Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jefferson Davis In offering this volume to the public, the occasion is embraced to avow, with unfeigned candor, a painful sense of the inadequate manner in which the design has been executed. Emboldened rather by his own earnest convictions, than by confidence in his capacity, the author has undertaken to contribute to American History, an extended narration of the more prominent incidents in the life of Jefferson Davis. Whatever may be the decision of the reader upon the merits of the performance, the author has the satisfaction arising from a conscientious endeavor to subserve the ends of truth. In pursuit of the purpose to write facts only, to the aid of familiar acquaintance with many of the topics discussed, and to information derived from the most accurate sources, has been brought laborious investigation of numerous interesting papers, which his avocation made accessible. It is therefore claimed that no statement is to be found in this volume, which is not generally conceded to be true, or which is not a conclusion amply justified by indisputable evidence. Nor is it to be fairly alleged that the work exhibits undue sectional bias. As a Southern man, who, in common with his countrymen of the South, was taught to believe the principles underlying the movement for Southern independence, the only possible basis of Republicanism, the author has regarded, as a worthy incentive, the desire to vindicate, as best he might, the motives and conduct of the South and its late leader. laiming the purpose of promoting sectional bitterness, or of a wholesale indictment of the Northern people, he deems it needless to dwell upon the obvious propriety of discrimination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Great Southerners: Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee The primary aim of this book is to acquaint the children of the South with the goodness and grandeur of the lives of two of her noblest sons. The suggestion for the work came from a report of the Library Committee of the School Officials of Georgia, who urged that some one write the life of Jefferson Davis for use in the Southern schools. Not only was Davis a leading figure in the Southern Confederacy, but he played an important part in his time in our national life. He was a man of high ideals and lofty ambitions. Of the goodness and purity of General Lee there can be no question. It seems, therefore, especially fitting that the stories of the President of the Confederacy and of his Commander in Chief should be given together. All points of controversy and sectional feeling have been avoided. It is a time when the whole nation is laying aside discussion of such topics, a time when North and South are each realizing and acknowledging that in the Great Trial each was faithful to duty. The author's thanks are due to Professor Carl W. Steed of Mercer University and to Dr. W. F. Melton of Emory College for valuable criticisms and corrections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Jefferson Davis With a Secret History of the Southern Confederacy, Gathered Behind the Scenes in Richmond Jefferson Davis should have a truthful and acute biographer, one who would do something more than echo the shallow clamors and interested opinions of the day. Whatever the estimate of his person, he performed a great part in history; and his character, mixed, angular, abounding in surprises, full of caprices and apparent inconsistencies, is precisely that which affords the most interesting and vivid subjects for biography. The writer is conscious of attempting a high and difficult task - an extraordinary work. He comes to it not only with ample literary preparation, but with an unusual animation. He has been accused of personal hostility to Mr. Davis; and is to-day, perhaps, in all his literary capacities, most widely known to the country as censor of the Confederate Chief. He repels the accusation of any prejudice, in the very front of his work; he is able and willing to do exact justice to Mr. Davis; and if he ever attacked him it was through supreme devotion to a great cause, and from a just resentment toward the man who mis guided and wrecked it. The War Between the States, with its sacrifices, has ceased, and peace between the sections with its ennobling, refining and uplifting influences, has come to abide forever. They who would stay its marches and delay its reign are the enemies of the Nation's happiness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
