Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay More than thirty years have already passed since the Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay first saw the light; and the author of that book has now reached the age when it is none too soon to set his affairs in order, and put his work into the final shape in which he would wish the world to read it. I have thought it prudent to use a very sparing hand in dealing with Macaulay's biography; for I have been warned by the examples, which literary history only too frequently affords, of the risk inseparable from any attempt to alter the form, or increase the bulk, of a literary production that has had the good fortune not to displease the public. The existing text has accordingly been left untouched; but new matter of importance will nevertheless be found between the covers. Fresh notes have been inserted at the close of the Fourth, the Eleventh, and the Fourteenth Chapters. The First Appendix contains a contemporary account of Macaulay's earliest appearance upon a public platform, written by a lady who was a family friend of the young orator; and the Third Appendix pictures Macaulay in his aspect of a customer at the book-stalls. A more noteworthy addition to this book is the Sixteenth Chapter which, now concludes the volume. That chapter gives a selection, some parts of which have never yet been published, from the remarks pencilled by my uncle on the blank spaces of volumes that he had in reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, Vol. 1 of 2 This work has been undertaken principally from a conviction that it is the performance of a duty which, to the best of my ability, it is incumbent on me to fulfill. Though even on this ground I can not appeal to the forbearance of my readers, I may venture to refer to a peculiar difficulty which I have experienced in dealing with Lord Macaulay's private papers. To give to the world compositions not intended for publication may be no injury to the fame of writers who, by habit, were careless and hasty workmen; but it is far otherwise in the case of one who made it a rule for himself to publish nothing which was not carefully planned, strenuously labored, and minutely finished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to Trevelyan's Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay (Cabinet Ed., 1878) IT will not be thought necessary to urge the claims of Biography generally to be represented in the Index Society, seeing that if it cannot appeal to any special class of searchers, it is only because there is no province of literature which does not fall under its sway, no toilers in the field of Letters who have not something to do with the study of the lives of others. Nor will Index-lovers, who are fond of Macaulay's writings, look for any reason for the appearance of this Index beyond the bare fact that Mr. Trevelyan sent his book into the World Without its 'bag and baggage.' But if it were necessary to reason the need of the thing, without stopping to consider whether this Life of Macaulay is to be ranked among great English biographies or no, it might be held sufficient to run the eye over nearly any page of this Index, and note the number of men famous above their kind in the most varied walks of life. In one page will be found specified entries under the names of Bulwer Lytton, Bunyan, Buonaparte, and Burke; in another Lord Carlisle and Thomas Carlyle face us cheek by jowl; in a third, Dickens and Disraeli, or Gibbon and Gladstone, or Southey, de Stael and Stanley. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her study of the unsuccessful nineteenth-century emigrant, Tamara S. Wagner argues that failed emigration and return drive nineteenth-century writing in English in unexpected, culturally revealing ways. Wagner highlights the hitherto unexplored subgenre of anti-emigration writing that emerged as an important counter-current to a pervasive emigration propaganda machine that was pressing popular fiction into its service. The exportation of characters at the end of a novel indisputably formed a convenient narrative solution that at once mirrored and exaggerated public policies about so-called 'superfluous' or 'redundant' parts of society. Yet the very convenience of such pat endings was increasingly called into question. New starts overseas might not be so easily realizable; emigration destinations failed to live up to the inflated promises of pro-emigration rhetoric; the 'unwanted' might make a surprising reappearance. Wagner juxtaposes representations of emigration in the works of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Frances Trollope, and Charlotte Yonge with Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian settler fiction by Elizabeth Murray, Clara Cheeseman, and Susanna Moodie, offering a new literary history not just of nineteenth-century migration, but also of transoceanic exchanges and genre formation.

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1959, this book examines the history of classical education in Britain, beginning in the sixteenth century with the rise of humanism, which emphasized the importance of reading only the best Latin authors and re-introduced Roman structures of education in the form of grammar schools. Clarke also uses Scotland to compare and contrast with the educational history of England, particularly the ways in which the teaching of classics changed and developed over time. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of education in general, and the history of classical education in particular.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest figures of his age, Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-59) was widely admired throughout his life for his prose, poetry, political acumen and oratorical skills. Among the most successful and enthralling histories ever written, his History of England won instantaneous success following the publication of its first volumes in 1849, and was rapidly translated into most European languages. Beginning with the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and concluding at the end of the reign of William III in 1702, it illuminates a time of deep struggle throughout Britain and Ireland in vivid and compelling prose. But while Macaulay offers a gripping narrative, and draws on a wide range of sources including historical accounts and creative literature, his enduring success also owes a great deal to his astonishing ability to grasp, and explain, the political reality that has always underpinned social change.
