Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Duncan Records, Vol. 1 These Selections have been printed with a view of placing in a form available for reference some of the more interesting portions of the "Duncan Records," - a mass of documents, the originals of which exist, though in a very dilapidated state, in the office of the Commissioner of the Benares Division. Jonathan Duncan, the distinguished Administrator from whom these Records take their name, held the important post of "Resident at Benares" between the years 1787 and 1795, and it was under his energetic and able management that the Province of Benares, comprising the Districts of Benares, Jounpore, Mirzapore and Ghazeepore, was rescued from a state of misrule and distress, and eventually placed under that uniform system of Government which the Regulations enacted in 1795 A. D. so fully explain. The subjects considered best entitled to notice have been taken up separately and each made as complete as the materials available would admit of. They have been to a certain, extent recast, but as little deviation as possible from the original text has been allowed, and in the form in which they appear they will, it is believed, supply a considerable amount of interesting information regarding the state of the country at the time, and indicate the steps by which the Benares Province was brought into order at the commencement of British connection with this part of India.
