In his investigations, he regularly draws upon an in-depth story already written: The Life of George Chaffey by J.A. Alexander in 1928. His own history includes not only developments in the Australian towns of Mildura (Victoria) and Renmark (South Australia), but also catalogues Ceorge's earlier time growing up in Brockville, Ontario (Canada), followed by his inventive years in the USA during the early 1880s, and again in the early 1900s. In this book, the author initially gives countless examples of young George Chaffey's inquisitive, engineering mind in his birth country, Canada, after which he describes George and his brother William Benjamin's inventiveness in the USA. Ship building, irrrigation and electricity were to fascinate this curious inventor from an early age.

Book excerpt: Tracing the history of intercultural struggle and cooperation in the citrus belt of Greater Los Angeles, Matt Garcia explores the social and cultural forces that helped make the city the expansive and diverse metropolis that it is today. As the citrus-growing regions of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys in eastern Los Angeles County expanded during the early twentieth century, the agricultural industry there developed along segregated lines, primarily between white landowners and Mexican and Asian laborers. Initially, these communities were sharply divided. But Los Angeles, unlike other agricultural regions, saw important opportunities for intercultural exchange develop around the arts and within multiethnic community groups. Whether fostered in such informal settings as dance halls and theaters or in such formal organizations as the Intercultural Council of Claremont or the Southern California Unity Leagues, these interethnic encounters formed the basis for political cooperation to address labor discrimination and solve problems of residential and educational segregation. Though intercultural collaborations were not always successful, Garcia argues that they constitute an important chapter not only in Southern California's social and cultural development but also in the larger history of American race relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and Control in the Imperial Valley examines the evolution of irrigated farming in the Imperial-Mexicali Valley, an arid desert straddling the California–Baja California border. Bisected by the international boundary line, the valley drew American investors determined to harness the nearby Colorado River to irrigate a million acres on both sides of the border. The “conquest” of the environment was a central theme in the history of the valley. Colonization in the valley began with the construction of a sixty-mile aqueduct from the Colorado River in California through Mexico. Initially, Mexico held authority over water delivery until settlers persuaded Congress to construct the All-American Canal. Control over land and water formed the basis of commercial agriculture and in turn enabled growers to use the state to procure inexpensive, plentiful immigrant workers.
