Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thematic Guide Through the Music of Parsifal: With a Preface Upon the Legendary Material of the Wagnerian Drama Because the dramas of Richard Wagner dealt with early Germanic or mediaeval legends, critics generally have committed the mistake of judging them according to the standard of the existing old German poems upon which these legends were founded. For "Tristan," they have cited the Epic of Gottfried von Strassfeurg; for the "Ring of the Nibelungen," the Nibelungenlieder. Those, who perceived that Wagner's Nibelungen poetry had little in common with the Nibelungenlieder brought forward instead, the Edda-Lieder, and treated the new drama as a dramatized form of these old Skaldic poems; thus our poet has been reproached for leaving German soil in order to bring his subject matter from a foreign land. This is incorrect and very foolish. Wagner's subject matter is much older than these confused, fragmentary, Skaldic settings of old beliefs and legendary recollections; not to speak of the epic arrangements of the 13th century. Their characteristic features were first brought to Europe by Aryan races from Asia, and since then with constant changes and condensations have passed into the possession of the Germanic races, especially the German people. The Eddalieder, in so far as they treat of the Siegfried legend, are German, but outside of this they are Celtic-French, as are also Tristan and Parsifal, whose hidden subject matter, so universally human, was first brought to its full ethical realization by German poetry, and thus became the possession of the German people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parsifal: A Mystical Drama by Richard Wagner Retold in the Spirit of the Bayreuth Interpretation The legend of the Grail, as Wagner uses it, has in it the usual accompaniments of mediaeval tradition, something of paganism and magic. But these pagan elements are only contrasts to the purity and splendor of the simple Chris tian truth portrayed. The drama suggests the early miracle and mystery plays of the Christian Church; but more nearly, perhaps, it reminds one of those great religious dramas, scenic and musical, which were given at night at Eleusis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parsifal (or Sir Percival) was a Knight of King Arthur. His story is told by the troubadours of France and Germany, notably Chrétien de Troyes and Wolfram von Eschenbach. The Parsifal story stands between the past age that looked for secrets of the spirit and the coming age that was going to search for the secrets of matter. In this engaging retelling of the legend of Parsifal, Charles Kovacs's critical commentary offers Steiner-Waldorf educators an unrivalled insight into teaching the story of Parsifal and will aid in lesson planning. Based on Kovacs's extensive teachers' notes, this informative book places the Parsifal story in its greater social and historical context. In the Steiner-Waldorf Education curriculum this story is recommended for Class 11 (age 16-17) as a way of introducing world literature and one of the central problems of our time -- the imperative to learn to ask the right questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Kinderman's detailed study of Parsifal, described by the composer as his "last card," explores the evolution of the text and music of this inexhaustible yet highly controversial music drama across Wagner's entire career, and offers a reassessment of the ideological and political history of Parsifal, shedding new light on the connection of Wagner's legacy to the rise of National Socialism in Germany. The compositional genesis is traced through many unfamiliar manuscript sources, revealing unsuspected models and veiled connections to Wagner's earlier works. Fresh analytic perspectives are revealed, casting the dramatic meaning of Parsifal in a new light. Much debated aspects of the work, such as Kundry's death at the conclusion, are discussed in the context of its stage history. Path-breaking as well is Kinderman's analysis of the religious and ideological context of Parsifal. During the half-century after the composer's death, the Wagner family and the so-called Bayreuth circle sought to exploit Wagner's work for political purposes, thereby promoting racial nationalism and anti-Semitism. Hitherto unnoticed connections between Hitler and Wagner's legacy at Bayreuth are explored here, while differences between the composer's politics as an 1849 revolutionary and the later response of his family to National Socialism are weighed in a nuanced account. Kinderman combines new historical research, sensitive aesthetic criticism, and probing philosophical reflection in this most intensive examination of Wagner's culminating music drama.

This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Paul Bishop investigates the extent to which analytical psychology draws on concepts found in German classical aesthetics. It aims to place analytical psychology in the German-speaking tradition of Goethe and Schiller, with which Jung was well acquainted. Analytical Psychology and German Classical Aesthetics argues that analytical psychology appropriates many of its central notions from German classical aesthetics, and that, when seen in its intellectual historical context, the true originality of analytical psychology lies in its reformulation of key tenets of German classicism. Although the importance for Jung of German thought in general, and of Goethe and Schiller in particular, has frequently been acknowledged, until now it has never been examined in any detailed or systematic way. Through an analysis of Jung’s reception of Goethe and Schiller, Analytical Psychology and German Classical Aesthetics demonstrates the intellectual continuity within analytical psychology and the filiation of ideas from German classical aesthetics to Jungian thought. In this way it suggests that a rereading of analytical psychology in the light of German classical aesthetics offers an intellectually coherent understanding of analytical psychology. By uncovering the philosophical sources of analytical psychology, this first volume returns Jung’s thought to its core intellectual tradition, in the light of which analytical psychology gains new critical impact and fresh relevance for modern thought. Written in a scholarly yet accessible style, this book will interest students and scholars alike in the areas of analytical psychology, comparative literature, and the history of ideas.

Book excerpt: Parsifal was Richard Wagner's last opera, and many consider it his most beautiful and moving work. Peter Bassett, author of the highly successful A RING FOR THE MILLENNIUM, has made a special study of Parsifal, looking particularly at the relationship between Wagner's sources and his text and identifying important thematic connections with other works, notably DER RING DES NIBELUNG. This guide - which includes a translation of the libretto - will be invaluable to those new to Parsifal, but will also provide fresh insights for readers who are already familiar with Wagner's final work. This new edition is illustrated with historical photographs and a new format.
