Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Lancet, 1868: A Journal of British and Foreign Medical, Surgical and Chemical Science, Criticism, Literature and News And this brings us to the consideration of those cases in which the very acute symptoms have subsided, but where yet the disease is very dis tressing and severe. It is this form which is more likely to appear before you in hospitals. Frequent desire to micturate, the forcing attend ing it, and turbidly-passed urine, are the most prominent symptoms. The general treatment must much depend u on the original cause. Opiates form the most re ia ble remedies: decoction of pariera with either, acids or alkalies, according as it is desired to check the abnormal state of the urine. In some Of the milder cases the vegetable astringents, as uva ursi and gallic acid, do good in others, the tincture of muriate of iron, with tincture of opium. Book excerpt: This collection of papers draws on insights from social anthropology to illuminate historical material, and presents a set of closely integrated studies on the inter-connections between feminism and medical, social and educational ideas in the nineteenth century. Throughout the book evidence from both the USA and UK shows that feminists had to operate in a restricting and complex social environment in which the concept of "the lady" and the ideal of the saintly mother defined the nineteenth-century woman’s cultural and physical world.

Book Synopsis John Hughlings Jackson by : Samuel H. Greenblatt
Download or read book John Hughlings Jackson written by Samuel H. Greenblatt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a preeminent British neurologist who is widely recognized today as one of the leading founders of modern clinical neurology and neuroscience. He had a unique ability to translate messy clinical data into viable neuroscientific conceptions. This ability served him well, because in his early years knowledge of cerebral organization was quite rudimentary. Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) faced the same problem at the same time in the 1860s, and each man recognized the other's work at a fundamental level. Although Jackson's historical standing has increased over the century since his death, there is only one full-length biography, the Critchleys' John Hughlings Jackson: Father of English Neurology (OUP 1998). Like the numerous articles and chapters that have been written about Jackson, that book is sometimes inaccurate and often hagiographic. In this new biography, John Hughlings Jackson: Clinical Neurology, Evolution and Victorian Brain Science, Samuel H. Greenblatt provides a critical analysis of Jackson's work within the professional, social, and intellectual contexts of his Victorian milieu. The book follows Jackson's intellectual development through a close examination of his published writings, in chronological order, from the case reports and Suggestions of his early medical career to the major lectures he delivered in his later years. The text is supplemented with a comprehensive bibliography of Jackson's writings that will be of practical use to scholars of his work.
