Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Libraries of Indiana This was carried into effect by a general law for the establish ment of county libraries in 1818, and there had been adopted, in 1816, a very good law for the incorporation of public libra ries in general. The two, with various amendments added in later years, covered the public library system of the State until' after the adoption of the Constitution of 1851. The county libraries thus established furnished the chief part of the books to which the Indiana public had access during the remainder of the first half of the present century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do locks of Edgar Allan Poe’s hair, Sylvia Plath’s attractive handmade paper dolls, John Ford’s Oscars, and Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 cigars have in common? They are just a few of the fascinating objects found in the world-famous Lilly Library, located on the campus of Indiana University Bloomington. In this beautifully illustrated A-to-Z volume, Darlene J. Sadlier journeys through the library’s wide-ranging collections to highlight dozens of intriguing items and the archives of which they are a part. Read about life and death masks of John Keats, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Dreiser; Walt Whitman’s last pencil; and vintage board games, mechanical puzzles, and even comic books. Among the more peculiar items are a pair of elk teeth and an eerily realistic wall-mount bust of Boris Karloff. Sadlier writes engagingly about the Lilly Library’s major historical collections, which include Civil War diaries and a panopticon of the war called the Myriopticon; War of 1812 payment receipts to spies; and the World War II letters and V-mail of journalist Ernie Pyle. This copiously illustrated, entertaining, and educational book will inspire you to take your own journey and discover for yourself the wonders of the Lilly Library.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Indiana State Law Library The Indiana State Law Library had its beginning in act passed by the Legislature in 1867, providing separate rooms for the law books then in the State Library; placing them in the custody of the Sup1eme Cou1;t authorizing the Judges to make such pmchases of books as they might deem advisable, and to make rules and regulations for the use of the Library. The beginning was a very small one indeed, for the law books so transferred to the custody of the Court were very few; and its present magnitude is a source of gratification to all who have been connected with the Library in the thirty-one years of its existence. This Catalogue contains all books in the Library on May 1, 1898, and the number is esti mated at 30, 000, excluding duplicates and pamphlets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Indiana The production of this work is the result of a belief that there is a field for a new history of Indiana, briefer in general narrative, though fuller in political and constitutional history, than other standard works heretofore published. The word political is of course used in its governmental and not its partisan sense, though every phase of the state's history is treated according to its relative impor tance, the activities of the leading political parties not excepted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Fourth Biennial Report of the Librarian of the Indiana State Library: For the Fiscal Years Ending October 31, 1901 and October 31, 1902 This law, however, is not without defects, but these defects are such as not to seriously impair its usefulness, but such as slight and simple amendments may correct, and I am sure that it would be well to have these errors corrected at the coming session of the General Assembly, lest they may impede the prog ress of many libraries in doing their best work for the people in the State. I shall point out briefly what seem to me to be the defects that could be amended with great advantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding List of the Public Library Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1897 The Board appointed a committee of four to serve with a committee of four appointed by the Woman's Club League, as a permanent library committee. In September, 1894, Mrs. S. C. Hoffman was appointed librarian by the Board of School Trustees. On the evening of January 28, 1895, the Opening of the library was celebrated by a public meeting held in the Council Chamber, Mayor Oak ley presiding. A program of exercises, appropriate to the occasion, was presented, followed by an inspection of the library located in adjacent rooms. The circulating of books began January 29th, at 10 o'clock a. M. The library Opened with volumes on the shelves; of this number, the 117 volumes presented by the Woman's Club League, formed the nucleus to which were added 800 volumes, presented by the Allen County Teachers' Association; volumes, turned over from the public school library; 247 volumes of donated public documents, and volumes, acquired by pur chase. The library now numbers volumes. This does not include the public documents recently acquired by reason of the library having been made a repository for government publications, which, when catalogued and shelved, will become valuable reference books. September, 1895, found the library removed from the City Building to its present quarters on the Southwest Corner of Wayne and Clinton Streets, where, on October 7, 1895, it was again opened to the public. Special mention also should be made of the very valu able and frequent and cheerful service rendered by Mr. J. P. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Biennial Report of the Librarian of the Indiana State Library: For the Fiscal Years Ending October 31, 1905 and October 31, 1906 In justice to himself as well as to the Library, the present libra rian desires to report the activities and lines of progress of the State Library from the beginning of the present biennium to the close of his administration, September 1, 1906, two months before the end of the biennium. This report will not be complete in at least two respects: the activities of the Library to November 1, 1906, belong to this re port and must be later included as a supplement to this. The present incumbent can not make either suggestions for the future policies of the Library, nor can he advise as to its future needs to be supplied by the next General Assembly. As the last General Assembly dealt more generously with the State Library than any former Assembly, we have more to report as accomplished in this than in any former similar period. The lines of activity have been more numerous than formerly and much more than usual has been accomplished in the old lines.
