Book Synopsis Sethy I, King of Egypt by : Aidan Dodson
Download or read book Sethy I, King of Egypt written by Aidan Dodson and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Sethy I (also transcribed as Seti, Sethi and Sethos) ruled for around a decade in the early thirteenth century BC. His lifetime coincided with a crucial point in Egyptian history, following the ill-starred religious revolution of Akhenaten, and heralding the last phase of Egypt’s imperial splendor. As the second scion of a wholly new royal family, his reign did much to set the agenda for the coming decades, both at home and abroad. Sethy was also a great builder, apparently with exquisite artistic taste, to judge from the unique quality of the decoration of his celebrated monuments at Abydos and Thebes. This richly illustrated book tells the story of Sethy's career and monuments, not only in ancient times, but in modern history, and the impact of his legacy on today’s understanding and appreciation of ancient Egypt.

Book Synopsis The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd, 1739-1762 by : Richard Hurd
Download or read book The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd, 1739-1762 written by Richard Hurd and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model edition of the early correspondence of one of George III's favourite bishops. ARCHIVES Richard Hurd is best known to ecclesiastical historians as one of George III's favourite bishops who was offered, and declined, the archbishopric of Canterbury. These letters, therefore, illuminate the early career of one of the most prominent clerics of the late eighteenth century. The letters begin in 1739, just after Hurd had graduated B.A. at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. They chart his gradual climb up the ladder of ecclesiastical preferment, through his time as Fellow at Emmanuel and end with him settled in the comfortable country rectory of Thurcaston in Leicestershire. Hurd had a wide circle of correspondents. He became a close friend of William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester, perhaps the most prominent controverialist of the period. He was also a member of a literary circle which included the poets Thomas Gray and William Mason. Indeed, Hurd himself is well-known to students of English literatureas the author of Letters on Chivalry and Romanceand as a significant figure among the so-called `pre-romantics'. Hurd's letters reveal the full range of his interests, from theology and university politics, through literature, to painting and sculpture. This edition, therefore, not only tells us about Hurd's early life and career, but also provides a valuable insight into the social life of the Anglican clergy in the eighteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life. This is an area about which man has the greatest knowledge. However it is only a pit stop for the human race. What lies before and beyond this little pit stop is open to heavy debate. In fact most people take birth to be the beginning. Death on the other hand is spoken of as being either a full stop for the person or a continuation of life’s journey to somewhere in the unknown. This has given rise to religion. A set of rules was created to explain the unexplainable and this code of morals governed our journey to either a wondrous existence in Heaven or to the fiery confines of Hell. But this book is not dealing with theology. It relates to History – Egyptian History to be more specific – it is the chronicle of events that unfolded during the reign of King Hatshepsut of the Egyptian Empire almost one thousand five hundred years before the birth of Christ. To understand the ancient Egyptians, we must grasp their concepts of earth, heaven and hell. Their life was ruled by their religion.
