Book excerpt: “THE LEGEND OF INARA WALI” In the sacred annals of societal evolution, there exists a tome of profound significance—a testament to the transformative power of human endeavour and the enduring spirit of resilience and compassion. This book, a luminous beacon amidst the shadows of adversity, chronicles the remarkable journey of Sujata CDO, a luminary whose name has become synonymous with the principles of education, justice, equal opportunity, and human dignity. Within its pages, the narrative unfolds with the lyrical cadence of a timeless epic, weaving together the threads of Sujata's unwavering dedication and tireless advocacy. Through the prism of her experiences, we are invited to traverse the landscape of social change, to witness the indomitable spirit of humanity in its quest for enlightenment and liberation. At its core, this book is a philosophical treatise—a profound meditation on the nature of leadership, justice, and the inherent worth of every individual. Through Sujata's journey, we are reminded that true greatness lies not in the pursuit of personal glory, but in the service of others; not in the accumulation of wealth or power, but in the upliftment of the marginalized and the oppressed. As we turn the pages, we are enveloped in a tapestry of wisdom and insight, each word a resplendent gem illuminating the path toward a more just and equitable society. From the hallowed halls of education to the corridors of justice, Sujata's influence reverberates, inspiring all who encounter her story to strive for a world where opportunity knows no bounds and dignity is the birthright of all. But this book is more than a mere chronicle of events—it is a call to action, a clarion call to each of us to rise to our highest potential and become agents of change in our own right. For in the words of Sujata herself, "True progress is not measured by the heights we reach, but by the depth of our compassion and the breadth of our empathy." In honouring Sujata and her extraordinary legacy, we honour the very essence of our shared humanity—the belief that each of us, regardless of our background or circumstance, has the power to make a difference in the world. May this book serve as a testament to the enduring power of hope, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative potential of love and solidarity. In the realm of literature, this journey finds its echo in the stories we tell, the tales we weave with words. As an author, I am but a humble bard, seeking to capture the essence of this journey in the pages of my works. Through prose and poetry, I strive to shine a light on the triumphs and tribulations of those who dare to defy the odds, who dare to dream of a world where education knows no boundaries. For in the end, it is not the accolades or the acclaim that define our success as authors, but rather the impact we leave on the hearts and minds of those who read our words. And if, in some small measure, my writings can inspire even a single soul to embrace the transformative power of education, then I shall consider my pen truly blessed. Prashant Kumar Lal Author

Book excerpt: In this witty and exuberant collection of feminist retellings of traditional Japanese folktales, humans live side by side with spirits who provide a variety of useful services--from truth-telling to babysitting, from protecting castles to fighting crime. A busybody aunt who disapproves of hair removal; a pair of door-to-door saleswomen hawking portable lanterns; a cheerful lover who visits every night to take a luxurious bath; a silent house-caller who babysits and cleans while a single mother is out working. Where the Wild Ladies Are is populated by these and many other spirited women—who also happen to be ghosts. This is a realm in which jealousy, stubbornness, and other excessive “feminine” passions are not to be feared or suppressed, but rather cultivated; and, chances are, a man named Mr. Tei will notice your talents and recruit you, dead or alive (preferably dead), to join his mysterious company. In this witty and exuberant collection of linked stories, Aoko Matsuda takes the rich, millenia-old tradition of Japanese folktales—shapeshifting wives and foxes, magical trees and wells—and wholly reinvents them, presenting a world in which humans are consoled, guided, challenged, and transformed by the only sometimes visible forces that surround them.

Book excerpt: Life is going according to plan for young Jared Hernandez. School, friends, his first job, his first love. What lies beneath the usual drama is something beyond Jared’s wildest dreams, and he discovers a world where demons, vampires, werewolves, gods and goddesses blend into the everyday. Where magic becomes a reality. Where love is a force stronger than any other. Long before the birth of humanity, the Founding Magic was created. Chaos, order and time came together to form the supernatural, ushering a lavish age of myth where gods and goddesses reigned. With the human soul, however, came great power. To restore the delicate balance, the Distinction of Realms was enacted to mask magic from humanity. Jared must now walk that balance if he is to survive.

Book excerpt: Carl Strehlow's comparative dictionary manuscript is a unique item of Australian cultural heritage; it is a large collection of circa 7,600 Aranda, 6,800 Loritja (Luritja) and 1,200 Dieri to German entries compiled at the beginning of the twentieth century at the Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia. It is an integral part of Strehlow's ethnographic work on Aboriginal cultures that his German editor Baron Moritz von Leonhardi published as Die Aranda- und Loritja-Stämme in Zentral-Australien (Strehlow 1907-1920) in Frankfurt. Strehlow and his editor had planned to publish a language study that included this comparative dictionary, but it remained unpublished until now due to a number of complicated historical and personal circumstances of the main characters involved with the dictionary. Strehlow's linguistic work is historically and anthropologically significant because it probably represents the largest and most comprehensive wordlist of Indigenous languages compiled in Australia during the early stages of contact. It is an important primary source for Luritja and Aranda speakers. Both languages are spoken in homes and taught in schools in central Australia. The reasons for presenting this work as a heritage dictionary-that is, as an exact transcription of the original form of the handwritten manuscript-are to follow the Western Aranda people's wishes and to maintain its historical authenticity, which will prove to be of great use to both Indigenous people and scholars interested in language.

Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. The second part of the book explores how forces of globalisation have impacted upon the local and, linguistically surprisingly, rather homogeneous cultural productions of Indonesia. The main strands of inquiry in this second section are topics of global trends in religion, responses to urban development, the impact of popular literary developments, and how traditions are revisited in order to come to terms with international cultural developments.

Book excerpt: Hidden Sorcery While the Tremere have potent magic at their command, Hermetic tradition isn't the only source of mystic power. The ancient ways of Egyptian magic, the Sufic trances of the Middle East, sacrificial Hindu rites and the natural magic of Caribbean craft can all be used to affect the Final Nights. But what are these thaumaturgies capable of? Or Abandoned Witchcraft? Expanded information on non-traditional Thaumaturgy comprises Blood Sacrifice. This book includes four new styles of the Discipline, as well as paths and rituals for each. It also looks into the rare but unforgettable magical "anomalies" that populate Vampire's World of Darkness "RM," those strange mystic artifacts that just seem to happen.
