Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Henry, Third Earl of Southampton: Shakespeare's Patron From a plain statement of facts, however, we may sometimes secure legitimate inferences. Hence I dwelt, some may think unduly, on his work in the Virginia Company. We find him there, always in the van, among all his anxieties. A troublesome minority made so much noise that the king crushed it because of the disagreement among themselves, but Southampton could have pulled it through had he been let alone. And from what we know of his actions there, we may argue back to the other brawls with which he has been credited, feeling sure he would always be on the side which he thought was right. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents original material which indicates that Aemilia Lanyer – female writer, feminist, and Shakespeare contemporary – is Shakespeare’s hidden and arguably most significant co-author. Once dismissed as the mere paramour of Shakespeare’s patron, Lord Hunsdon, she is demonstrated to be a most articulate forerunner of #MeToo fury. Building on previous research into the authorship of Shakespeare’s works, Bradbeer offers evidence in the form of three case studies which signal Aemilia’s collaboration with Shakespeare. The first case study matches the works of "George Wilkins" – who is currently credited as the co-author of the feminist Shakespeare play Pericles (1608) – with Aemilia Lanyer’s writing style, education, feminism and knowledge of Lord Hunsdon’s secret sexual life. The second case-study recognizes Titus Andronicus (1594), a play containing the characters Aemilius and Bassianus, to be a revision of the suppressed play Titus and Vespasian (1592), as authored by the unmarried pregnant Aemilia Bassano, as she then was. Lastly, it is argued that Shakespeare’s clowns, Bottom, Launce, Malvolio, Dromio, Dogberry, Jaques, and Moth, arise in her deeply personal war with the misogynist Thomas Nashe. Each case study reveals new aspects of Lanyer’s feminist activism and involvement in Shakespeare’s work, and allows for a deeper analysis and appreciation of the plays. This research will prove provocative to students and scholars of Shakespeare studies, English literature, literary history, and gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamlet’s Age and the Earl of Southampton investigates the exact age of the eponymous prince in Shakespeare’s play, a topic which has been subject to frequent debates over the past 239 years. Whether Hamlet is sixteen, eighteen or, as the Gravedigger states in Act V, thirty years old may seem irrelevant to performances of the play (since actors tackling the part are very rarely in their teens), but it still tends to influence our general view of the Danish prince. Romantic criticism in the early 19th century insisted on a heroic and supremely intelligent teenage prince, and, to a large extent, this view of Hamlet still prevails. Whether Shakespeare meant his protagonist to be the irreproachable prince of Romantic fancy, however, remains a question. Numerous scholars have found references to the Earl of Essex in Hamlet, but Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton, once indisputably Shakespeare’s patron, is a far more likely candidate. If Shakespeare had Southampton in mind when writing his Danish tragedy, this would account for the Gravedigger’s estimate of Hamlet’s age in Act V and explain several things that have puzzled us over the last four centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting striking new evidence, this book shows that “William Shakespeare” was the pen name of William Stanley, son of the Earl of Derby. Born in 1561, he was educated at Oxford, travelled for three years abroad, and studied law in London, mixing with poets and playwrights. In 1592 Spenser recorded that Stanley had written several plays. In 1594 he unexpectedly inherited the earldom—hence the pen name. He became a Knight of the Garter in 1601, eligible to help bear the canopy over King James at his coronation, likely prompting Sonnet 125’s “Wer’t ought to me I bore the canopy?”—he is the only authorship candidate ever in a position to “bear the canopy” (which was only ever borne over royalty). Love’s Labour’s Lost parodies an obscure poem by Stanley’s tutor, which few others would have read. Hamlet’s situation closely mirrors Stanley’s in 1602. His name is concealed in the list of actors’ names in the First Folio. His writing habits match Shakespeare’s as deduced from the early printed plays. He was a patron of players who performed several times at court, and financed the troupe known as Paul’s Boys. No other member of the upper class was so thoroughly immersed in the theatrical world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern biographies of William Shakespeare abound; however, close scrutiny of the surviving records clearly show that there is insufficient material for a cradle to grave account of his life, that most of what is written about him cannot be verified from primary sources, and that Shakespearean biography did not attain scholarly or academic respectability until long after Samuel Schoenbaum published William Shakespeare A Documentary Life in 1975. This study begins with a short survey of the history and practice of biography and then surveys the very limited biographical material for Shakespeare. Although Shakespeare gradually attained the status as a national hero during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there were no serious attempts to reconstruct his life. Any attempt at an account of his life or personality amounts, however, merely to "biografiction". Modern biographers differ sharply on Shakespeare’s apparent relationships with Southampton and with Jonson, which merely underlines the fact that the documentary record has to be greatly expanded through contextual description and speculation in order to appear like a Life of Shakespeare.

Book excerpt: 2004 is the quatercentenary of the death of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. This collection of 39 essays is published in celebration of his life and achievements.Oxford, a key figure of the English Renaissance, at the heart of Elizabethan court and cultural events, has a substantial claim to authorship of the works of 'Shakespeare'. There is an increasingly recognised problem in relating the life of the man from Stratford to the knowledge and cast of mind displayed in the works which now bear his name. This book is a benchmark for future disucssion and research in the Authorship debate.
