Excerpt: ...in which numbers were wounded on both sides and one captain (Bitting) killed. The mutineers were so strong as, not only to overcome all opposition but to compel the three regiments named to join their ranks; when, numbering 1,300 strong, the march was taken up for Philadelphia via Princeton. Wayne immediately dispatched two of his leading officers to Philadelphia, to apprise Congress of the movement. He wrote hurriedly to Washington detailing the particulars Irving says the men were under the influence of liquor. We do not know his authority for this statement. If they had had an additional glass of grog, in honor of the New Year, it was not the cause of the outbreak which, evidently, had long been contemplated and arranged for the day upon which they should have been (according to their interpretation of their enlistment) discharged. of the affair, and then followed on after the men, striving by all means in his power to bring them back to duty--or, at least, to forego their desertion of their quarters, until deputit could be sent to Congress to arrange all difficulties. They would not be stayed. Wayne, gallantly assisted by Cols. Butler and Stewart, then ordered out the militia. "Alarmfires were kindled upon the hills; alarm-guns boomed from post to post," says Irving; "the country was soon on the 'alert." Advancing to Princeton a halt was there made by the leaders of the insurrectionists--fearing to pass beyond that point, and feeling strong in it. Philadelphia was thrown into consternation by the news. Congress immediately dispatched a committee to meet the insurgents. President Reed and other State officers also hastened toward the scene of excitement, halting at Trenton, along with the committee, in order to...

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes excerpts of contemporary accounts *Includes a bibliography for further reading "Issue the orders Sir, and I will storm Hell." - Mad Anthony Wayne The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the "shot heard 'round the world" to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington & Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Boston Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest. One of the most unique aspects of the Revolutionary War is that a number of the most recognizable American heroes of that war hailed from overseas. When the Revolution began, the Continental Army sported numerous volunteers from Ireland, Scotland, virtually every European nation between France and Russia, and men from the northern and southern borders of the European continent. This is understandable, given that at the start of the war, military confrontations between the world powers had become so common that combat was raised to the status of a fine art, consuming a large portion of time for adolescent males in training and comprising a sizeable component of the economy. Weaponry was developed to a degree of quality not accessible to most North Americans, and European aristocrats were reared in the mastery of swordsmanship with an emphasis on the saber for military use. Likewise, the cavalry, buoyed by a tradition of expert horsemanship and saddle-based combat, was a fighting force largely beyond reach for colonists, which meant that fighting on horses was an undeveloped practice in the fledgling Continental Army, and the American military did not yet fully comprehend the value of cavalry units. Few sword masters were to find their way to North America in time for the war, and the typical American musket was a fair hunting weapon rather than a military one. Even the foot soldier knew little of European military discipline. All of this helps explain why, aside from George Washington, many Americans are likely able to name just as many foreign generals on the rebel side as American generals. While names like Lafayette, Pulaski, Kościuszko, and Baron von Steuben are quickly associated with the Revolution, American officers like Nathanael Greene, Anthony Wayne, Horatio Gates, Henry Knox, and Light-Horse Harry Lee are often overlooked. In fact, Wayne was one of early America's most important commanders, from his distinguished service in the Revolutionary War to leading soldiers against various Native American bands along the frontier after America secured its independence. Wayne played critical roles in several of the Revolution's most noteworthy campaigns, from the fateful Quebec invasion of 1775-1776 to the Yorktown campaign that ended the major fighting in 1781, with crucial actions at places like Valley Forge and Stony Point. He had been promoted to Major General by the time the war ended, and when he died near the end of the 18th century while still on active duty, few American military officers had left behind as influential legacy as the daring, but almost always successful general. Mad Anthony Wayne: The Life and Legacy of the Famous Revolutionary War General profiles one of the Revolutionary War's most famous soldiers. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Wayne like never before.

Book excerpt: This describes the Historical background about the early Indians Wars that were basically mentioned, but not really exemplified as the integral part of History that played a major role into the formation of the United States. When President George Washington received disturbing news from the Ohio Territory, the surrounding areas within the Great Lakes Region, pertaining to the incursions from the Indians. decided to send experienced Indian Fighters whom he felt could control the situations. These individuals have had prior experience with dealing with the Indians during the American Revolution. After a few failed attempts, from the commanders that faced the Indians. Washington knew of one particular individual who had a strong, personality, and was highly dependable. His name was General Anthony Wayne. Refered to as "Mad". This name was given to him, during the Revolutionary War, because of his tenacity, and courage . The Indians eventually came to fear Anthony Wayne, because of his tactics he used , no matter what obstacles faced him. One aspect is the most important, as Dr. Knopf noted in 1975. "These battles were fought against the Indians, it had nothing to do with land". General Anthony Wayne also played an important part for The "Treaty of Greenville" which became the final act.

Excerpt: ...with 200 Pennsylvanians, heading the column. General Woodford's brigade (600 men) came next, General Varnum following with 600 men, and then came Wayne with his picked men, 1,000 in number, and 2 pieces of field-artillery. After Wayne came other brigades under Scott and Maxwell, making in all nearly 5,000 men and 12 pieces of artillery. This column was frequently halted by Lee during its march, and at one of these halts Wayne was ordered to leave his picked men, take command of 600 men, and with them go forward to beat up the country and locate the enemy's rear-guard. It was an order to Wayne's taste, and crossing the west ravine, through which flows Wemrock Brook, he soon discovered a small covering party of the enemy, and made them fly in "very great disorder and confusion." In the meantime Sir Henry Clinton had been careful to place the best of his command in the rear of all, because he was looking for an attack. As Clinton marched away Wayne saw him, and sent a messenger to Lee asking that "the troops might be pushed on." Lee, of course, omitted to push on, until he learned that a party, 800 or 900 strong, had stopped to the east of the court-house, and were plainly waiting for the Americans. Lee then ordered Wayne, whose earnestness and activity were manifest, to take 700 men from his Pennsylvanians (Butler with his battalion of 200 being among them), with two pieces of artillery, and charge this covering party of at least 800 men. And "with his wonted gallantry, General Wayne did so." This Wayne did so effectually that Clinton sent back the Queen's light dragoons to help the 800 resist the 700 Pennsylvanians. As the dragoons came galloping back, Wayne's men promptly formed to receive them, with Butler's...
