Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of American Biography, Vol. 1 The great political consequences of the war of the revolution have thrown into comparative oh scurity the previous military history of the British North American Colonies. In reality, however, the military efforts made by those Colonies, not only in the Seven Years' war, but in that of 1744, were of great importance. Large forces were kept on foot; distant and important expeditions were undertaken with success; valuable con quests were achieved; and, on more than one occasion, a very decisive influence on the politics of Europe was exercised by the colonial govern ments. Great importance would have been at tached to these transactions, but for the greater importance and interest of those, which followed so close upon them, in the war of the Revolution. But it is not the least of the reasons, why we ought to study the history of these earlier wars, that they formed in reality the great school, in which the military leaders of the Revolution were trained. Judging rather from success in the execution of a plan, than from the inventive genius and foresight displayed in its formation, mankind are apt to give to wild but fortunate daring the praise, which is due only to judgment, activity, and skill, even when unsuccessfully exerted. It has been well observed of Columbus, that, had he yielded to the entreaties of his crew but a few hours sooner than he had determined to do, his name, if it had survived at all, would have been remembered only as that of a half insane projector. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Biography, Vol. 4 'Among the adventurous spirits, whom a rest less love of enterprise called from the bosom of repose in England to new scenes and untried perils in our Western wilds, there is no one whose name awakens more romantic associations, than Captain John Smith. His life is as brilliant and exciting as a Fairy tale; and the remarkable adventures he went through served to develop fully his no less remarkable character. It was his good fortune to live in stirring and eventful times, congenial to his bold and roving dis position, and, luckily for posterity, his adventures have been preserved in a characteristic narrative written by himself, from which the principal facts in the following biographical sketch have been drawn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Americans: Their Lives and Times A Disposition to belittle and disparage public men is very properly held to be a characteristic failing of the Republic. Yet we are told that it is not more prevalent in our American Union than it was in the commonwealths of ancient Greece, and that it is not more distinctly marked in the United States of to-day than it was during the lifetime of the fathers of the country. Whether it be more justifiable is a question less open to discussion than whether there is great danger of its being too freely indulged There is certainly no necessary connection between the service of the people and the imputation of base motives to those who, by election or appointment, assume public responsibilities. It is equally certain that there is nothing more misleading than to deal with a human being, in any of the relations of life, as a mere bundle of qualities attributed to him by common rumor, and associated with none of the shades of character, impulse, and motive which really combine to make him what he is. CHAPTER V. British retreat from Philadelphia. ? Greene strenuously advises an Attack upon the British Army. ? Battle of Monmouth. ? Joins General Sullivan and Count d'Estaing in Rhode Island. ? Attempt to draw the Enemy from Newport. As the season for action drew nigh, the attention of the American commander was turned to the movements of the enemy, and every means put into play, in order to penetrate their plans for the new campaign. Several concurring circumstances seemed to indicate an intention on the part of Clinton, who had recently been appointed in the place of Howe, to evacuate Philadelphia, but whether with the intention of returning over land to New York, or of engaging in some more dis- Vol. x. 5 tant enterprise, was exceedingly doubtful. At length, on the morning of the 18th of June, positive information was received that he had crossed the Delaware, and it soon became evident that he would direct his march through the Jerseys. Not a moment was lost in putting the army in motion; six brigades were pushed forward to watch and retard the movements of the enemy, and, by the 22d, the whole of the American force was once more on the eastern bank of the Delaware. Still great doubts were entertained as to the expediency of offering battle. General Lee, who seems never to have had much confidence in American soldiers, or to have placed too much in the prowess of the British, was decidedly opposed even to a partial attack, and the majority of the general officers, yielding to his authority, concurred in this opinion. To this degrading resolution Gr...
