Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 2 A covenant means a bargain, or agreement made between two or more persons. One of these persons promises to do certain things, provided that the other will do certain other things. For example, we read in Genesis, twenty-ninth chapter, about Jacob going to live for awhile with his uncle, Laban, in Padanaram, where Abraham had formerly lived. Laban and Jacob made an agreement or covenant with each other. Jacob wished to marry Rachel, one of Laban's daughters. Laban said, you shall have my daughter on these conditions: if you will serve me for seven years, as a shepherd, taking care of my flocks of sheep, then, as soon as the seven years are ended, you shall marry Rachel, and have her for your wife. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life, Vol. 2 of 2 Minna had been lucky enough to find quarters near Zurich which corresponded very closely with the wishes I had so emphatically expressed before leaving. The house was situated in the parish of Enge, a good fifteen minutes' walk from the town, on a site overlooking the lake, and was an old-fashioned hostelry called 'Zum Abendstern' belonging to a certain Frau Hirel, who was a pleasant old lady. The second floor, which was quite self-contained and very quiet, offered us humble but adequate accommodations for a modest rent. I arrived early in the morning and found Minna still in bed. She was anxious to know whether I had returned simply out of pity; but I quickly succeeded in obtaining her promise that she would never again refer to what had taken place. She was soon quite herself again when she began to show me the progress she had made in arranging the rooms. Our position had for some years been growing more comfortable, in spite of the fact that at this time various difficulties again arose, and our domestic happiness seemed tolerably secure. Yet I could never quite master a restless inclination to deviate from anything that was regarded as conventional. Our two pets, Peps and Papo, largely helped to make our lodgings homelike; both were very fond of me, and were sometimes even too obtrusive in showing their affection. Peps would always lie behind me in the armchair while I was working, and Papo, after repeatedly calling out 'Richard' in vain, would often come fluttering into my study if I stayed away from the sitting-room too long. He would then settle down on my desk and vigorously shuffle about the papers and pens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Novel or Varieties in English Life, Vol. 2 But the next morning, when he heard his neighbour astir, he knocked gently at her door: there was no answer. He entered softly, and saw her seated very listlessly in the centre of the room as if it had no familiar nook or corner as the rooms of home have her hands drooping on her lap, and her eyes gazing desolately on the floor. Then he approached and spoke to her. Helen was very subdued, and very silent. Her tears seemed dried up; and it was long before she gave sign or token that she heeded him. At length, however, he gradually succeeded in rousing her interest and the first symptom of his success was in the quiver of her lip, and the overflow of her downcast eyes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth and Fiction Relating to My Life, Vol. 2 of 2 The dignity of the subject elevated in the poet the feeling of his own personality. That he himself would enter hereafter into those choirs, that the god-man would distinguish him, nay, give him face to face the reward for his labours, which even here every feeling, pious heart had fondly paid in many a pure tear, - these were such innocent, childlike thoughts and hopes, as only a well-constituted mind can conceive and cherish. Thus Klopstock gained the perfect right to regard himself as a consecrated person, and thus in his actions he studied the most scrupulous purity. Even in his old age it troubled him exceedingly that he had given his earliest love to a lady who, by marry ing another, left him in uncertainty whether she had really loved or been worthy of him. The sentiments which bound him to Meta; their hearty, tranquil affec tion; their short, sacred married life; the aversion of the surviving husband from a second union, all is of that kind which may well be remembered hereafter in the circle of the blessed.
