On my way here I made several calls till I reached Bro. C's., as my horse was tired Bro. C. kindly put his horse to the wagon and brought me through, making the day's ride sixty-five miles. When I found a goodly number come together and waiting for the minister to come, and I tried to preach from "Search me O God" etc. though I found myself very much exhausted. But there was an ungainly and wicked set of people, and an opportunity to do much good. There were perhaps two hundred or two hundred and fifty present the first evening. To day but a little handful to the prayer meeting, and a small number at the preaching in the afternoon. To night a large congregation out and the spirit of God is evidently moving upon many hearts. But there are a vast variety of folks here. There are Seceders, Covenanters two kinds of Baptists, two kinds of Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationlists and Episcopalians, Mormons, Christians, and Universalists. So you can see what a motley mess there is, and they are made up of Dutch, Scotch, English, Irish, French, Canadian and Yankees and each with their prejudices and predilections and nothing but the wisdom and power of God will accomplish any thing here. Thus to "become all things to all men" is a vast and great work and one which I feel entirely inadequate for the task. But Ido know that God will guide me, and keep me ifI will only lean upon His almighty arm. I found that the Episcopal clergyman had been rather forestalling the minds of some ofthe people and had intimated they were all weak minded and ignorant ones who were converted in their meeting. But weak as they are, they are the very ones he has tried most faithfully to get into his church. I pray God he may find...

Book excerpt: In 1834 the weary missionary Jason Lee arrived on the banks of the Willamette River and began to build a mission to convert the local Kalapuya and Chinook populations to the Methodist Church. The denomination had become a religious juggernaut in the United States, dominating the religious scene throughout the mid-Atlantic and East Coast. But despite its power and prestige and legions of clergy and congregants, Methodism fell short of its goals of religious supremacy in the northwest corner of the continent. In A Country Strange and Far Michael C. McKenzie considers how and why the Methodist Church failed in the Pacific Northwest and how place can affect religious transplantation and growth. Methodists failed to convert local Native people in large numbers, and immigrants who moved into the rural areas and cities of the Northwest wanted little to do with Methodism. McKenzie analyzes these failures, arguing the region itself--both the natural geography of the place and the immigrants' and clergy's responses to it--was a primary reason for the church's inability to develop a strong following there. The Methodists' efforts in the Pacific Northwest provide an ideal case study for McKenzie's timely region-based look at religion.

Book excerpt: North Wales in the early part of the nineteenth century provides a striking instance of the way in which a spiritual revolution can change the whole direction of a people and a society. Equally striking was the agency which brought the prevailing religious indifference and lawlessness to an end: it was the preaching of the gospel by men without position or influence like John Elias. Under the preaching of Elias, the outlook of thousands was permanently changed. They not only heard of the crucifixion of Christ, but felt that they had seen it. 'I felt, said one hearer, 'as if the earth shook for miles around me.' This account by Edward Morgan traces the life and ministry of Elias from his first religious impressions until the day when 10,000 attended his funeral in Anglesey, the scene of most of his labours. Here, in days of revival, forty-four chapels were built in forty years. To Elias' life and the lessons to be drawn from it are added his letters and other papers originally published as a separate volume. Previously published by the Trust in this form in 1973, the Life, Letters and Essays of John Elias is now reckoned among Christian classics.
