Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Charles Stewart Parnell, Vol. 1 of 2: 1846 1891 The founder of the Parnell family was Thomas Parnell, 'mercer or draper, ' who became Mayor of Congleton, Cheshire, in the reign of James I. He had four sons - William, Thomas, Richard, and Tobias. Of William and Thomas little is known, but Richard seems to have been the most remarkable of the brothers. He was a staunch Cromwellian, the friend of Bradshaw, and thrice mayor of the town. Tobias was a gilder and decorative painter, and also stood high in the esteem of his fellow-citizens. He passed away with the Commonwealth. At the Restoration, his son Thomas, quitting the old home, purchased an estate in Ireland, and took up his abode there. This Thomas Parnell - the first of the Irish Parnells - was the ancestor of an illustrious offspring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
