Principal Secretary of State to King Edward the Sixth, and Queen Elizabeth: Wherein Are Discovered Many Singular Matters Relating to the State of Learning, the Reformation of Religion, and the Transactions of the Kingdom, During His Time, in All Which He Had a Great and InfluenceBut it is impossible to recover all. What I have collected together in these papers from various and sundry books, and original writings, are sufficient to give a fair, though not a full account of him. And that which I value my present undertaking for is, that I have done it impartially: for it is not of the nature of a rhetorical panegyric, wherein more care is taken to praise than to speak truth. To which last I have had a very tender regard; being borne out in every thing I have writ by the authority of indubitable monuments; that is, either of Smith's own letters, books, and papers, or of others his friends and contemporaries.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Courtliness in Early Modern Literature by : Jennifer Richards
Download or read book Rhetoric and Courtliness in Early Modern Literature written by Jennifer Richards and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric and Courtliness in Early Modern Literature explores the early modern interest in conversation as a newly identified art. Conversation was widely accepted to have been inspired by the republican philosopher Cicero. Recognizing his influence on courtesy literature - the main source for 'civil conversation' - Jennifer Richards uncovers alternative ways of thinking about humanism as a project of linguistic and social reform. She argues that humanists explored styles of conversation to reform the manner of association between male associates; teachers and students, buyers and sellers, and settlers and colonial others. They reconsidered the meaning of 'honesty' in social interchange in an attempt to represent the tension between self-interest and social duty. Richards explores the interest in civil conversation among mid-Tudor humanists, John Cheke, Thomas Smith and Roger Ascham, as well as their self-styled successors, Gabriel Harvey and Edmund Spenser.
Book Synopsis The Ideological Origins of the British Empire by : David Armitage
Download or read book The Ideological Origins of the British Empire written by David Armitage and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ideological Origins of the British Empire presents a comprehensive history of British conceptions of empire for more than half a century. David Armitage traces the emergence of British imperial identity from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries, using a full range of manuscript and printed sources. By linking the histories of England, Scotland and Ireland with the history of the British Empire, he demonstrates the importance of ideology as an essential linking between the processes of state-formation and empire-building. This book sheds light on major British political thinkers, from Sir Thomas Smith to David Hume, by providing fascinating accounts of the 'British problem' in the early modern period, of the relationship between Protestantism and empire, of theories of property, liberty and political economy in imperial perspective, and of the imperial contribution to the emergence of British 'identities' in the Atlantic world.

Book Synopsis The Elizabethan Conquest of Ireland by : James Charles Roy
Download or read book The Elizabethan Conquest of Ireland written by James Charles Roy and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Elizabeth’s bloody rule over Ireland is examined in this “richly-textured, impressively researched and powerfully involving” history (Roy Foster, author of Modern Ireland, 1600–1972). England’s violent subjugation of Ireland in the sixteenth century under Queen Elizabeth I was one of the most consequential chapters in the long, tumultuous relationship between the two countries. In this engaging and scholarly history, James C. Roy tells the story of revolt, suppression, atrocities, and genocide in the first colonial “failed state”. At the time, Ireland was viewed as a peripheral theater, a haven for Catholic heretics, and a potential “back door” for foreign invasions. Tormented by such fears, lord deputies sent by the queen reacted with an iron hand. These men and their subordinates—including great writers such as Edmund spencer and Walter Raleigh—would gather in salons to pore over the “Irish Question”. But such deliberations were rewarded by no final triumph, only debilitating warfare that stretched across Elizabeth’s long rule.
