonful may be taken every second hour.' These are good and useful remedies in the first stage of fever they moderate the feverish excitement, act gently on the bowels, and produce more or less diaphoresis. The topics I refer to are the varieties observed in morbus cordis, arising out of differences in different instances, in the distribution of the hypertrophy and enlargement; that condition being sometimes, it has been held, altogether wanting, but in most cases present, though not always equally di vided between the sides and cavities. And in the first place, let me guard my self against the suspicion of an unworthy desire to depreciate the meritorious and most useful labours of descriptive patho logists, by stating that [fully admit the existence, abstractedly considered, of al most every variety of heart disease pointed out by those who have studied the heart most exclusively after the Natural History method; and in the second place, that I acknowledge that most of the ya. When a vessel is completely divided transversely, the blood flows rapidly. If the artery be large, the external wound extensive, and not soon united, the flow of blood usually continues until the animal dies. 1f the wound be immediately brought together, death fol lows less rapidly, or syncope may happen, and the hmmorrhage be completely sus pended, or it may reappear at intervals, until the animal dies or until he recovers.
