Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Miguel Hidalgo Y Costilla The celebration this year in Mexico of the centennial of the Grito de Dolores has caused those who are interested in Mexican affairs to ask: What was the Grito de Dolores? and who was Hidalgo, that he should be called the Father of Mexican Independence? The answers to these questions that may be obtained from general histories are thoroughly inadequate and wholly unsatisfying at this period, when Mexico is receiving universal attention. Such histories present Hidalgo in the light of an insurrectionist, a fanatic perhaps, who had the temerity to lead a revolt against the regularly constituted Government of one of the Spanish dependencies in America, and whose public career was ended by the defeat of his cause and his own death within a year. They fail to show any relation between his insurrectionary movement and the establishment of a wholly factitious Mexican Independence eleven years later; nor do they reveal a relationship with constitutional government in Mexico, and the rise of a self-conscious commonwealth to a respected place among the nations of the earth. The Independent Mex1can Nat1on. THE stage upon which the drama of the Independence of Mexico was enacted was of comparatively narrow scope. But there was a larger expanse of territory, containing an immense population, influenced by the life of Hidalgo and the principles which he and his successors promulgated. The short-lived Empire which was hastily established for Iturbide was territorially the fourth largest in the world, the British Empire, China, and Russia alone being larger. It was divided into five Captaincies-General and included a large and but partially explored region north of the Rio Grande del Norte, extending to the Pacific Ocean. In the south, Guatemala was lopped off while the Independence was pending, and Chiapas became a part of Mexico in partial compensation. These incidents in the historical geography of the country excited little commotion at the time, in the midst of so many more important happenings. It was an Empire of magnificent opportunities, and of natural resources without limit, though but little known at that time. By the revolt of the Texans in 1836; by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848 at the close of the war with the United States, and by a treaty in 1853 made with James Gadsden representing the United States, Mexican territory was reduced to its present area. It contains a population of more than fourteen millions living under the influence of the Grito de Dolores. The Independence of Mexico was recognized by the United States in 1822, and a Minister Plenipotentiary was sent to the new nation. The United States furthermore resolved to assist in securing the recognition of Mexican Independence by the European nations and advanced, at the instance of England's Minister of Foreign...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year. "A work of scope and profound insight into the divided soul of Mexico." —History Today The Life and Times of Mexico is a grand narrative driven by 3,000 years of history: the Indian world, the Spanish invasion, Independence, the 1910 Revolution, the tragic lives of workers in assembly plants along the border, and the experiences of millions of Mexicans who live in the United States. Mexico is seen here as if it were a person, but in the Aztec way; the mind, the heart, the winds of life; and on every page there are portraits and stories: artists, shamans, teachers, a young Maya political leader; the rich few and the many poor. Earl Shorris is ingenious at finding ways to tell this story: prostitutes in the Plaza Loreto launch the discussion of economics; we are taken inside two crucial elections as Mexico struggles toward democracy; we watch the creation of a popular "telenovela" and meet the country's greatest living intellectual. The result is a work of magnificent scope and profound insight into the divided soul of Mexico.

In a world where Christianity is growing everywhere but the West, the Understanding World Christianity series offers a fresh, readable orientation to Christianity around the world. Understanding World Christianity is organized geographically, by nation and region. Noted experts, in most cases native to the area of focus, present a balanced history of Christianity and a detailed discussion of the faith as it is lived today. Each volume addresses six key 'intersections' of Christianity in a given context including the historical, denominational, socio-political, geographical, biographical and theological settings. Accessible in tone and brief in length, Understanding World Christianity: Mexico is an ideal introduction for students, mission leaders, and all who wish to know how Christianity is influenced, and is influenced by, the Mexican context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an early age, Frederic Chopin displayed natural musical ability. Often compared to Mozart, Chopin was invited to play for members of the aristocracy in small, private concerts. But, unlike Mozart, his parents did not take advantage of his childhood talent. Frederic Chopin left his Polish homeland behind when he was only 20 and lived most of his life in Paris, France, the cultural hub of Europe. His genius as a pianist and composer flowered there with the encouragement and support of the female novelist George Sand. He wrote more than 200 works for piano during the course of his life which was cut short by tuberculosis at the age of 39. Symbolically, his heart was taken from his body and returned to his beloved Poland, where he remains a national hero.
