These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside From Workhouse to Westminster - The Life Story of Will Crooks, M.P.: Look inside the book: Sights like these of his childhood, with the shuddering memories of his own dark days in thePg 15 workhouse and the workhouse school, made him register a vow, little chap though he was at the time, that when he grew up to be a man he would do all he could to make better and brighter the lot of the inmates, especially that of the boys and girls. ...Many a time I have journeyed with him down to his home in East London, after he had finished a hard day's work in Parliament or on the London County Council, possibly having been defeated on some public question in a way that would make many men despair; and yet how easily he has put aside all the worries and work, and made the journey delightful by his unfailing fund of Cockney anecdotes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Workhouse to Westminster: The Life Story of Will Crooks This record of the career of a man whom I have known intimately in his public and private life for over a dozen years can claim at least one distinction. It is the first biography of a working man who has deliberately chosen to remain in the ranks of working men as well as in their service. From the day in the early 'nineties when he was called upon to decide between a prospective partnership in a prosperous business and the hard, joyless life of a Labour representative, with poverty for his lot and slander for his reward, he has adhered to the principle he then laid down, consistently refusing ever since the many invitations received from various quarters to come up higher. There have been endless biographies of men who have risen from the ranks of Labour and then deserted those ranks for wealthy circles. Will Crooks, in his own words, has not risen from the ranks; he is still in the ranks, standing four-square with the working classes against monopoly and privilege. This book would have been an autobiography rather than a biography could I have had my way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 'Where there's a Will, there's a way' is a biographical, fact based account written in novel format of the remarkable life story of Labour MP, social reformer and working class hero, Will Crooks. As a child, Crooks was sent to a Victorian Workhouse when his family were plunged into poverty in London's East End. In spite of this impoverished start in life, or indeed because of it, Crooks grew to become a pioneer of the Labour movement, fighting for social justice and change. He became only the fourth ever Labour MP; the first ever Labour Mayor in London and a Privy Counsellor to King George V. Crooks fought tirelessly for the rights of the common man, even while overcoming great personal tragedy in his own life. 'Where there's a Will, there's a way' is set against the backdrop of the birth and rise of the British Labour Party, at the time of Britain's awakening social conscience when the seeds of the country's welfare state were sown.

This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beveridge defined full employment as a state where there are slightly more vacant jobs than there are available workers, or not more than 3% of the total workforce. This book discusses how this goal might be achieved, beginning with the thesis that because individual employers are not capable of creating full employment, it must be the responsibility of the state. Beveridge claimed that the upward pressure on wages, due to the increased bargaining strength of labour, would be eased by rising productivity, and kept in check by a system of wage arbitration. The cooperation of workers would be secured by the common interest in the ideal of full employment. Alternative measures for achieving full employment included Keynesian-style fiscal regulation, direct control of manpower, and state control of the means of production. The impetus behind Beveridge's thinking was social justice and the creation of an ideal new society after the war. The book was written in the context of an economy which would have to transfer from wartime direction to peace time. It was then updated in 1960, following a decade where the average unemployment rate in Britain was in fact nearly 1.5%.

Book excerpt: Celebrating the centenary of the Parliamentary Labour Party, this fascinating book commemorates the twenty-nine founding Labour MPs elected in 1906, including Labour’s first Prime Minister, first Chancellor of the Exchequer, first Minister of Labour, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. With a foreword by Tony Blair, Men Who Made Labour focuses on the pioneers’ origins, expectations, world vision and achievements in the context of early twentieth-century conditions, when the prospect of any Labour government was still a distant dream. Drawing upon a vast array of previously unpublished material, and with obituaries primarily written by the twenty-first century successors to those original MPs, the text provides a unique insight into how today’s politicians view their party’s past – ensuring that it is an excellent resource for all politics and modern history students, as well as general readers with an interest in the area.
