Until 1987, there was still a busy stretch of British main line railway where traditional Victorian operating practices were used to control the movements of both express passenger and a variety of freight trains. At the heart of the former Midland Railway main line from St. Pancras to Sheffield, the 45-mile section between Irchester in Northamptonshire and Loughborough in Nottinghamshire was equipped with semaphore signals worked from twenty-three mechanical signalboxes. It was the last main line in the country where this once-standard arrangement remained virtually unchanged since the days of steam. This pocket of mechanical signalling was christened The Leicester Gap, because Leicester was to be the site of a new power signalbox, the last in a chain of just five that would control the whole of the Midland Main Line into the twenty-first century. From 1984 when resignalling work started, to 1987 when it was completed, the author photographed as many trains passing through the Leicester Gap as he could. Book excerpt: While there is an extensive sociological literature concerning race relations, racial discrimination and the process of migration, this has tended to focus on snapshots at a given moment in time. There are few historical accounts of the development of black communities in Britain. This book will be the first social history of a black community in modern times which attempts to weave many aspects of life together to give a more comprehensive understanding of the lives of black people in Britain. The book will address the way peoples’ lives are constructed through racialized identities and how African Caribbean people in Leicester relate to the wider community. It provides an important contribution to the debate concerning the social class profile of different ethnic groups. The work is gendered throughout and discusses the different nature of the experiences of men and women. The 1991 census shows Leicester to have the highest proportion of ethnic minority residents of any city outside London, however compared to other cities with black and Asian communities, it has received little attention from academics. The present study charts the development of Leicester’s African Caribbean community from its origins in the Second World War to 1981 and its changing construction from 'immigrants' to 'ethnic minority'.

Plucked from Irish club Distillery by Nottingham Forest in 1971, the young Irishman went on an incredible football journey that saw him clash against some of the game's biggest characters. He twice won the European cup with Forest under the enigmatic Brian Clough - though the two never saw eye-to-eye. A talented midfielder, O'Neill played for Manchester City in between spells at Norwich before ending his playing career in 1985. As the first Roman Catholic captain of his country, O'Neill marshalled Northern Ireland's golden generation, who battled through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1982, picking up a famous win against hosts Spain on the way. But football was by no means the only path O'Neill could have taken. His has been a life of choice. Opting for football over Gaelic football as a youth, O'Neill was then forced to curtail a law degree at Queens University Belfast to make the switch to England, although his interest in criminology hasn't diminished. O'Neill cut his football management teeth at Grantham Town and Shepshed Dynamo, and his stock grew as he took Wycombe Wanderers from the GM Vauxhall Conference to the old Second Division in a matter of years. Under his tutelage, Leicester City went from under-achieving first division outfit to League Cup winners. However it was at Celtic that O'Neill would enjoy his most trophy-laden years, winning an unprecedented treble in his first year before narrowly missing out on UEFA Cup glory a year later. O'Neill would leave Celtic, his 'spiritual home', to care for his wife Geraldine as she was battling cancer. Returning to football in 2006, O'Neill undertook his first Premier League job, guiding Aston Villa to an impressive 6th place finish in only his second season in charge, and scoring a massive 71 goals in the process - a feat only bettered by Aston Villa's title winning side of 1981. His time at the club came to an adrupt end, however, as O'Neill severed ties with Aston Villa at the start of the 2010-11 season, three months after guiding the club to it's first final in over 10 years.

Book excerpt: Poor and disruptive behaviour in the classroom reduces children's ability to concentrate and absorb information; and it unsettles children and causes immense stress for teachers. Persistent poor behaviour in schools can have far-reaching and damaging consequences for children and can limit their horizons: this is not a problem to be ignored. The Department for Education should collect sample data on all serious incidents in schools, complemented with survey data from teachers, pupils, parents and carers, to allow assessment of the state of behaviour in schools. A good school behaviour policy, agreed and communicated to all staff, governors, pupils, parents and carers, consistently applied, is the basis of an effective approach to managing behaviour. The Committee supports proposals to give clearer emphasis on leading and supporting staff in maintaining and improving standards of behaviour in schools. Schools should also be proactive in establishing relationships with parents and carers on behavioural matters. There are various practical techniques for managing behaviour effectively, but these are poorly disseminated. The forthcoming Green Paper on special educational needs and disability should cover the links between special educational needs and behaviour. The Committee supports the retention of independent appeals panels for exclusions. There are, though, serious concerns over provision of educational psychology services and access to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). The Government should consider passing the responsibility for budgets and commissioning of all children's community health services (including mental health services and speech, language and communications needs specialist services) to local authorities.

Book excerpt: Focusing on a period (c.1577-1594) that is often neglected in Elizabethan theater histories, this study considers Shakespeare's involvement with the various London acting companies before his membership in the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594. Locating Shakespeare in the confusing records of the early London theater scene has long been one of the many unresolved problems in Shakespeare studies and is a key issue in theatre history, Shakespeare biography, and historiography. The aim in this book is to explain, analyze, and assess the competing claims about Shakespeare's pre-1594 acting company affiliations. Schoone-Jongen does not demonstrate that one particular claim is correct but provides a possible framework for Shakespeare's activities in the 1570s and 1580s, an overview of both London and provincial playing, and then offers a detailed analysis of the historical plausibility and probability of the warring claims made by biographers, ranging from the earliest sixteenth-century references to contemporary arguments. Full chapters are devoted to four specific acting companies, their activities, and a summary and critique of the arguments for Shakespeare's involvement in them (The Queen's Men, Strange's Men, Pembroke's Men, and Sussex's Men), a further chapter is dedicated to the proposition Shakespeare's first theatrical involvement was in a recusant Lancashire household, and a final chapter focuses on arguments for Shakespeare's membership in a half dozen other companies (most prominently Leicester's Men). Shakespeare's Companies simultaneously opens up twenty years of theatrical activity to inquiry and investigation while providing a critique of Shakespearean biographers and their historical methodologies.
