Book Synopsis A Commentary on Romans with Old Testament Allusions by : Bob Cunningham
Download or read book A Commentary on Romans with Old Testament Allusions written by Bob Cunningham and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romans is almost universally celebrated to be one of the greatest Christian writings ever penned. It is the most detailed explanation of the gospel and the relationship between faith and righteousness in the New Testament. Paul accomplishes this by relying heavily on Old Testament passages that provided a foundation for many of the arguments he used to enlighten the Israelites of God’s plan to include the Gentiles as his people along with them. It takes one on a journey to explore how that gospel works to bring man to a place of salvation through obedience by baptism into Christ (Gal 3:27). Its impact on the lives of many noted religious leaders throughout history during the Protestant Reformation and Restoration Movements cannot be underestimated. Such leaders as Augustine, John Chrysostom, John and Charles Wesley, Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Thomas and Alexander Campbell have all expressed the profound impact Romans had on their lives. Luther sparked the greatest religious revival at the time, the Protestant Reformation at Wittenberg in 1517 when he nailed 95 theses to the door of Castle Church which he said was inspired by his reading of the book of Romans. The Campbells began the Restoration Movement during the early 19th century around the time of the “Great Awakening” in the early frontier days, with a call of restoring the pure gospel that Paul explained in the book of Romans. The overarching theme throughout its 16 chapters is to reveal God’s sovereign plan of justification and sanctification to both Jew and Gentile in the church through the gospel where the righteousness of God is revealed. (Romans 1:17) It is God’s blueprint as to how we obtain and maintain faith and what it means to live a righteous life before God.
Book Synopsis Controlling the Thought Life by : Barrington C. Hibbert
Download or read book Controlling the Thought Life written by Barrington C. Hibbert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mind is where most of the battles in your life are won or lost. If the thought life is obedience to Christ, you can live a more spiritually fulfilled and successful life. In Controlling the Thought Life, author Barrington C. Hibbert helps you look at your negative thoughts in light of God’s word and discusses how to experience better outcomes in many areas of your life. Hibbert addresses the thought life from a biblical perspective rather than from a psychological one. While psychology provides many insights, and offers some solutions, it is inadequate to solve the human problem, for at the heart, humanity’s problem is the sin nature, which only God can fix. Controlling the Thought Life provides an inspired, straightforward, and easy-to-read discussion on an array of dysfunctional thoughts. It examines these chosen thoughts, applies God’s word to them, and encourages you to obey what Christ’s word has to say about them rather than letting these thoughts dominate you. Hibbert shows that you can be transformed by a renewed mind and can strengthen your walk with Christ.

Book Synopsis The Pulpit Commentary, Volume 7 by : Spence-Jones, Henry
Download or read book The Pulpit Commentary, Volume 7 written by Spence-Jones, Henry and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 10233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Book Synopsis Ecclesiastes: An Earth Bible Commentary by : Marie Turner
Download or read book Ecclesiastes: An Earth Bible Commentary written by Marie Turner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qoheleth is one of the most challenging and intriguing of the biblical authors. Above all, he is attentive to life's realities, neither optimistic about the world nor unappreciative of its goodness and pleasures. In this volume, Turner examines the writings of Qoheleth in the book of Ecclesiastes and provides an ecological reading of the text that gives readers clear insights into how biblical wisdom literature can be used to respond to the challenges facing the environment in the present day, as well as advancing the field of ecological hermeneutics. In this commentary Turner looks at the concept of Qoheleth's 'eternal earth', moving through the chapters of Ecclesiastes with an ear attuned to the voice of the Earth as it struggles to be heard above the voice of the economy. Such a voice is not necessarily antagonistic to that of Earth, but neither is it neutral. The ecological reader knows that a prudent economy is necessary for living, but if it is given precedence at the expense of Earth, there will be no future, let alone 'eternity', for Earth. Eco-justice demands that contemporary readers should be mindful of future generations and heed Qoheleth's counsel to value the fruits of one's labour without greed, allowing ecological hermeneutics to provide insights into contemporary environmental issues. Illustrating how a biblical framework for environmentally responsible living may be generated, Turner's analysis is vital both to those studying Qoheleth and to those invested in the Bible and ecology.
