Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Wolfe Tone Europe, take any care of Tone's papers, and when his son returned to claim them many years after wards, a great part had been lost irrevocably. A few fragments only of the earlier Journals could be found, those of 1793-4 and 5 were gone, as well as most of the other papers entrusted to the careless hands of Reynolds. The loss is very great for it was during those missing years that the seed was sown which was harvested in blood in 1798, it was in those years that the Society of United Irishmen grew from being the debating ground of a few ardent spirits to the closely knit organisation that absorbed all the Virile forces on the national side in Ireland, and Tone, better than any other, could have revealed to us the hidden workings of those fruitful, eventful years had his Journals not had been lost. The letters, now published for the first time, will not make good this loss; only three of them, indeed, belong to the early period, but though they shed little new light upon the political happenings of the time, they are full of the gaiety that made 'ione beloved by his contem poraries, and they will be welcomed by all who have come to know and to love the man who has portrayed himself so wonderfully in the autobiography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of James Wolfe But there are others even amongst his letters to his parents of a different character, letters evincing sound sense, the process of his severe self-discipline, a clear insight into human nature. In the epistles to his friend Rickson and notably in the one to Thomas Townshend, there is further testimony to the truth of Napier's dictum that no example can be shown in our military history of a great general who was not also a well-read man. Book excerpt: Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98) was one of the founders of the Irish Republican national movement, and his political ideas and the circumstances of his life and early death have become powerful political weapons in the hands of later nationalists. Today his name still arouses strong emotions, and he is hailed as the first prophet of an independent Ireland. Tracing Tone's life from his upbringing as a member of the Protestant elite to his exile, trial, and suicide, this new edition of the awardwinning biography brings the book up to date with new scholarship and fresh historical insights.

And, therefore. At present they all prefer to wear wigs. They se tually roll and pin up their own beautiful tresses. So that thev become invisible. And 0\ er them they put a little shock perriwig. Damn their wigs! Iwish they were all burnt. But it is the fashion. And that is a solution for cv ery absurdity. I now perceiw the full import of the ex pression, an armed nation. And I think I know a country. That. For its extent and population. Could produce as many and as fine fellows as France. Well. All in good time. It will be absolute ly necessary to adopt measures similar to those which have raised and cherished this spirit here. If ever God Almighty is pleased. In his gtxnlness. To enable us to shake off our chains. I think Ireland would be formidable as an armed nation. February Went at one o'clock to the Minister's bureau, for my passport. Book excerpt: ARTHUR O'CONNOR was an Irish revolutionary whose historical importance has been vastly underappreciated. He was the most important leader of the United Irishmen, the powerful conspiracy that culminated in the Rebellion of 1798. Although that uprising ended in failure, it was a watershed event in Irish history that left an important legacy of revolutionary precedent for later generations of Irish republicans and nationalists. The conflict in Ireland that persists to the present can be traced in an unbroken line to the war between the British government and the United Irish army in 1798. Although Arthur O'Connor has not become an icon of romantic legend in Ireland, his revolutionary career was full of color, drama, and controversy. He was a skilled conspirator and a charismatic orator who was capable of charming the likes of Charles James Fox, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Many of his allies expected and his rivals feared that O'Connor would have become Bonaparte's anointed king of Ireland if the French had succeeded in driving the British out.

Book excerpt: A celebration of the tenacious life of the enduring Irish classics, this book by one of Irish writing's most eloquent readers offers a brilliant and accessible survey of the greatest works since 1600 in Gaelic and English, which together have shaped one of the world's most original literary cultures. In the course of his discussion of the great seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Gaelic poems of dispossession, and of later work in that language that refuses to die, Declan Kiberd provides vivid and idiomatic translations that bring the Irish texts alive for the English-speaking reader. Extending from the Irish poets who confronted modernity as a cataclysm, and who responded by using traditional forms in novel and radical ways, to the great modern practitioners of such paradoxically conservative and revolutionary writing, Kiberd's work embraces three sorts of Irish classics: those of awesome beauty and internal rigor, such as works by the Gaelic bards, Yeats, Synge, Beckett, and Joyce; those that generate a myth so powerful as to obscure the individual writer and unleash an almost superhuman force, such as the Cuchulain story, the lament for Art O'Laoghaire, and even Dracula; and those whose power exerts a palpable influence on the course of human action, such as Swift's Drapier's Letters, the speeches of Edmund Burke, or the autobiography of Wolfe Tone. The book closes with a moving and daring coda on the Anglo-Irish agreement, claiming that the seeds of such a settlement were sown in the works of Irish literature. A delight to read throughout, Irish Classics is a fitting tribute to the works it reads so well and inspires us to read, and read again.

Book excerpt: Musical Culture and the Spirit of Irish Nationalism is the first comprehensive history of music’s relationship with Irish nationalist politics. Addressing rebel songs, traditional music and dance, national anthems and protest song, the book draws upon an unprecedented volume of material to explore music’s role in cultural and political nationalism in modern Ireland. From the nineteenth-century Young Irelanders, the Fenians, the Home Rule movement, Sinn Féin and the Anglo-Irish War to establishment politics in independent Ireland and civil rights protests in Northern Ireland, this wide-ranging survey considers music’s importance and its limitations across a variety of political movements.

Book excerpt: Or What You Will is an utterly original novel about how stories are brought forth from Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author Jo Walton. He has been too many things to count. He has been a dragon with a boy on his back. He has been a scholar, a warrior, a lover, and a thief. He has been dream and dreamer. He has been a god. But “he” is in fact nothing more than a spark of idea, a character in the mind of Sylvia Harrison, 73, award-winning author of thirty novels over forty years. He has played a part in most of those novels, and in the recesses of her mind, Sylvia has conversed with him for years. But Sylvia won't live forever, any more than any human does. And he's trapped inside her cave of bone, her hollow of skull. When she dies, so will he. Now Sylvia is starting a new novel, a fantasy for adult readers, set in Thalia, the Florence-resembling imaginary city that was the setting for a successful YA trilogy she published decades before. Of course he's got a part in it. But he also has a notion. He thinks he knows how he and Sylvia can step off the wheel of mortality altogether. All he has to do is convince her. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
