Book excerpt: THE LIBRARY OF GREAT SUFI POETS Book Eight Majnun, Rab'ia al-Adawiyya, Mahsati Ganjavi, Hasan Dehlavi & Aatish Translation & Introduction Paul Smith MAJNUN was a youth, a famous Bedouin poet (immortalised by Nizami) in the seventh century of the Bani Amir tribe in the Najd desert in Arabia. He fell in love with Layla from the same tribe whom he was denied. Most of his recorded poetry was composed before his descent into love-madness (mast) then through a Perfect Master... his spiritual unification with his beloved. RABI'A (717-801). Throughout her life, her Love of God, poverty and self-denial did not waver. More interesting than her absolute asceticism is the actual concept of Divine Love that Rabi'a introduced. She was the first to introduce the idea that God should be loved for God's own sake. She is widely considered to be the most important of the early Sufi poets. MAHSATI (1098-1185) lived in Ganjeh and was a court, dervish (Sufi) and ribald poet. She knew Nizami and Khayyam and composed mainly in the ruba'i form and helped to revolutionize it. HASAN DEHLAVI (1253-1328) was a close friend of the great Amir Khusrau and also achieved greatness as a poet and Sufi. He composed over 800 ghazals; influenced by Sadi he was called the 'Sadi of Hindustan'. AATISH (1777-1847). Khwaja Haidar Ali... pen-name Aatish ('fire') was born in Faizabad. His ancestors had been dervishes and religious men. His words are simple and carefully chosen. His ghazals are on the traditional themes of human and divine love. Correct rhymes are kept in all poems. Biographies & Bibliographies. Introduction on Sufi Poetry and its Forms. 6" x 9" 462 pages. Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Rab'ia, Mahsati, Sana'i, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Baba Farid, Mu'in, Lalla Ded, Mahsati, Iqbal, Rahman Baba and many others and his own poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books, 12 screenplays. www.newhumanitybooks.com

Book excerpt: THE LIBRARY OF GREAT SUFI POETS Book SevenHatef Isfahani, Hali, Seemab Akbarabadi, The 'Mantle' PoetsTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithHATEF (d. 1784) is mainly remembered for his beautiful and remarkable, much celebrated tarji-band in Persian. Here is a complete translation in the correct form, with the beauty and meaning of this great poem revealed... plus a selection of his ruba'is and ghazals. Introduction: HALI (1837-1914) has a special place in Urdu Sufi literature. He was poet, critic, teacher, reformer and prose-writer. He had no formal education yet he acquired through his own efforts Urdu, Persian and Arabic and English. He wrote biographies of Ghalib and Sadi and others. This is a translation of 87 of his ruba'is and it has the correct rhyme structure of the originals. SEEMAB began ghazal writing in the 19th century and became a disciple of the poet Dagh. He composed a remarkable Urdu translation in rhyming poetry of the Quran. His ghazals are suffused with true Sufism. THE 'MANTLE 'POETS: Ka'b ibn Zuhair (died 7th century A.D.) at first opposed Prophet Muhammad. Finally, he secretly went to Medina and approached the Prophet to ask if one who repented and embraced the faith would be forgiven. Mohammed answered yes and the poet asked, "Even Ka'b ibn Zuhair?" Ka'b revealed his identity and read a poem, his Banat Suad that became his most famous poem. As a reward Prophet Mohammed took off his mantle (cloak) and put it on Ka'b's shoulders. The second was composed by Sufi, Imam al-Busiri (1210-1297). The third poet was the great Ahmed Shawqi (1869 - 1932). So far there are six more volumes in this series. Pages 403.Paul Smith (b.

Book excerpt: THE LIBRARY OF GREAT SUFI POETS Book NineRahim, Urfi, Faizi, Dard & ZafarTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithRAHIM (1556-1627) was a Sufi/Bhakti poet and scholar and linguist and great patron of the arts under Emperor Akbar He was famous for his poetry and generosity. Here is a selection of ruba'is, a ghazal, but mainly of his dohas, a rhymed couplet that is a wise, complete thought in itself. URFI (1555-1591) lived in Shiraz until he was twenty-six when he decided to go to India and arrived in the Deccan in 1582 and from there went to Agra where he met the Rahim and became one of his group. His Divan was popular during his lifetime and consisted of ghazals, qasidas and about ruba'is and qit'as. Most of his poems are Sufi in content. FAIZI (1547-1595) held the honorary title Malek ol-shoara (king of poets). This Sufi poet-laureate of Akbar assisted him in his efforts at reform, which were aimed at reconciling Indians of different faiths. His ghazals show the influence of Hafiz and Jami and Fighani and are early examples of the 'Indian Style'. DARD (1720-1784) is considered one of the three great poets of the Delhi school of classical Urdu poetry. He is firstly a Sufi poet who saw the physical world as a veil of the Divine Reality and this world a pathway. ZAFAR (1775-1862) was the last of the Mughal emperors in India, as well as the last ruler of the Timurid Dynasty. Zafar was a much loved Urdu poet and Sufi who often held poetry readings at his court that the poets Zauq, Ghalib, Momin, Shefta and Dagh attended. He wrote a large number of Urdu ghazals, ruba'is and other forms of Sufi poetry, most here represented. Correct rhymes are kept in all poems. Biographies & Selected Bibliographies. Book excerpt: Chosen by author Elizabeth Gilbert as one of her ten favorite books, Daniel Ladinsky’s extraordinary renderings of 250 unforgettable lyrical poems by Hafiz, one of the greatest Sufi poets of all time More than any other Persian poet—even Rumi—Hafiz expanded the mystical, healing dimensions of poetry. Because his poems were often ecstatic love songs from God to his beloved world, many have called Hafiz the “Invisible Tongue.” Indeed, Daniel Ladinsky has said that his work with Hafiz is an attempt to do the impossible: to render Light into words—to make the Luminous Resonance of God tangible to our finite senses. I am a hole in a flute that the Christ's breath moves through— listen to this music! With this stunning collection of Hafiz’s most intimate poems, Ladinsky has succeeded brilliantly in presenting the essence of one of Islam’s greatest poetic and religious voices. Each line of The Gift imparts the wonderful qualities of this master Sufi poet and spiritual teacher: encouragement, an audacious love that touches lives, profound knowledge, generosity, and a sweet, playful genius unparalleled in world literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE Whenever I chanced upon to hear melodies of Punjabi Sufi poets sung by folk singers, qawwaals or other accomplished musicians, I was always fascinated by their mysticism, their professed love for the Divine Beloved, their sincerity of purpose, the simplicity of their language, down-to-earth similes, most appropriate metaphors to drive home a point, and, some times, I wondered how very rich these compositions were in content, which, in fact, spurred me on the undertake study of Punjabi Sufi poetry in greater detail. During the course of this study I was pleasantly surprised when, in my search, I came across a treasure-trove of Divine Knowledge and Spiritual Realisation of a high order. It was also learnt that how these Sufi poets exercised a profound influence in the lives of the people and were responsible to a great extent for evolving a composite culture of the Punjab. They not only led the vanguard of progress in Punjabi language and literature but also, by the nobility of their pious feelings and rhythmic rendition, inspired the people to seek the Divine Love. The history of the Punjab from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries has seen many storms and peaceful interludes. These vicissitudes are reflected in the poetry of the Sufis. The Sufis, in the process, contributed a great deal in maintaining mental equilibrium of diverse communities in troublous times in the medieval ages. Their friendly and tolerant utt4erances retained the favour of both the Hindus as well as the Muslims and influenced the people's thought and sent the message of peace, love, fellowship, understanding and amity to every home and hamlet. They bestowed a remarkable legacy of communal harmony for posterity. I have tried to capture the essence of Sufi sayings and elaborate them into this book with the hope that it may help others in understanding the great Punjabi Sufi poets of yore and their contribution to bringing about a spirit of solidarity amongst different communities. It is not in any way an exhaustive study of the subject. As the Punjabi poetry was written by the Sufis in Persian script and, to maintain authenticity and originality, the verses of the Sufi poets in the book have been printed in Persian, as also in Devnagari and Roman scripts for easy comprehension and wider understanding. As regards the translations, or transliterations as some would prefer to call them, I would like to mention that it is not possible to preserve in any translation or transliteration the inherent depth, beauty and charm of the original, but for the benefit of those who are not so well-acquainted with the Punjabi language it was considered necessary that explanations in the form of translation should be given. So an attempt has been made to give a sense atleast. Another object which has prompted me in writing this book is that after truncation of the Punjab. In the wake of partition of India into Bharat and Pakistan in 1947 A.D., the original sources of information, regrettably, are fast disappearing I felt that I must explore, exploit and, where still possible, preserve this information, before it is too late. To me the study of poetry of the great Punjabi Sufi poets has been a source of tremendous strength, happiness and satisfaction. In the pious, full of Love Divine and rhythmic poetry of the Sufis of the Punjab, I have always found gems of wisdom, high intellect, profound spiritualism, hidden advices, solace and glory of the Divine Beloved, which brings peace and tranquility upon mind and spirit. I can only hope that this book will enable many others to derive the same benefits. A comprehensive glossary deals with the Sufistic terms to be found in the book. I have prepared this glossary as a soft of Sufistic dictionary and attempted to give various meanings of the words which, I believe, will be found useful in allegorical interpretation of Sufistic terms. I take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to Dr. Syed Amir Hassan Abidi, Professor Emeritus, Department of Persian, University of Delhi, for favouring me greatly by writing a valuable 'Foreword' to this book. I am grateful to Iran Society of Calcutta, a premier literary society in eastern India, for undertaking the onerous task of publication of this book which is expected to be especially useful for all those who cherish and seek Love Divine. R.M. CHOPRA Calcutta August 1999

Book excerpt: Written from the ninth to the twentieth century, these poems represent the peak of Islamic Mystical writing, from Rabia Basri to Mian Mohammad Baksh. Reflecting both private devotional love and the attempt to attain union with God and become absorbed into the Divine, many poems in this edition are imbued with the symbols and metaphors that develop many of the central ideas of Sufism: the Lover, the Beloved, the Wine, and the Tavern; while others are more personal and echo the poet's battle to leave earthly love behind. These translations capture the passion of the original poetry and are accompanied by an introduction on Sufism and the common themes apparent in the works. This edition also includes suggested further reading.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Smash Cut, Flannery, and City Poet delivers the first popular biography of Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian poet revered by contemporary Western readers. Ecstatic love poems of Rumi, a Persian poet and Sufi mystic born over eight centuries ago, are beloved by millions of readers in America as well as around the world. He has been compared to Shakespeare for his outpouring of creativity and to Saint Francis of Assisi for his spiritual wisdom. Yet his life has long remained the stuff of legend rather than intimate knowledge. In this breakthrough biography, Brad Gooch brilliantly brings to life the man and puts a face to the name Rumi, vividly coloring in his time and place—a world as rife with conflict as our own. The map of Rumi’s life stretched over 2,500 miles. Gooch traces this epic journey from Central Asia, where Rumi was born in 1207, traveling with his family, displaced by Mongol terror, to settle in Konya, Turkey. Pivotal was the disruptive appearance of Shams of Tabriz, who taught him to whirl and transformed him from a respectable Muslim preacher into a poet and mystic. Their vital connection as teacher and pupil, friend and beloved, is one of the world’s greatest spiritual love stories. When Shams disappeared, Rumi coped with the pain of separation by composing joyous poems of reunion, both human and divine. Ambitious, bold, and beautifully written, Rumi’s Secret reveals the unfolding of Rumi’s devotion to a "religion of love," remarkable in his own time and made even more relevant for the twenty-first century by this compelling account.
