Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pear Thrips (Euthrips Pyri) We believe that if the ground be thoroughly plowed and cultivated during November, December, and January, or before the insects leave the ground, which they begin to do by the first of February, many of these young thrips would be killed or injured or so disturbed that but few would ever reach maturity. Our present manner of cultivation is well adapted to give the thrips a long, undisturbed period of rest. During the late spring and early summer, when thrips are in the ground, we give the soil nothing but light cultivation, and as the insects are still in an active larval stage they seek another place of hiding, if disturbed. After this no cultivation is usually done until the last of February or March of the following year, by which time the insects have left the ground. While the plowing and cultivating method of control has not been thoroughly tried, we believe it gives more promise than any other yet suggested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Control the Pear Thrips By the time the fruit buds have swollen sufficiently to separate the bud scales slightly at the tip the adults force their way within, feeding upon the tenderest portions inside the buds. When the thrips are present in sufficient numbers the buds are completely destroyed and the trees fail entirely to bloom. Eggs. - As soon as the first leaf surfaces or fruit stems are exposed egg laying usually begins, depending somewhat on the variety of fruit attacked. The first eggs are deposited the last days of February and oviposition continues till near the middle of April, being at its maximum, however, from the 10th of March to the 1st of April. Most of the eggs (fig. 3) are deposited just under the epidermis in the fruit stems, young fruit, and leaf stems. The eggs require from five to seventeen days to hatch, the average time being about eight days. Larvae. - By the time the trees are breaking into full bloom the adults have done most of the damage caused by their feeding, and oviposition is at its height. Many of the earlier appearing adults are dying off and larvae (fig. 4) are beginning to appear in numbers. The very first larvae can usually be found about March 20, and are in maximum numbers on the trees, feeding on the small fruit and young foliage, from the first to middle of April. Reaching their full development, the larvae drop from the trees, of their accord or with falling calyces, or are blown by wind or knocked off by rain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Control Methods for the Pear Thrips and Peach Tree Borer Borers are seldom uniformly distributed over an orchard. Small blocks of trees here and there may be badly infested and the most of the orchard comparatively free from the pest. In such cases it is not necessary to treat all of the trees with asphaltum, but it is necessary to examine them carefully, for in no other way can the true conditions be known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pear Growing in California Seeds of commercial pears were planted in the early days of mining in the Sierra foothills of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, and a few oriental pears were set out by the Chinese immigrants. Later, graft ing wood and grafted trees of many varieties, brought from the missions, from eastern states, and even from Europe, were grown to supply fruit to miners and other new settlers. With the discovery of gold, certain enterprising young men who had come in search of the precious ore found that more money could be made by supplying fruit for the satisfaction of the prodigal miners, than by panning gold; and pear growing gained impetus. According to Wickson, the Bartlett was brought around the Horn in 1850 and planted in the Napa Valley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
