Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... THE LITERATURE OF CHECKERS. I W1ll1am Payne. An Introduction to the Game of Draughts. London, 1756. Last page number, 67.. Present value, $15. This is the first work on the game of checkers printed in the English language. It contains fifty games, fourteen critical situations, and twenty-four stroke problems. The dedication notice and preface were written by Dr. Samuel Johnson, the lexicographer; but his name does not appear. This book has held the respect of all succeeding checker authors and compilers. A reprint, bearing the same date as the original issue, was published in (perhaps) 1795. In the original the name of the author on the title page is followed by the line, "Teacher of the Mathematics." In the reprint the word "the" is omitted from the line. In the fortysixth game of the original the word "drawn" does not appear at the end of the play. In the reprint it does appear. The tailpiece ornamenting page 59 of the original may be roughly described as a crown resting on a three-cornered table. The tailpiece to the same page of the reprint may also be roughly described as a bouquet supported by two birds. The reprint is worth $10 a copy. 2 Hoyle's Games. The first edition of this perennial handbook, a treatise on the game of whist by Edmond Hoyle, was issued in 1742. The second and third editions were issued in the succeeding year, 1743. An article on chess appeared in the edition of 1761. In 1779 Hoyle's Games, revised and corrected by Charles Jones, opened its pages to the game of checkers for the first time, by reprinting a part of Payne's work, under headlines reading as follows: "By permission of Mr. Payne; an extract from his game of draughts. Containing twenty select games, together with many critical situations for drawn...

This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Volume II, at this moment is one of the most profound, rigorous and well-documented investigations ever into the history of draughts or chess. In this monumental work, around one thousand books dealing with history, bibliography, technical treatises, literature, general culture, etc. were carefully studied and referenced. The intersection between the games of chess and draughts was much greater than was first thought, as the present research demonstrates. And as could not be otherwise: with the work and cooperation of one of the all-time great figures of the history of draughts and a chess historian specialized in the medieval and renaissance period and technical bibliography, everything would out. Indeed, a solid foundation on which to accommodate a truth that had so fiercely resisted the light of day. If this were not the case, without this team work, a lot, and maybe too much, time would have gone by until everything would have finally settled into its rightful place.

This book was released on 2015-10-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1987 we have defended in articles that the Spanish queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabel la Católica) was the new chess queen (dama) on the chessboard. Other publications were in 1990, 1994, 1997, and 2004. And of course, Marilyn Yalom studied our book during her visit to the National Library in The Hague (Holland) before she wrote Birth of the Chess Queen in 2004. In her book one cannot see that in 1987, 1990, and 1994 we already published material about Isabel la Catolica (Isabel I of Castile) being the new powerful dama or chess queen on the chessboard. In other words we can state here that we have been studying Spanish history and its chess literature for over 30 years. Since 2003 we have also known the development of the new bishop in chess.

Book excerpt: On Derby Day, 1893, at Chicago's Washington Park racetrack, Jack Preston first encounters Checkers, a down-and-out tout whose hot tip on the third race costs the novice a total of $35, and marks the beginning of a strange friendship. Although a warm, kindly, truthful chap with an over-abundance of generosity and pride in his make-up, Checkers is a born loser whose life is a study in bad luck, poor judgment, and adversity. In an attempt to help him, Preston becomes friend, counselor, and financial guardian for the hapless youth, until, his spirits buoyed by promises of a brighter future, Checkers decides to try his luck again in a world hostile to him. Checkers is a brilliant character study. Henry Martyn Blossom was a playwright and lyricist.
