Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Myth of the Level Playing Field examines the idea prevalent in American culture that all Americans have a level playing field and an equal opportunity for success. It describes the essential elements of life in order to decide if there is, indeed, equal access to nutritious, affordable food; to affordable, quality healthcare; top life without risk to safety or liberty; to quality education; to affordable, safe housing; and to legal ways to make a living to support a decent lifestyle. The author, Jerry Fowler, analyzed these elements, pointing out common themes and drawing conclusions and thus recommending changes in public policy, legal philosophy, political behaviors, popular attitudes, personal responsibility, and political ideology. This book offers psychological insights as well as political and economic analysis. Any reader that suspects that the game is rigged will have those suspicions validated. Those who think that all that is required for success is hard work and persistence will come to see the fallacy of this idea. This book will generate discussion and increase awareness of the system’s inequities, foster compassion for those less fortunate, and entice them to vote for significant change in American society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back Cover Copy Humans have exploited a huge diversity of materials throughout history. Today’s conflict between rising demands and dwindling resources raises searching questions about how optimally to meet humanity’s needs efficiently and safely, challenging common assumptions. Plastics support many facets of modern life yet raise associated problems, whilst ‘natural’ materials may be far from benign when inputs extending their longevity are considered. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a plastic with adaptable, durable and other properties used in diverse construction, medical, information technology, domestic and many applications besides. However, PVC has faced significant NGO pressure relating to its chlorine content and the range of additives conferring desirable properties. Yet, unlike organochlorine pesticides, PVC plastic is inert and recyclable after providing long service life. This book is not ‘pro-PVC’, but draws on lessons learned from how the PVC value chain, particularly across Europe, has engaged with problems and made further progress under voluntary commitments to sustainable development. The book advocates a ‘level playing field’ of common sustainability principles for assessment of the benefits and risks of the use of all materials in the context of their incorporation within whole product life cycles, from raw material extraction to beyond end-of-life. The use of every material raises specific challenges, but also shares common problems arising from society’s legacy of wasteful, linear resource use. Activities surrounding the PVC value chain have generated novel ideas, assessment techniques and reconsideration of regulatory approaches relevant to sustainability assessment of the use of all materials in the context of whole product life cycles on a common ‘level playing field’, which best supports the meeting of the diversity of human needs in the safest and most efficient manner. This book is aimed at industry, regulatory and NGO audiences and influence on wider media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Consultation¿ has become something of a mantra in contemporary governance. Governments well understand that policy occurs in a highly contestable environment in which there are multiple, and often competing interests. They well recognise the political imperative to `engage¿ stakeholders in order to manage potential conflict and, hopefully, obtain acceptance for their policies and programs. As a result, politicians and public officials frequently emphasise the need for consultation as an essential element of the deliberative processes underpinning the development of policy or the implementation of programs and services. But, moving beyond the rhetoric of consultation and engagement, how well is it done? In this monograph, Professor Jenny Stewart maps out the principal approaches used by governments to consult with and engage affected communities of interest. Stewart critically assesses the available literature and draws directly upon the experiences of political actors, bureaucrats and community sector organisations in order to identify the `good, bad, and the ugly¿ of engagement. Through a judicious use of selected case studies, Stewart distils the essential dilemmas and contradictions inherent in many consultation strategies and highlights their relative strengths and weaknesses. This monograph is a probing and dispassionate analysis of the rationales, methodologies and outcomes of consultation and engagement. It is not intended to be a `cookbook¿ or a `how to¿ manual for those consulting or the consulted. Nevertheless, there is much here for the policy practitioner, the researcher and members of those `communities of interest¿ who might, one day, find themselves the target of engagement.

Book excerpt: The Eternal State of Homelessness parallels the plight and suffering of the homeless individuals we see around us with what eternal homelessness must be like. Their plight and suffering serve a purpose; they paint a vivid picture of what our eternal existence might be like if we do not stop, take notice, and prepare accordingly. This book describes the consequences of not playing by ironic rules associated with a level playing field. These upside down rules bring ultimate balance and justice to the Universe. On this level playing field, amongst mortals Death is batting a thousand. As such, a day is coming where role reversal will occur where their suffering now, though temporary, may provide them with an eternal home, and our comfort now, though temporary, may reward us with eternal homelessness. To be fair, the homeless should hold up cardboard signs that say, "Behold, I am a picture of what you may one day become. My suffering is but for a moment; yours is for eternity."

Book excerpt: “It rained cats and dogs”, “I know where his shoe pinches”, “Yes, it was really a blessing in disguise”… These idioms are often used in common language in our day to day talk or even correspondence. Their usage makes the communication and message to be conveyed quite effective. Dictionary defines idiom as “a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of the individual words.” Idiom is a combination of words with figurative meanings. It often creates a picturesque image and that image conveys the meaning. For e.g. ‘where the shoe pinches’ the image automatically creates the image of pain and trouble and the place where there is trouble. Similarly, ‘add fuel to the fire’—it creates the image of fire blazing more and the meaning of aggravation comes out. The following example is widely employed to illustrate the point. Dictionary of Idioms by Mahesh Sharma: "Dictionary of Idioms: Unlocking the Meanings Behind Expressions" by Mahesh Sharma is a comprehensive reference guide that explores the world of idiomatic expressions. Book excerpt: ALIEN (al-yun) adj. 1 Of another country; foreign 2 Hence, of foreign character; not similar; incongruous; also, owing allegiance to a foreign country. LOVE (luv) noun, verb. 1 ? Do you love chocolate? Why does The Love Shoppe sell lingerie? If your son was a thief, or a drug dealer, would you report him to the authorities? Whatever love was intended to be, it has become the sentiment which embraces immorality, overlooks the injustices committed by those closest to us, as well as that which intertwines itself with human sexuality. For many of us, if we were to see love as it is, we would scarcely recognize it. In its purest form, authentic love has the appearance of something foreign. Love has been lost in our culture, if we ever even had it in the first place. Finding the way of love begins by coming to meet The One whose nation is not of this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book rethinks the key concepts of International Relations by drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu. The last few years have seen a genuine wave of publications promoting sociology in international relations. Scholars have suggested that Bourdieu's vocabulary can be applied to study security, diplomacy, migration and global environmental politics. Yet we still lack a systematic and accessible analysis of what Bourdieu-inspired IR might look like. This book provides the answer. It offers an introduction to Bourdieu's thinking to a wider IR audience, challenges key assumptions, which currently structure IR scholarship - and provides an original, theoretical restatement of some of the core concepts in the field. The book brings together a select group of leading IR scholars who draw on both theoretical and empirical insights from Bourdieu. Each chapter covers one central concept in IR: Methodology, Knowledge, Power, Strategy, Security, Culture, Gender, Norms, Sovereignty and Integration. The chapters demonstrate how these concepts can be reinterpreted and used in new ways when exposed to Bourdieusian logic. Challenging key pillars of IR scholarship, Bourdieu in International Relations will be of interest to critical theorists, and scholars of IR theory.
