Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Persia Now it is, I think, always desirable in the first instance to get a clear idea of the ground covered by a subject of which one proposes to treat. Modern, post-muhammadan, Persian literature - a literature covering a period Of about a thousand years - is what I propose to discuss this afternoon but I must Observe in passing that a comprehensive survey of the literature or literatures of Persia would include more than this. There are three older pre-muhammadan literatures well worthy of. Study which belong to Persia; and, though I shall not have time to discuss them to - day, I must at least mention them. I have tried in a modest way to open it up for students of poetry and students of religion, who will I trust at least recognise from these pages that the subject is worth pursuing further. The little book ventures on ground which is full of pitfalls for investigators who are not able to give undivided attention. I have therefore appreciated very specially the help of two old friends who have looked over my proofs - the Editor, with whom I read the Gathas under Cowell long ago, and (for the first half of the book) Prof. Williams Jackson, whose paramount authority in Iranian subjects every expert knows. To them and to other scholars named in the book itself I offer very warm thanks, only asking the reader not to hold them responsible when I have dared to be original - and very likely wrong. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Persia To the Orientalist is known the extreme dith culty of conveying in any European tongue the exact meaning of the poet: the Germans have perhaps succeeded best in consequence of the con struction of their language; but mere words alone in Persian sometimes express so much that the translator finds all his efforts unavailing to render them of the same force. For instance, the Per sians have words and names which at one view exhibit many qualities without more explanation, and which throw a charm over their songs, impos sible to reach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for Persia None of my predecessors (and they may be counted on the fingers) who have taken the almost impassable route between Eastern Russia (via Tabriz) to Teheran having thought fit to record their experiences, it devolves upon my unworthy self to narrate mine in this veritable "terra incognita." The interest lately awakened in England with reference to Persian affairs, together with the lamentable loss of British prestige and British influence, and the overwhelming power of Russia - as they appeared to me - must be my further excuse for bringing them to the notice of all lovers of king and country, in the earnest hope that means may be found to retrieve the paramount supremacy of England in a country where once it was without a rival. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Happenings in Persia I would, then, ask my Persian friends to believe that my criticism is actuated by no feeling of un friendliness, but Solely by a desire to present facts in their true colours. I have to acknowledge my great indebtedness to H. H. Hormoz Mirza for having kindly offered to read that portion of this book which had been written prior to my departure from Persia, and for having placed at my disposal his wide knowledge regarding events and conditions. The Opinions expressed are, however, my own, since he agreed with me that it would be out of place for a native of the country to attempt to influence the impression formed by a soj ourner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia The Persian Empire occupies the western and larger part of the Iranian plateau, which is situated between the Indus on the east and the Tigris and Euphrates on the west. Its altitude is considerable. Shiraz and Kerman in the south, Isfahan in the centre, and Kermanshah and Hamadan in the west all lie above 5,000 feet. In the north the altitude of Tabriz is over 4,000 feet and that of Teheran (the capital) and Meshed over 3,000 feet. The area of the country is enormous. The traveller who would pass from east to west in the north would traverse some 1,200 miles. From north to south the distance would average 600 to 700 miles. The snow and rainfall are scanty, averaging ten inches in the north and five inches in the south. On the other hand, in the provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, the rainfall is very heavy. On the plateau the climate is intensely dry, with hot days and cold nights. In the Caspian provinces the heavy rainfall creates a moist, malarious, and most unhealthy climate. In the narrow trip of country bordering the Persian Gulf the climate, except close to the sea, is intensely hot and dry. So scanty is the rainfall in view of the power of the sun hat, but for the high ranges, the country would be a desert. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia by a Persian: Personal Experiences, Manners, Customs, Habits, Religious and Social Life in Persia While out on lecture tours in this country, I have been asked many questions about the manners, customs, and peculiarities of my own people. These questions I have found it very difficult to answer in the little volume, Darkness and Daybreak, so as to give anything like a clear picture either of the people or the country in the brief time that I had to answer them under such circumstances, and, hence this book which I now present to the public, with the earnest hope that it may find a welcome.
