Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Reginald Heber, D.D., Lord Bishop of Calcutta, Vol. 1 of 2: With Selections From His Correspondence, Unpublished Poems, and Private Papers Reginald, the lamented subject of this memoir, was born April lt, 1783, at M'alpas, in the county of Chester, of which his father was for many years co-rector. His early childhood was distinguished by mildness ofdisposi'tion, obedience to his pa rents, consideration for the feelings of those around him, and by that trust in God's providence which formed, through life, so prominent a part of his character. When little more than two years old, he was dangerously ill with the whooping-cough, for which he was ordered to be blooded: his mother took him on her knees, saying, Dr. Currie wishes you to lose a little blood; I hope you will not object his answer was, I will do whatever you please, mamma. On the nurse screaming out that they were going to murder her child, Poor Reginald said, let her go down stairs. The apothecary then took hold of his arm, on which he exclaimed, Do not hold me when as sured that if he moved, he would be much more hurt, I won't stir, he replied, and steadily held out his arm, looking the whole time at the operation. Book excerpt: The "Quarterly Review" presents a rare opportunity to Romantic scholars to test the truth of Marilyn Butler's claim that the early nineteenth-century periodical is the matrix for democratization of public writing and reading. This is the second title in this series to look at its influence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Reginald Heber, D.D: Bishop of Calcutta In the course of a few years after the decease of the inestimable prelate, Bishop Heber, his widow prepared and published a memoir of his life, which was first printed in England, and afterwards in New York, in two octavo volumes. These volumes contained a great amount of matter which the general reader would not expect to find in a work of biography, furnished chiefly from the European travels of the subject of the memoir before he entered upon the Christian ministry, and from the efforts of his pen on historical topics. In the department of the memoir itself, also, numerous portions found their place which, from their local character, ceased to be interesting in this country and at this distance of time; whilst the size and price of Mrs. Heber's work rendered it beyond the reach of the great mass of readers who might desire to make themselves acquainted with the life and labors of one of the brightest geniuses of modern times. In this country Bishop Heber is not known as his character, piety, and talents deserve, or as his zeal, efforts, and example in the holy cause of religion demand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1782, Princess Ekaterina Dashkova was appointed dir. of Russia's Imperial Acad. of Arts & Sci. by Catherine the Great. It was just two years after she had met with another personality of the Enlightenment -- Benjamin Franklin, founding pres. of Amer. first scientific acad., the Amer. Philosophical Soc. (APS). The essays in this vol., pub. as a companion to an exhib. of the same title & on the occasion of the Franklin Tercentenary of 2006, highlight Dashkova as an accomplished Enlightenment woman. They explore how she, like Franklin, took up the challenge of living according to the newest ideals of her age. Nominated by Franklin in 1789 to become the first female member of the APS, she in turn made him the first Amer. member of the Russian Acad.

Book excerpt: This volume explores how India as a geographical space was constructed by the British colonial regime in visual and material terms. It demonstrates the instrumentalisation of cultural artefacts such as landscape paintings, travel literature and cartography, as spatial practices overtly carrying scientific truth claims, to materially produce artificial spaces that reinforced power relations. It sheds light on the primary dominance of cartographic reason in the age of European Enlightenment which framed aesthetic and scientific modes of representation and imagination. The author cross-examines this imperial gaze as a visual perspective which bore the material inscriptions of a will to assert, possess and control. The distinguishing theme in this study is the production of India as a new geography sourced from Britain's own interaction with its rural outskirts and domination in its fringes. This book: Addresses the concept of "production of space" to study the formulation of a colonial geography which resulted in the birth of a new place, later a nation; Investigates a generative period in the formation of British India c. 1750–1850 as a colonial territory vis-à-vis its representation and reiteration in British maps, landscape paintings and travel writings; Brings Great Britain and British India together on one plane not only in terms of the physical geo-spaces but also in the excavation of critical domains by alluding to critics from both spaces; Seeks to understand the pictorial grammar that legitimised the expansive British imperial cartographic gaze as the dominant narrative which marginalised all other existing local ideas of space and inhabitation. Rethinking colonial constructions of modern India, this volume will be of immense interest to scholars and researchers of modern history, cultural geography, colonial studies, English literature, cultural studies, art, visual studies and area studies.
