Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson The duty of writing this book was finally entrusted to me because during the last two and a half years before my cousin's death I had on his invitation made vama my home and the point of departure for my journeys, and, apart from the members of his own fam ily, I had been throughout that period the only one of his intimate friends in touch with every side of his life. In order to present the book in a single volume it has been necessary to reduce it in bulk, but this oppor tunity has been used solely for the purpose of lighten ing it and rendering it generally more readable. Part of the matter omitted, such as the Vailima Prayers, has now been published elsewhere: the chief part of the re mainder related either to Samoan politics or contained details concerning some of Stevenson's minor works, which were of interest only to the special student who can still find what he needs in the unabridged edition. Some quotations haye been abridge'dand a few trivial paragraphs omittéd'w The framework has been slightly cut down: the general dfieéé of; The picture has, so far as I could manage, remained: tm'aitered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 1 of 2 Many persons, both friends and strangers to me, have rendered my task far easier than l could have hoped. There is hardly one of Stevenson's intimate friends but has helped me in a greater or less degree, and if l were here to repeat my thanks to all to whom l am indebted for information, i should have to record more than sixty names. Those to whom we owe most are otten those whom formally we thank the least; and to Mrs. Steven son and Mr. Lloyd Osbourne 1 can never express my indebtedness for their suggestions and their knowledge, their confidence, their patience, and their encourage ment. But, of course, for everything that is here printed l alone am responsible. The references to Stevenson's writings are necessarily to the pages of the Edinburgh Edition, as being the most complete English collection of his works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson in the Pacific The writer entertains the hope that the following pages may add interest to a subject that lies near the hearts of the many readers in England and the United States who justly hold Stevenson and his works in high esteem. The volume contains only the cursory record and brief comment implied by the title-page; the primary object being to preserve certain floating facts, episodes, sketches, and anecdotes of the novelist, with as many of his views and Opinions as could be collected in a desultory way, during his residence in the Pacific. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 2 of 2: With Portraits The book, however, although it was in Stevenson's mind for several years and was advertised as in prepa ration, was never written, or, so far as I know, even begun. Not the least interesting part of the whole story is the picture of Stevenson sitting down to ad dress a letter of inquiries to Mr. Gladstone, for whose political career he had always the most complete aversion, and finding himself, somewhat to his dis may, overcome with an involuntary reverence for the statesman who embodied so much of England's past. Casting about for a new story, he turned in February to the highroad, that to him and to his father before him had for long been one of the richest fields of ro mance. When, to his delight, he had first found his powers of narrative in Treasure Island, and discovered what possibilities lay before him of writing for boys the kind of stories he liked himself, he announced with glee to Mr. Henley that his next book was to be Jerry Abershaw: A Tale of Putney Heath. 1 He was also to write The Squaw Men: or, The Wild West, and of this one chapter was actually drafted. The new ven ture was, however, called The Great North Road, but, like St. Ives in later days, it rapidly increased in proportions and in difficulty of management. So at the end of the eighth chapter it was relinquished for Kid napped and apparently dropped out of sight. Already in its beginnings it showed an increase of skill in dealing with Nance Holdaway, who foreshadowed other heroines yet to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Robert Louis Stevenson No apology is needed for another book concerning Robert Louis Stevenson. It would be impossible to have too much of him; and while his faith has been touched upon in passing by most of those who have written about him, it has never yet been selected for special and detailed study. But a large, and for the most part a very excellent, literature has for the past nine years been gathering round his personality and his work, so that the difficulty grows ever greater for a new writer. How much may be taken for granted? How much must be explained? It may be expected that some will read this book who are intimately acquainted with the subject, and others to whom it is almost wholly unknown. It is an arduous task that lies before him who would offer anything of even the slightest value to both these classes. Yet I venture to hope that what I have written may tempt some to enter one of the richest and most delightful regions in modern English literature, and may interest others to whom that region is already familiar. I have to thank Mr. Graham Balfour for his generous and cordial permission to make use of his Biography - a permission of which I have availed myself with obvious freedom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson in California His stay turned into exile, for he found that only in the South Seas could he live; and sad days and longing for familiar friends and faces succeeded, especially in the last years of his life; but he never again even ventured so far as San Fran cisco. The mere extent of a man's travel has in it something consolatory. That he should have left friends and enemies in many different and distant quarters gives a sort of earthly dignity to his existence; and I think the better of myself for the belief that I have left. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of the Works of Robert Louis Stevenson Stevenson possessed a singularly healthy mind and a tem perament which enabled him to face the ills of life with unflinching courage. Constant ill-health, the frequent apprehension of poverty, and a series of discouragements which far exceeded the ordinary allowance of humanity, were met, at one time with the humorous acquiescence of a Thomas More, at another with a deeper fortitude which threw an answering glove into the face of Destiny. Courage with him was the virtue which all the others presuppose, and it requires little reflection to perceive that superiority to weakness or vice cannot exist without it. It is this quality which runs like a golden thread through his life' and work, and which is the secret of his charm. No writer has ever thrown more of himself into his works; no one has illumined his surroundings more vividly with the rays of his individuality; and it would be possible to arrange his essays in an order which would portray his inward and outward life from childhood to middle age.
