Excerpt: ...I was kindly lodged by the Fathers of the Society in their house of the Jesu, where I passed some weeks in a very pleasant manner, and was greatly edified by the goodness and virtues of the Father-General and all his subjects. They were all kindness to me, and I can never forget the gratitude I owe them. The Father-General was so good as to take me himself, for the first time, to St. Peter's; and he made me enter by St. Martha's door, instead of going in at the front entrance, in order that I might receive at once the fullest impression of the sublime grandeur of that wonderful temple. From that spot the effect produced is much more striking. During the following days I continued, sometimes with one and sometimes with another of these learned religious, to make myself acquainted with Eome, visiting its churches, palaces, galleries, ruins, and catacombs. When the Marchesa di Barolo arrived, she hired a house with two stories, besides the ground floor, in the Via della Croce, near the Piazza di Spagna. I took leave of my revered friends, and took up my abode with my benefactress. She had become acquainted with Cardinal Lambruschini in Paris, when he filled the post of Apostolical Nuncio in that city. He had now been placed for some years at the head of affairs in Kome by Pope Gregory XVI., and occupied the office of Secretary of State. The Marchesa called upon him, and explained the object of her journey. The venerable Cardinal received her with particular respect and paternal affection, nor did he ever afterwards omit an opportunity of testifying his regard for her.
