With whome there marcht a troope of Englishe traine, Whose forward mindes, not bridled by mistrust, But pricked forth for honour or for gaine, Headlong themselves to thousand perills thrust. There three of us did serve in royall band: The fourth did waite upon Northumberland. 41. And, when our camp to pitch their tents was bent. The rattling shott did flye about our eares. The bullets thick, as messengers, were sent, To plant within our hearts some flying feares. They ply'd it hard. For why? the French blood rose That in despight we lodg'd so neare their nose. 42. Our armie, first, was forced to defende The painfull pioneers, who trenches made; Which once dispacht, a double gain did lende: A sheild from foes, and from the sun a shade. Next after that a mount was rais'd in haste Where all the greatest ordinance was plac'd. 43. Loe! then the batterie begann with speed! On either side was sending still of shott, Noe sparing one another's blood to sheede, While warr dothe laste, or skirmishes be hott. Few Frenchmen peep'd or lookt us in the face But felt our shaftes let flying strait apace. 44. John Dudley, afterwards Duke of Northumberland, but then only Viscount Lisle. As fish for water, soe they gap'd for aide: But all reliefe, by force of foes, was stayde. 45. Book Synopsis Catholic Gentry in English Society by : Geoffrey Scott
Download or read book Catholic Gentry in English Society written by Geoffrey Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume advances scholarly understanding of English Catholicism in the early modern period through a series of interlocking essays on single family: the Throckmortons of Coughton Court, Warwickshire, whose experience over several centuries encapsulates key themes in the history of the Catholic gentry. Despite their persistent adherence to Catholicism, in no sense did the Throckmortons inhabit a 'recusant bubble'. Family members regularly played leading roles on the national political stage, from Sir George Throckmorton's resistance to the break with Rome in the 1530s, to Sir Robert George Throckmorton's election as the first English Catholic MP in 1831. Taking a long-term approach, the volume charts the strategies employed by various members of the family to allow them to remain politically active and socially influential within a solidly Protestant nation. In so doing, it contributes to ongoing attempts to integrate the study of Catholicism into the mainstream of English social and political history, transcending its traditional status as a 'special interest' category, remote from or subordinate to the central narratives of historical change. It will be particularly welcomed by historians of the sixteenth through to the nineteenth century, who increasingly recognise the importance of both Catholicism and anti-Catholicism as central themes in English cultural and political life.
Book Synopsis The Tudor Law of Treason (Routledge Revivals) by : John Bellamy
Download or read book The Tudor Law of Treason (Routledge Revivals) written by John Bellamy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1979, was ground-breaking in its exploration of the understudied area of the Tudor law of treason. Bellamy first examines the scope of that law, noting the inheritance from the Middle Ages, the effectiveness of the new statutes and interpretation of the law by the judiciary. Mining the archives for official, legal and literary accounts, the following parts consider how the government came to hear of traitors, the use of evidence and witnesses in trials and finally the fate of the traitor at the gallows and beyond. This is a full, useful and interesting title, which will be of great value to students researching Tudor and late medieval statute law, the Tudor concept of treason and the mores of Tudor society.

Book Synopsis The Life of Edward Seymour by : Margaret Scard
Download or read book The Life of Edward Seymour written by Margaret Scard and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1547 Henry VIII lay dying. His heir was just 9 years old and all England waited expectantly to see who would hold the reins of power until Edward VI came of age. Within days of Henry's death, the privy council overturned the terms of his will and Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset was named Lord Protector. It was a decision that the men in power would come to regret. For nearly three years, Somerset was 'king in all but name', the most powerful man in England. But though he was a skilled soldier and leader on the battlefield, Somerset's political skills were not so well-honed. His single-mindedness and his overbearing attitude towards the privy Councillors alienated the very men whose support he most needed. When they lost patience with him, the scene was set for conflict. Despite energetic opposition, his religious reform was his greatest success and the establishment of the Book of Common Prayer, which laid the foundation of the Anglican Church, was to be his most enduring achievement. However, his efforts to lessen the authoritarian rule imposed by Henry VIII and to improve the well-being of the common folk led to widespread rebellion, and as his attempt to subdue the Scots failed, England faced war with France. To the people Edward Seymour was the 'Good Duke'. To his fellow Councillors he was a traitor. This is a story of Tudor ambition, power and the ultimate price of failure.
Book Synopsis The Children of Henry VIII by : Alison Weir
Download or read book The Children of Henry VIII written by Alison Weir and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fascinating . . . Alison Weir does full justice to the subject.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer At his death in 1547, King Henry VIII left four heirs to the English throne: his only son, the nine-year-old Prince Edward; the Lady Mary, the adult daughter of his first wife Katherine of Aragon; the Lady Elizabeth, the teenage daughter of his second wife Anne Boleyn; and his young great-niece, the Lady Jane Grey. In this riveting account Alison Weir paints a unique portrait of these extraordinary rulers, examining their intricate relationships to each other and to history. She traces the tumult that followed Henry's death, from the brief intrigue-filled reigns of the boy king Edward VI and the fragile Lady Jane Grey, to the savagery of "Bloody Mary," and finally the accession of the politically adroit Elizabeth I. As always, Weir offers a fresh perspective on a period that has spawned many of the most enduring myths in English history, combining the best of the historian's and the biographer's art. “Like anthropology, history and biography can demonstrate unfamiliar ways of feeling and being. Alison Weir's sympathetic collective biography, The Children of Henry VIII does just that, reminding us that human nature has changed--and for the better. . . . Weir imparts movement and coherence while re-creating the suspense her characters endured and the suffering they inflicted.”—The New York Times Book Review
Book Synopsis The Wives of Henry VIII by : Antonia Fraser
Download or read book The Wives of Henry VIII written by Antonia Fraser and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling history of the legendary six wives of Henry VIII--from the acclaimed author of Marie Antoinette. Under Antonia Fraser's intent scrutiny, Catherine of Aragon emerges as a scholar-queen who steadfastly refused to grant a divorce to her royal husband; Anne Boleyn is absolved of everything but a sharp tongue and an inability to produce a male heir; and Catherine Parr is revealed as a religious reformer with the good sense to tack with the treacherous winds of the Tudor court. And we gain fresh understanding of Jane Seymour's circumspect wisdom, the touching dignity of Anna of Cleves, and the youthful naivete that led to Katherine Howard's fatal indiscretions. The Wives of Henry VIII interweaves passion and power, personality and politics, into a superb work of history.
