Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Fulton: His Life and Its Results Robert Fulton has often, if not generally, been assumed to have been the inventor of the steamboat, as Watt is generally supposed to be the inventor of the steam-engine, which constitutes its motive apparatus. But this notion is quite incorrect. The invention of the steam-engine and that of the steam-boat alike are the results of the inventive genius, not of any one man or of any dozen men, but have been the outcome of the inventive powers of the human race, exerted at intervals throughout the whole period of recorded history. An invention is usually, or is at least assumed to be, the product of the genius of some great mechanic, acting, as did the genii of old, by a single effort of the mysterious power. In this sense of the word, the steam-engine was never invented; rather it is the culmination of a long series of inventions of detail, and of improvements upon the earliest crude conceptions, and is the product of growth in a definite direction, and toward a now well-defined end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Fulton, an Historical Novel The idea which is the basis of this work, is mainly the same as that of my drama. The Youth of Tycho Brahe, which is to be considered an offspring of this production - this being, as well in its plan as in its execution, older than that. Nevertheless, I believe. That the difference between these two works is so great, that they have nothing in common but the principal features of the leading idea. But.this is just the peculiarity of an idea that it comprehends in itself an infinitude to be unfolded in different shapes, like the type which constitutes the basis of diverse natural processes. Any idea, for instance that of liberty, love, etc. Can, there fore, be represented in very different artistical productions. This can also be done in representing the struggles, which a mind and genius of peculiar structure encounters in paving for itself a new career, which is the case in this work, and I believe, I may even add, that the narrative form is here more suitable than the dramatic, as being in closer corres pondence with the development of the mental process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Fulton Engineer and Artist, His Life and Works Some excuse ought perhaps to be offered for adding to the number of the biographies of Robert Fulton; I can only plead that, so far as I have observed, not one of them is altogether fair and impartial. Fulton's American biographers have credited him with greater achievements than the facts warrant, while English writers too often have dismissed him contemptuously as a charlatan, a filcher of other men's brains, or even as a traitor. In order to judge between these conflicting views, I have endeavoured by research and by the collation of recently published materials, to get at the really important facts about Fulton and his inventions - facts which the lapse of time has helped to bring into their true perspective - and present them with sympathy, but without bias and without petty national feeling. Indeed the latter should never have existed, for Fulton was, if anything, cosmopolitan; born a British subject in a British colony, the seed-time of his life was spent in England, the fruition took place in France, and the harvest was reaped in his native America. That harvest was the introduction of navigation by steam on a commercial basis in the Western hemisphere. In the present year, when we are celebrating the centenary of its introduction into Europe, it may not be unprofitable to trace the steps which led to these far-reaching results.
