As in carrying out that task I have tried as far as possible to keep the story of Lamb's life in his own and his sister's words and in those of their con temporaries, my part will be found to be less that of author than of stage-manager. Thanks to the good sense of the Lambs' friends in preserving their letters, and to Lamb's own inveterate habit of autobiography the more my character comes to be known, he wrote, the less will my veracity come to be suspected the task has not been a very difficult one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Charles Lamb Since those days, what may be called the Lamb litera ture, in the shape of criticisms, collections, lives, &c., has increased to large proportions. So diligent has been the exertion of explorers, that some pieces, thought to have disappeared, or to be apocryphal, have been recovered. Much ingenuity and labour have been expended in this interesting pursuit; one long lost copy of the Poetry for Children was actually unearthed in some distant colony to great rejoicing. A few lines, quoted by Elia at the end of one of his essays, described a boy snatching a fearful joy from reading at a stall. This he quoted as the work of a poet of the day, but a critic sagaciously suggested that it was one of his favourite artful devices for veiling the authorship. It was in fact his sister's composition. Scattered little poems were found in a collection issued by the schoolmaster Mylius, and the indefatigable Mr Richard Herne Shepherd, who has written a useful bibliography of Lamb, contrived to bring together these fragments. The poetry for children, thus recovered, was reprinted for the curious amateur. During these latter years, however, yet another, and even, I think, a third copy, has turned up, which has been sold at auction for an enormous price. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Letters, and Writings of Charles Lamb, Vol. 5 Lear, King Of Britain, had three daughters: Goneril, wife to the Duke of Albany; Regan, wife to the Duke Of Cornwall; and Cordelia, a young maid, for whose love the King of France and Duke of Burgundy were joint suitors, and were at this time making stay for that purpose in the court of Lear. The old king, worn out with age and the fatigues of government, he being more than fourscore years Old, determined to take no further part in State affairs, but to leave the management to younger strengths, that he might have time to prepare for death, which must at no long period ensue. With this Intent he called his three daughters to him, to know from their own lips which of them loved him best, that he might part his kingdom among them in such proportions as their affection for him should seem to deserve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles Lamb: His Homes and Haunts IN preparing this simple story of the life and work of Charles Lamb, I have relied upon the best of the biographies and criticisms that have been issued since his death, and have not hesitated to refer to Opinions, recollections, and records published during his life. Among the authors consulted are Edward Moxon, who married Elia's adopted daughter, Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd, Percy Fitzgerald, Canon Ainger, the Right Hon. Augustine Birrell, R. D. Gillman, and E. V. Lucas. I have paid several visits to Elia's country: to Buntingford, where he held his first and only freehold; to Widford, where Mrs. Field is buried; to Blakesware and Edmonton. For some years I lived on the top floor of Mitre Court Buildings, from which Lamb could see the white sails glide by the bottom of the King's Bench Walks, and in Harcourt Buildings by the side of Crown Office Row in the Temple, where he was born. I have often tried to follow his road to the East India House, to Dalston, Islington, Enfield, Edmonton, and the other haunts he loved or favoured. If this brief and simple record of one of the most lovable of men and writers can add a few names to the ever lengthening list of his admirers, a very real debt will have been partly paid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Letters and Writings of Charles Lamb, Vol. 3 of 6: Edited, With Notes and Illustrations Your lines are not to be understood reading on one leg. They are sinuous, and to be won with wrestling. I do assure you in sincerity that no thing you have done has given me greater satis faction. Your Obscurity, where you are dark, which is seldom, is that of too much meaning, not the painful Obscurity which no toil of the reader can dissipate; not the dead vacuum and oundering place in which imagination finds no footing: it is not the dimness of positive darkness, but of distance; and he that reads and not discerns must get a better pair of spectacles. I admire every piece in the collection. I cannot say the first is best: when I do so, the last read rises up in judgment. To your Mother, to your Sister, to Mary dead, they are all weighty with thought and tender with sentiment. Your poetry is like no other. Those cursed dryads and pagan trumperies of modern verse have put me out of conceit of the very name of poetry. Your verses are as good and as wholesome as prose, and I have made a sad blunder if I do not leave you with an impression that your present is rarely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Letters of Charles Lamb In this edition of the correspondence of Charles Lamb, that of his sister, Mary Lamb, is for the first time included. In it also appear for the first time between seventy and eighty letters, many of them of the highest importance; and it is the first edition to take note in chronological order of those letters printed by other editors that are not available for the present volumes: a step which should, I think, add to the biographical value of the work. In these two volumes I have, after much consideration, placed my notes at the end of each letter, rather than, as in the five preceding volumes, at the end of the book. My reason for doing so was twofold: in the first place, to serve the convenience of the reader, to whom annotation of the correspondence is often a necessity, and not, as in the case of the other writings, a luxury; and in the second place, because by joining the letters with a few words of commentary they can be made practically into a consecutive Life. The self-conscious deliberate construction of Lamb's essays and poems, each a work of art, forbade the introduction of footnotes that might distract the attention from the true matter of the text: hence, in the preceding five volumes, such remarks as the editor had to make will be found sharply separated from the authors part of the book. But here, where Lamb is often writing without premeditation, with a running pen, and writing moreover for a single reader, it seemed to me that the impropriety of interrupting the correspondence by elucidatory comments was so slight as to be almost non-existent. The Americans loved Lamb, early, as they did Carlyle and Praed, to name two, as dissimilar as may be, of the many British writers who have found their first full appreciation across the Atlantic. Charles Lamb's only acted play met in America a far different fate from that which befell it in England; and I have a notion that his writings were aforetime, and are to-day, more widely read in these United States than in Great Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lamb's Essays: A Biographical Study HE fame of Charles Lamb has increased rather than dimin ished in the fifty-seven years elapsing since his death; and still, as his writings are read and re-read, the personal interest in the man grows stronger. Other writers we are content to know simply as writers; Charles Lamb we must know as a man. If excuse be needed for this volume, it is to be found in this fact. It seemed possible to select and unite such essays as were more directly autobiographical, adding to these a series of annotations, taken largely from the works of Lamb and his contemporaries, and thus to throw, if not new, yet stronger, light on the personal ity of the gentle Elia. Such. In brief, is the plan of the book; and if but one mind gains hereby a truer conception of the depth of that well of English undefyled from which Lamb drew so Copiously, if but one heart is thrilled with a nobler emo tion by contact with the strong life herein revealed, the writer has not failed in her purpose. The essays, with one exception, are copied from magazines in which they first appeared, and many passages omitted in later editions of the essays are replaced. The reasons for omitting these personal references are long since passed; and we cannot afford to lose one word that came fresh and forceful from the author's teeming brain. Corrections and reversions, Lamb always condemned; and all his admirers prefer to read him at first hand, with all his irregularities of spelling and or1g1nalities of diction. The original essays have been reproduced as nearly as possible, with the result, it is hoped, of bringing closer together writer and reader. One has through these occasional glimpses vistas of Lamb's mind, heart, and personality. Indeed in his case the three cannot be separated, for his mind was his heart and his person ality was the combination of the two. He was but one person to his friends and to his readers. Book excerpt: This selection brings together the best prose writings of the great early nineteenth-century essayist Charles Lamb, whose shrewd wit and convivial style have endeared him to generations of readers. These pieces include early discussions of Hogarth and Shakespeare; masterly essays written under the pen-name 'Elia' that range over such subjects as drunkenness, witches, dreams, marriage and the joy of roast pig; and letters to Lamb's circle of contemporaries, among them Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Wryly amused by the world, allusive, searching and endlessly inventive, these are the essential works of a master of English prose. In his introduction Adam Phillips discusses how Charles Lamb's tragic life and sainted reputation, caring for his mentally ill sister Mary, belied the quality of his work. This edition also includes a biographical index of Lamb's correspondents. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist best known for his humorous Essays of Elia from which the essay 'A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig' is taken. Lamb enjoyed a rich social life and became part of a group of young writers that included William Hazlitt, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and Samuel Taylor Coleridge with whom he shared a lifelong friendship. Lamb never achieved the same literary success as his friends but his influence on the English essay form cannot be underestimated and his book, Specimens of the English Dramatic Poets is remembered for popularising the work of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

Book excerpt: An in-depth look into the life of Romantic essayist Charles Lamb and the legacy of his work A pioneer of urban Romanticism, essayist Charles Lamb (1775–1834) found inspiration in London’s markets, theaters, prostitutes, and bookshops. He prized the city’s literary scene, too, where he was a star wit. He counted among his admirers Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His friends valued in his conversation what distinguished his writing style: a highly original blend of irony, whimsy, and melancholy. Eric G. Wilson captures Lamb’s strange charm in this meticulously researched and engagingly written biography. He demonstrates how Lamb’s humor helped him cope with a life‑defining tragedy: in a fit of madness, his sister Mary murdered their mother. Arranging to care for her himself, Lamb saved her from the gallows. Delightful when sane, Mary became Charles’s muse, and she collaborated with him on children’s books. In exploring Mary’s presence in Charles’s darkly comical essays, Wilson also shows how Lamb reverberates in today’s experimental literature.
