Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Henry Clay, Vol. 2 of 2 In the introduction of this work, the author announced as one of his rules in its composition, that he had confined himself to the life and career of Mr. Clay, and that he does not profess to give history any further than Mr. Clay has been connected with it. He also suggested, that ho has not been able to use all the materials found within these limits. It will be obvious, therefore, that wide as has been his range, and comprehensive as has been the view of public affairs which he has been obliged to take, the history contained in these volumes is rather personal than general. It can not but be observed, that Mr. Clay's public life has been one of conflict, and that the principles and measures he has advocated, have been stormed by opposition, often amounting to animated hostility, and sometimes to bitter personal animosity. It can not, therefore, be surprising, but should be expected, that the author, sympathizing with Mr. Clay's principles, and with himself when assailed on account of his principles, should earnestly, when he could conscientiously, defend both the one and the other. How else could he do justice to his subject? This duty of the author has necessarily led him to use some freedom of remark toward public men. The times of Mr. Clay have been characterized with strife for great and vital principles of a young republic. In whatever he has been right, we could not be vindicated, without a showing of the wrong, and it has so happened, that the wrong done to the country, as well as to Mr. Clay, has, in some instances, according to the convictions of the author, been very great and flagrant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay: Down to 1848 Several sketches, more or less elaborate, of the character and career of Henry Clay, appeared during his life-time, oftener prefixed to collections of his speeches; though one independent memoir, of decided merit, was written more than twenty years since by George D. Prentice, Editor of the Louisville Journal, and then widely disseminated. That, however, has long been out of print, while the more eventful and memorable half of Mr. Clay's biography was yet in the future when Mr. Prentice wrote. And I have reason to believe that Mr. Clay himself gave the preference, among all the narratives of his life which had fallen under his notice, to that of Epes Sargent, first issued in 1842, and republished, with its author's revisions and additions, in the summer of 1848. The aim of Mr. Sargent was not so much to impart his own conception of Mr. Clay's views and motives as to enable every reader to infer them directly from the Statesman's own words, or those of his illustrious cotemporaries - whether compatriots or rivals. His work, therefore, is rather a collection of authentic materials for the future biographer than an original and exhaustive essay.
