Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Catherine of Siena's Dialogue describes the entire spiritual life through a series of conversations between God and the soul, represented by Catherine herself. Readers of The Dialogue of Saint Catherine of Siena, will find her revelations from God as informative - and formative - as those who recognized her sanctity during her life. The universally applicable yet intimately personal messages she received from God are as much for us as they were for Catherine. We can read God's communications to his beloved daughter with detached awe or we can receive His messages to us through her writings. Do you long for certainty that Divine Providence exists in the midst of our chaotic world? Does your prayer seem too dry, or too routine? Have you sought guidance for the challenges of your life from unhelpful people or things? Or has pride kept you from humble obedience to the Church? If so, The Dialogue will provide consolation, encouragement, and hope.

Book excerpt: Although Catherine of Siena was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, relatively little attention has been given to her mystical thought, particularly in the English-speaking world. The Dialogue, the famous compendium of her mature thought, is difficult to understand owing to its interruptions, repetitions, overlapping arguments, imagery and undefined terms. Thomas McDermott breaks new ground in his systematic presentation of Catherine¿s teachings. Drawing on the Dialogue and also on Catherine¿s 381 letters and prayers, he explains clearly her principal teachings in relation to spiritual development, and identifies Catherine¿s possible sources as well as her areas of originality. By examining Catherine¿s life and mystical experiences, McDermott shows how she herself grew spiritually and how her growth corresponds to her later teaching on the ¿three stairs¿ on the ¿bridge of Christ crucified.¿ Finally, the author puts forward what he regards as the fundamental message of Catherine¿s life and teaching. Students of mysticism and spirituality will find this book a trustworthy guide through the incredibly rich mysticism of one of the 14th century¿s most amazing women.

Book excerpt: Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) is widely considered one of the greatest saints of all time. She is best known for her mystical "Dialogue" with God the Father, for which she was declared a Doctor of the Church, but her letters are also unmatched in their spiritual power and profundity. Many people do not know that St Catherine was also a stigmatist, bearing the wounds and suffering the passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. She prayed to God to make the wounds invisible so as not to draw attention to herself. Only her confessor, Blessed Raymond of Capua, knew of her sharing in the sufferings of Our Lord until the day the saint died, when the wounds became visible for all to see. This edition of The Letters of St. Catherine, originally published in 1905 (but now in more modern English in this newly revised and edited version), includes an Introduction on the Life and Times of the Saint, a description of Saint Catherine as Seen in her Letters, the Chief Events in the Life of Saint Catherine, and a Brief Outline of Contemporary Public Events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) has become a defining figure in the history of medieval religion and one of the main exemplars of the "feminine turn" in late medieval religious culture. Despite a hagiographical tradition and historiography that has placed Catherine at a mystic remove from the politics of her day, Catherine's public authority was shaped by politics, both locally in Siena and broadly within late-fourteenth-century contests between the papacy and the Republic of Florence for hegemony in central Italy. In The Saintly Politics of Catherine of Siena, F. Thomas Luongo combines literary-critical readings of Catherine's letters—she was the author of one of the largest collections of medieval letters—with political and social analysis. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, Luongo investigates how Catherine's spiritual authority and sanctity were linked with contemporary political and cultural developments. He shows how the political situation of the church in Italy and a culture that privileged female spirituality and prophetic speech facilitated Catherine's emergence into a public role. The Catherine who emerges from Luongo's well-written pages is a splendid example of what can result when a historian asks fresh questions about a familiar figure's life and brings new materials and methods to bear in formulating answers. The Saintly Politics of Catherine of Siena offers a woman more complex and interesting than the figure portrayed in most contemporary scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Catherine of Siena (1347 - 1380) was an Italian mystic, who was part of the Dominican order. She was canonized in 1461, and is recognized as a Doctor of the Church. She was born in Siena, Italy, and early on wanted to devote herself solely to God as a nun, although this was against the will of her parents. She joined a group of pious women and soon became famous for mystical phenomena, such as an invisible stigmata, and a mystical marriage to Jesus Christ. She would come play a pivotal role in Pope Gregory XI's (d. 1378) decision to move the papacy from Avignon back to Rome. Through her numerous letters sent to princes and cardinals she was able to promote obedience to Pope Urban VI, whom she called the "vessel of the Church." These letters have become famous for providing a window into the spiritual counsel of one of the most celebrated female saints in the Catholic church. This work is a reproduction of "Saint Catherine of Siena as seen in her letters," by Catharine Benincasa, translated by Vida D. Scudder. J.M Dent and Co.: New York: E.P Dutton and Co., 1905. This work has been illustrated with artwork of the saint from the Renaissance period.

Book excerpt: The letters of Catherine Benincasa, commonly known as St. Catherine of Siena, have become an Italian classic yet perhaps the first thing in them to strike a reader is their unliterary character. He only will value them who cares to overhear the impetuous outpourings of the heart and mind of an unlettered daughter of the people, who was also, as it happened, a genius and a saint. Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, the other great writers of the Trecento, are all in one way or another intent on choice expression; Catherine is intent solely on driving home what she has to say. Her letters were talked rather than written. She learned to write only three years before her death, and even after this time was in the habit of dictating her correspondence, sometimes two or three letters at a time, to the noble youths who served her as secretaries.
