It consists of an Autobiography of the first thirty-three years of his life, is written in a clear and beautiful hand, almost without correction or erasure, and entirely free from blot from beginning to end, and is neatly bound in three little volumes by Sir Robert's own hand. We, his sons, were not aware during his lifetime that he was engaged on this work, but from internal evidence it must have been written at intervals between 1870 and 1879, partly from memory, but chiefly from original notes and letters, some of which still exist.
