Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 2 MY dear poole, At present I have taken up the pen solely on Coleridge's account, and must confine my letter to him and his affairs. I know how much you will be concerned to hear that his health cannot be said to be much better, indeed any better at all. He is apparently quite well one day, and the next the fit comes on him again with as much violence as ever. These repeated shocks cannot but greatly weaken his constitution; and he is himself afraid that, as the disease (which is manifestly gout) keeps much about his stomach, he may be carried off by it, with little or no warning. We all here feel deeply persuaded that nothing can do him any effectual good, but a change of climate. And it is, on this subject that I have now written to you. The place which he thinks of going to is the Azores; both for the climate and the baths - which are known to be exceedingly salutary in cases of gout and rheumatism and on account of the cheapness of living there, and the little expense in getting thither. But you know well how poor Coleridge is situated with respect to money affairs; indeed, it will be impossible for him to accomplish the journey without some assistance. Further, it seems to me absolutely necessary that this should be procured in a manner the least burthensome to his feelings possible. If the thought of it should hang upon his mind when he is away, it will undo, or rather prevent, all the salutary effects of the climate. I have thought it my duty to mention these circumstances to you, as being a person more interested than perhaps any other in what befalls our common friend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 3 IN the autumn of 1820, Wordsworth, with his wife and sister, Mr. And Mrs. Monkhouse, and Miss Horrocks (a sister of Mrs. Monkhouse), left England together for a tour on the Conti nent. They started from Dover on the 11th of July, went by Brussels to Cologne, up the Rhine to Switzerland, were joined by Henry Crabb Robinson at Lucerne, crossed over to the Italian lakes and Milan, came back to Switzerland, and through France to Paris, where they spent a month. Return ing to London in November, they stayed some time in town, and went north by Cambridge and Coleorton, arriving at Rydal Mount on Christmas Eve. Dorothy Wordsworth wrote a Journal of this Tour, taking notes at the time, and extending them on her return to Westmoreland. Mrs. Wordsworth kept another (briefer) record of the same journey; Mr. Crabb Robinson also wrote a diary of it. Wordsworth memorialised the tour in a series of poems, very few of which were written at the time; and when he wrote them afterwards at Rydal Mount, it is evident that he had frequent recourse to the two family Journals, particularly to his sister's. Writing to Mrs. Clarkson from Coblenz, July 22d, Dorothy said: Journals we shall have in abundance; for all, except my brother and Mr. Monkhouse, keep a Journal. Mine is nothing but notes, unintelligible to any one but myself. I look for ward, however, to many, a pleasant hour's employment at Rydal Mount in filling up the chasms. Vol. III. Extracts from the Journals of Mrs. And Miss Wordsworth have been given in Volume as notes supplementary to the poems of this Continental Tour; and it is hard to say whether the jottings taken at the time by his wife, or the extended Journal afterwards written out by his sister, is the more admirable, both as a record of travel, and as a commentary on the poet's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 No reader of this Life of Wordsworth can regret, so much as the author does, -the long delay that has md in its publication. Although the? First of the three volumes hasbeenprinted for more thanayear, the issue of the work has been postponed from causes too numerous to mention. When the edition of the Works of Wordsworth - to which this Life was to be an appendix - was projected, eight years ago, the first idea was that a single volume would suffice, both for a Biography of the poet, and for a criticalessayuponhim. Assoou as the work of research began, however, so much new material accumulated from many sources, that it was judged expedient, not only to extend the Biography from one volume to two, and ultimately to three, but to ex clude the critical Essay, reserving it for a future occasion, and a difl'erent purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Wordsworth, Vol. 1: His Life, Works, and Influence I now come to the pleasantest part of my long task, the expression of indebtedness and gratitude to those who have helped me. And first I recall with reverence the sunny mornings of a happy childhood when my mother trained me to memorize Wordsworth's poems, and instilled into my heart a love for his name. It was, I believe, at the suggestion of my wife, and largely because of her love for Wordsworth, that I undertook to write this book. In hours of discouragement she has held me to my task, and at all times her help has proved invaluable. To M. Legouis I am grateful, not only for his book - which is beyond praise, and has estab lished a new standard in English biography (for it has been perfectly translated) - but for many valuable sug gestions made to me in private. Mr. Gordon Words worth, the poet's grandson, has generously placed at my disposal much unprinted material, has allowed me to examine the manuscripts of Dorothy Wordsworth's journals, and has assisted me in matters of interpreta tion as well as in matters of fact. He and Mr. Frank E. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prelude: Or Growth of a Poet's Mind; An Autobiographical Poem The gods talk in the breath of the woods, They talk in the shaken pine, And fill the long reach of the old seashore With dialogue divine. And the poet who overhears Some random word they say, Is the fated man of men Whom the ages must obey. It is interesting in our survey of the past to study the crises in the world's history, and notice how Providence has, by particular surroundings and education, prepared special men for special emergencies. Seers, prophets, and teachers have been divinely raised up to interpret the mind of God to men, the Heroes, Sages, Bards sublime, And all that fetched the flowing rhyme From genuine springs. In one of these crises, - that of the last half of the eighteenth century, - there was a stirring of the depths in all departments of human life. Literature, the outcome of the whole life of a people, was consequently involved in the revolutionary conflagration which ran over all the European world, from the ashes of which arose new ideas of mankind. Poetry had been removed from its natural home, the country, and was forced to do service in the artificial surroundings of city life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth, With a Memoir, Vol. 3 of 3: Seven Volumes in Three The title-page announces that this is only a portion of a poem; and the Reader must be here apprised that it belongs to the second part of a long and laborious Work, which is to consist of three parts. - The Author will candidly acknowledge that, if the first of these had been completed, and in such a manner as to satisfy his own mind, he should have preferred the natural order of publi cation, and have given that to the world first; but, as the second division of the Work was designed to refer more to passing events, and to an existing state of things, than the others were meant to do, more continuous exertion was naturally bestowed upon it, and greater progress made here than in the rest of the poem; and as this part does not depend upon the preceding to adegree which will materially injure its own peculiar interest, the Author, complying with the earnest entreaties of some valued Friends, presents the following pages to the Public. In reading the proof, I have sometimes felt this myself; for instance, it may seem the ease in the analysis of the elements of tragic genius suggested by poems so short but so full and so vital as those of Lao damia and Dion. The close personal intimacy, the frequent intercourse he had enjoyed with the venerable old man who had shown him an all but fatherly affection, so far from dulling his sense of what was due to such a character, only served to intensify it, and nothing would have given him greater pain than to dwell on the passing weak nesses, and the commonplace and unedifying de tails from which no human life is wholly exempt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of William Wordsworth: Compiled From Authentic Sources; With Numerous Quotations From His Poems, Illustrative of His Life and Character William Wordsworth is the father of a new school of Poetry, and his name marks an era in the literature of England, which is full of deep interest to the philosophical inquirer. He began his career with profound convictions respecting the nature and functions of poetry; its dignity as an art, and the immense capabilities it afforded for the utterance of sublime and ennobling truths, and for the furtherance of human liberty and happiness. He saw, too, that the old Harp of the Bards was profaned by the touch of uninspired, and even frivolous hands; and he determined, if possible, to rescue it from their keeping, and restore it once again to its divine uses, and ancient melody.
