Book excerpt: The biography "The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte," written by American historian William Milligan Sloane, charts the French emperor's life from his appointment as First Consul in 1799 through his exile to Saint Helena in 1815. Sloane talks about Napoleon's military and political tactics, including his victories in Italy and Egypt, his defeats in Russia, and his eventual failure at the Battle of Waterloo. The book dives deeply into Napoleon's private life, highlighting his connections to his wives Josephine and Marie as well as his son Joseph. Napoleon is presented by Sloane in a balanced manner, with both his advantages and disadvantages being highlighted. He also examines Napoleon's legacy, particularly how the Napoleonic Code and European politics and culture were influenced by him. In general, "The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte" is a thorough biography that offers an in-depth analysis of one of the most important characters in modern history.

(of IV.) by William Milligan Sloane The fine charter with which France had presumably closed the revolutionary epoch, in order to live for the first time under a constitutional government, was about to display its fatal weakness in the production of a deadlock. This possibility had been clearly foreseen by acute observers, since there was no provision for the control of one arm of the government by the other, and in any working system supreme control must reside somewhere. For fear of usurpation, anarchy, and tyranny the constitution of the Directorate divided the powers so completely that they could not work at all. The spring elections of 1797 were the first held under this new constitution without any restrictions, and the Jacobin majority in the legislature disappeared. Barthelemy, the new director chosen to replace Letourneur, was a moderate democrat with royalistic leanings, who, like his predecessor, joined his fortunes with those of Carnot. The Five Hundred, therefore, as well as the Ancients, now represented the great majority of the French people, who hated Jacobinism, who were opposed to any republican propaganda in foreign countries, and who, more than anything else, wanted peace, in order to restore their fortunes and to secure leisure for their amusements. An attack on the executive policy which had been dictated by the three radical members of the Directory, sometimes designated the triumvirate, at once began. Nothing escaped: assaults were made on their attitude toward the emigrants and the clergy, on their loss of the colonies, on their financial failures, and, above all, on their conduct of foreign affairs, which appeared to have as its aim the continuance of the war, and the overthrow of monarchy throughout Europe. The leaders of the majority in the two councils frequented a club in the Clichy quarter of Paris, which was the center of royalist intrigue. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Scott presents a dispassionate, unpartisan view of Napoleon, paying tribute to his military genius and administrative skill and underlining his legacy to France in the form of a national system of education, greatly improved communications, and the Code Napoleon. Refusing to paint him as the bloodthirsty despot presented by many a fellow Tory, Scott notes his mild and humane temperament and genuine love of his country. The seeds of his downfall lie in his progressive self-identification with the French people and in his vision of himself as the man on whom the nation's destiny rested. His life ultimately becomes a tale of hubris, where overweaning ambition and self-blinding egotism lead to defeat in the Russian snows."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Napoleon is etched still across the history of Europe, in the wars he waged, the dynasties that he toppled, and the laws he enacted. Even in an epoch rich in social change, from the bottom up he remains a fascinating figure; biographers face the challenge of doing justice to such a multi-faceted character. Few can have been said to have access to the Emperor as much as the generals that served under him throughout his many campaigns; General Jomini spent many year serving the Emperor and many more in the company of some of his enemies putting him in an excellent position to write his biography. Written as if by Napoleon himself, Jomini traces Napoleon’s political and military successes and failures, weaving them into a seamless narrative that makes his work one of the few rounded biographies of Napoleon. This second volume covers the campaigns of Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau and Friedland and the beginnings of the Peninsular War. Of the Author — General Jomini saw much service during the Napoleonic Wars, initially working in staff positions for Marshal Ney prior to being attached to the Emperor’s own headquarters during the 1806 and 1807 campaigns. He was pushed out of the Grande Armée into the arms of the Russian service in 1813, becoming aide-de-camp to the Tzar. He was famous for his copious output of works on the military theory and strategy employed during the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and even those of Frederick the Great. He is often remembered for his chef d’œuvre, the “Art of War”, and has been dubbed the “founder of modern strategy” by historian John Shy. Author — General Baron Antoine Henri de Jomini (1779-1869) Translator — General H. W. Halleck (1815-1872)
