Book excerpt: "The "tungsten bronzes" are a series of anionic substitutional solid solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal metatungsates and tungstic oxide. They are neither alloys or intermetallic compounds, the term "tungsten bronzes" was adopted because of their remarkable metallic properties -- e.g., high electrical conductivity, metallic luster on the crystal, and high specific gravity. Also owing to their intense and vivid colors and chemical inactivity it was possible to use them in the paint industry as a substitute for the so-called "bronze powders", the latter term is applied to the finely divided metal powders, such as aluminum, copper, brass, and bronze powders. The paint made of these tungsten bronzes with some binding materials are used to protect metal surfaces and for ornamental purpose. The properties and structure of some of these tungsten bronzes are still unknown; in the last two decades, no published investigation about lithium tungsten bronzes has been made. The present work is intended to find out the structure and some other properties of the lithium tungsten bronzes, the solubility of tungstic oxide in the bronzes, and the lattice changes with increasing amount of WO3 in such a solid solution series"--Introduction, leaves 1-2.

Book excerpt: Among the transition metal oxides, tungsten bronzes have attained considerable attention due to their chemical, electrical and optical properties which depend on the type of alkali-metal atom and its composition. The term tungsten bronze is applied to the non-stoichiometric compounds of general formula MxWO3 (0 > x > 1), where M is an alkali-metal atom. The common structural feature of these materials is the WO6 octahedra which are repeated along three directions through corner sharing. This structural arrangement provides various kinds of tunnels, which are at least partly occupied by alkali metal atoms. These materials undergo one or more structural phase transitions depending on the content of alkali metal x. The main part of this book is focused on LixWO3-PTB, in order to explore the stability field in the conventional solid state synthesis techniques and to investigate in particular their spectral properties. For polarised micro reflectivity, single crystals of LixWO3 are also prepared by chemical vapour transport method. The spectral and structural properties of Nb-doped and Mo-doped alkali metal tungsten bronzes, AxMyW1-yO3 (A = Li, Na, Cs and M = Nb, Mo) are also discussed.
