Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lord Clive, Vol. 2 On June 29 Clive, escorted by only a party of 200 Europeans and 300 sepoys, 1 entered Murshidabad, which he described in after years as extensive, populous and rich as the city of London, with this difference, that there are individuals in the first, possessing infinitely greater property than any in the last city. Through the narrow, winding streets of the capital, radiant with living masses of colour, Clive, escorted by his troop, made his Way to a palace and a garden spacious enough to accommodate all the troop which accompanied him. Upon the Colonel's arrival, Jaggutseat,2 and several of the great men, anxious for their fate, sent their submission, With Offers of large presents, which the Colonel refused, assuring them he desired nothing but their assistance in settling the government. The Hindu millionaires, as Well as other men Of property, Clive told the House of Commons, made me the greatest offers (which, nevertheless, are usual upon such occasions, and what they expected would have been required), and had I accepted these Offers, I might have been in possession of millions, which the present Court of Directors could not have dispossessed me of but pre ferring the reputation Of the English nation, the interest of the Nabob, and the advantage of the Company, to all pecuniary considerations, I refused all offers that were made me, not only then, but to the last hour of my continuance in the Com pany's service in Bengal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Robert, Lord Clive, Vol. 1 of 3: Collected From the Family Papers Communicated by the Earl of Powis; With a Portrait and Map The present work was commenced in consequence of the possession of a body of unpublished documents, which, having been preserved among the family records at Walcot, were thrown open to the author by the friendship of the Earl of Powis. These consisted chiefly of the whole correspondence of Lord Clive, containing the originals of nearly every letter which he had received from the time when he first filled a public situation in India, down to the period at which he finally quitted that country; with copies of answers to many of the most important of them. They contained also several memoirs regarding the chief enterprises in which he was engaged, and minutes of council on the leading measures of his government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Robert, Lord Clive, Vol. 3 of 3: Collected From the Family Papers, Communicated by the Earl of Powis Difficult as was the situation in which Lord Clive was placed when he adopted those active measures to remedy the abuses in the civil ad ministration of Bengal, which have been already described, a much more arduous task awaited him; that of carrying into execution the posi tive orders he had received from the Directors, to reduce the allowances of the officers of the army of that presidency. This excited a spirit of mutinous defection from their duty in that body, which it required all the energy and deci sion of Clive to subdue. The subject has im portance in various ways, and in none more than as it is so singularly illustrative of his character. The consequence was that the ryot tried to cheat the zamindctr by keep ing back part of his harvest, and the zamindar the revenue collector. The N awab retained part of the revenue of his district, and the Subadar and his Diwan were frequently in collusion, to defraud the Imperial Treasury. Few men could resist the temptation to appropriate some Of. The money that passed through their hands. Good fortune attended him in another way, for Clive and Lawrence had been forced by ill health to return to Madras, and the command of the English forces was left in the hands of De Gingen. That officer, under instructions from the Governor of Madras, sent a detachment to seize the fortress of Gingi. The attempt was a failure owing to the prompti tude with which Dupleix had thrown in reinforce ments, and the success of the French had the usual effect upon the native powers. Both the Marathas and the Maisur troops offered active cooperation on condition of being allowed to prosecute their own design against Trichinopoli. Encouraging them in this undertaking, Dupleix felt himself strong enough to assume the offensive against the English, and sent a force to blockade Fort St. David. A disaster resulted. For Lawrence, roused from his sick bed at Madras, encountered De Kerjean about two miles from Fort St. David, and, in an action in which the European forces on both sides fought with splendid courage, thoroughly routed him. Closely following upon this misfortune came the news that De la Touche, from whose arrival Dupleix hoped so much, had perished at sea with 700 soldiers. This was a terrible blow. But Dupleix would not give in. With his Maratha and Maisur allies he planned an investment of Tri chinopoli, and kept Lawrence well occupied in his endeavour to relieve the beleaguered place. In vain did Lawrence attempt to force an engagement. As soon as he approached, the allies withdrew within their intrenchments. Reinforced by 200 men from Madras, Lawrence determined upon an assault.
