Anathoth was one of the thirteen cities that were given to the priests in the time of Joshua. It was situated about three miles north of Jerusalem, within the limits of the tribe of Benjamin. Jeremiah was thus of the sacerdotal or priestly race. His fathers name was Hilkiah. Some have supposed that this was the high-priest who found the book of the law in the temple, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah: but this is not probable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah: A Revised Translation With Introductions and Short Explanations The aim of the present volume is to assist an ordinary educated reader to read the Book of Jeremiah intelligently, and to understand the gist and scope Of its different parts. For this purpose I have given a revised translation Of the Book, in the general style of the Authorized Version, as clear and exact as English idiom would permit; the text has been divided into paragraphs, with headings prefixed to each, summarizing the argu ment or narrative which follows; and a minimum of short notes has been added sometimes illustrating from other passages the terms used, more frequently explaining briefly historical or other allusions, difficult passages (so far as this was possible), technical expressions, and other things not likely to be familiar to any but special students. It is from being unacquainted with things such as these, that the writings of the prophets are, it is to be feared, found by many readers to be frequently. Book excerpt: Ferment is the correct word by which to characterize current Jeremiah studies, a deep and broad stirring that relies on previous scholarship but that seeks to move beyond that scholarship in bold and new ways. This collection of fine essays not only reflects that ferment but in important ways contributes to it and advances the discussion. Most broadly, the current discussion seeks to move beyond the historical-critical categories of Sigmund Mowinckel and Bernhard Duhm and the classic formulation of three sources, A, B, and C. In Jeremiah as in other parts of biblical scholarship, the new questions concern the inadequacy of historical-critical readings of a positivistic kind and the prospect of synchronic readings, either through ideological analysis that seeks to show that ideology shapes the book, or through canonical readings that find a large theological intentionality to the whole of the book. It turns out, perforce, that ideological and canonical readings are closely twinned in their judgment about the literature. This present collection, which includes both new voices and some of the established major players in the discussion, merits important attention." From the preface, by Walter Brueggemann

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah: Together With the Lamentations, With Map Notes and Introduction The General Editor of The Cambridge Bible for Schools thinks it right to say that he does not hold himself responsible either for the interpretation of particular passages which the Editors of the several Books have adopted, or for any opinion on points of doctrine that they may have expressed. In the New Testament more especially questions arise of the deepest theological import, on which the ablest and most conscientious interpreters have differed and always will differ. His aim has been in all such cases to leave each Contributor to the unfettered exercise of his own judgment, only taking care that mere controversy should as far as possible be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophecy of Religion: Studies in the Life of Jeremiah Hen the Council of the Cunningham Lecture ship did me the honour of inviting me to be the Lecturer for 1920, leaving the choice of a subject to myself, I gratefully accepted the appointment, and offered a course on the life and writings of Jeremiah. Had I been younger, I should have preferred, instead of adding another to the many books on Jeremiah which have recently appeared in English, to try and break ground in some less frequented field of Old Testament theology. As it was, my choice was in fluenced by a long-standing interest in the study of Jeremiah's work and personality, as well as a hope that I might still be able to contribute something to an understanding of his message to his own age and to us. The Lectures were delivered, under the same title as the present volume, in New College, Edinburgh, in the spring of 1920, and are now published in accord ance with the terms of the Lectureship. I have to express my regret that publication has been unavoidably delayed beyond the allotted period; and also to explain that in preparing the work for the press I have not only expanded the lectures but arranged the matter under other headings and in a somewhat different order. In general, however, the substance of the six original lectures will be found in Chapters I and II; III and IV; VIII; VI and VII; XI; XV and XVIII. The te maining nine chapters are added in order to present a fuller picture of Jeremiah (though still an incomplete one) than was possible in the lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Jeremiah: With Introduction and Notes The scope of the series in which this Commentary appears does not permit of any large dealing with the Hebrew text of Jeremiah; hence many points of interest to Hebrew scholars have had to be passed by almost unnoticed. For a similar reason the question of J eremiah's use of metre, a highly controversial and technical subject, has received but slight treatment. In the present volume no general review of the origin and development of Hebrew prophecy has been attempted, the subject having already received admirable treatment in the series, and the reader who desires more detailed information on the subject cannot do better than consult Dr Wade's note Hebrew Prophecy and its Credentials in his Commentary on Isaiah, pp. Viii - xvii. In conclusion I wish to express my deep gratitude to the General Editor, Dr Lock. Dr Lock has been most patient and kind in reading through both the MS and proofs of the Com mentary, and to his wise advice and varied learning I have frequently been indebted. Canon R. H. Kennett, the Regius Professor of Hebrew in Cambridge University, very kindly read through the MS of the Introduction and made valuable sugges tions in regard to it for which I am very grateful, as I am for the care and affection which he lavished upon me - as upon his other pupils - during the years that I studied under his guidance.
