I will here men tion one anecdote to verify the above statements It will be seen that I was promoted as soon as my age and service permitted. I looked younger than I was - and I recollect poor Preston, when I exhibited my commission, turning round to Sir Alexander Gordon, and remarking, I say, Gordon, what the devil do the Lords of the Ad miralty mean by appointing such boys to my ship? If he had boys for lieutenants, he had grey-beards for mid shipmen. I was left commanding-officer one day; and, being engaged in some occupation below, was informed by the midshipman of the watch that the serj eant had a complaint to make against the master's mate. I went instantly on deck, and sent for the mate what was my surprise to find a young gentleman as midship men are termed - of upwards of forty years of age, with a grey head and weather-beaten countenance He stood before his beardless judge like Shylock before Portia. I reserved the case for the first-lieutenan t, and went below in my own cabin. I asked the particulars of poor Steel's life -it was the same as many others: he had been only thirty years in the service; and, having no interest, was likely to be thirty more without promotion. I urged him to go to the Admiralty and show himself and through my exertions he procured an interview with the First Lord. Steel mentioned the object of his visit, which was to be promoted. The that Lord said, Why, Mr. Steel, you are too old Steel modestly replied, that it was not his fault that he was not promoted in earlier life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Sailor's Life I AM writing this to show the wonderful mercies the Lord has shown me in fifty years' life-time at sea, and I hope that whoever may have a chance to look at it, it will teach them not to despair, or give them selves up for lost for by perseverance, and a firm trust in the AI mighty, we can do anything that the Giver of all good will allow us to do; for there is a Sweet little cherub that sits up aloft, keeps a watch for the life of poor Jack. By accounts that I had from my friends, when I came to the years of' recollection, I was informed that I was born at sea, in the year of' our Lord 1777, on the 2otb of August my father being master of a brig belonging to Hull in Yorkshire, and when I was born, he was bound on a voyage from London to Hamburg. My mother being at sea along with her husband, and being at sea, and by contrary winds and bad weather being detained longer than what they expected, I was born on board of the J ane and Margaret, belonging to the port of Hull, when the brig was nearly abreast of' Heligoland, an island that lays at the entrance of Hamburg River; but my mother being very podrly, she and I were left at a place called Cuxhaven, at the entrance of the River Elbe. But my father being obliged to proceed upon his voyage, my mother and me were left at Hamburg at the consul's. And the winter setting in sooner and severer than B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sailor, Vol. 2 of 2 Says he - "There is a weighty reason For secrecy in love - as treason; Love is a burglarer, a felon, That at the windore eye does steal in, To rob the heart - and with his prey Steals out again a closer way." Hudibras. I was not very long permitted to enjoy the repose of a half-pay lieutenant; for, scarcely had I succeeded in getting as far as Torquay, when I received a long letter from the Admiralty, appointing me to the Euphrates, then fitting at Sheerness for the Mediterranean station. She was commanded by Captain P, was one of the fir frigates, and sailed at the expiration of four months after I joined her. As I consider we have had quite enough of Gibraltar, Malta, &c., I shall at once proceed to Corfu, (touching at Algiers, ) where the Euphrates remained for six months, being in attendance on that most singular of all men, Sir Thomas Maitland. Sir Thomas was then lord-high-commissioner of the Ionian Islands, governor of Malta, &c. &c. On leaving Gibraltar we touched at Algiers; and here, as we were ordered to await the arrival of Lord Exmouth and his fleet, we came to an anchor in the bay, seizing the idle moment to make the ship appear in proper order, as Captain P. was anxious to keep the Euphrates prepared for any trip. We had constantly a watering party on shore, and thus had numerous opportunities of seeing the town, and cultivating a proper understanding with the turbaned Turk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years at Sea: The Story of a Sailor's Life Nearly all the incidents and scenes depicted in this book have been derived from the-writer's own experience or from the relations of actors and eye witnesses. Nothing in it is matter of pure invention except as to arrangement and the connecting links necessary to preserve the continuity of the narrative, fragments of which have given entertainment to so many listeners, old and young, as to encourage the hope that in a connected form it might interest a wider circle. The chapters describing the fight be tween the Monitor and the Merrimac, and the capture of Fort Fisher, have, in a slightly altered form, already appeared in Lippincott's Magazine, where they were divested of their connection with the hero of the narrative, and became a strictly accurate account of facts which came under the writer's observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hurrah for the Life of a Sailor: Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Several years ago I wrote a series of articles for the 'boy's Own Paper, ' relating some of my ad ventures in the Navy, and my assortment of yarns was very favourably received by the juvenile public for whom it was written. I am consequently en couraged to expand these, bringing the story up to date, and illustrating the principal events, in the hope that they will make an interesting volume, and give some grown-up boys an idea of a sailor's life and experiences during nearly fifty years in her Majesty's service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Many Seas: The Life and Exploits of a Yankee Sailor Whatever value this book may have is due to the fact that-it is the plain story of a plain man, told in his own words. I had often listened to his stories with pleasure, and at last persuaded him to write them down, and it is but just to him to say that my task as editor has been confined to cutting out some yarns which, however suitable to the leisure of the forecastle, would have taken up too much space in print. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life's Voyage: A Diary of a Sailor on Sea and Land, Jotted Down During a Seventy-Years' Voyage The world of letters or literature has its combination of parts and particles, valuable and valueless, and it is only second in grandeur and greatness to the material world, and is the cradle of man's greatness. Without question man's nearest approach to God is in his intel lect and in his resolution, for resolution is omnipotent. Herein it is the intention, the premeditated design, to navigate both the deep, the shoal, the pacific, and the boisterous waters of the historical and the literary seas, and should necessity require, I shall sail close to the wind, but I must endeavor to steer clear of the dangerous rocks, Parody and Travesty. Some superficial critic may cry egotism. It would be beneficial to all such to peruse the immortal Vicar of Wakefield. Seen by its light, she was not pleasant to look upon. Bare-armed, bare-headed, savage chest half bare and sagging in festoons, she stood stayless and unashamed, breathing gin and wickedness. A grin of quiet joy was upon her alcoholic countenance. Nay, more than joy. It was a light of inward ecstasy, and sprang from the fact that a heavy carter's whip was in her hand. Not many feet from the spot on which she stood was the wall of a neighbor's house. Crouching against it so that he was scarcely visible in the darkness was a boy of thirteen. Without stockings or shoes, he wore only a filthy shirt, a thing that had once been a jacket, and a tattered lower gar ment which left his thighs half naked.
