Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief reviews the past, present, and future use of school corporal punishment in the United States, a practice that remains legal in 19 states as it is constitutionally permitted according to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result of school corporal punishment, nearly 200,000 children are paddled in schools each year. Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. It concludes by discussing potential legal, policy, and advocacy avenues for abolition of school corporal punishment at the state and federal levels as well as summarizing how school corporal punishment is being used and what its potential implications are for thousands of individual students and for the society at large. As school corporal punishment becomes more and more regulated at the state level, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools serves an essential guide for policymakers and advocates across the country as well as for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students.

Book excerpt: The way we exist in society defines our place in its social structures and reaffirms our belonging, identity, and dignity. Europe is a continent characterized by many internal conflicts and ongoing struggles inside societies. The battlefield is society itself, where state law clashes with ethnic law over the very identity of society. Exploring debates from Scandinavia to Spain about the religious and political autonomy and freedom, this book explains that the violation of the rights of ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples, such as the Sami and Basque peoples, remains a problem in Europe. In addition to these political conflicts, Magdalena Butrymowicz analyzes the legal and religious culture within minority ethnic structures themselves. Ultimately, this book raises timely questions about the balance between state control and legal autonomy for ethnic minorities across Europe advocating for a new definition of ethnic law as the right of ethnic minorities, creating their legal and ethnic identity. The book will interest anyone exploring the dynamic between European states and the ethnic minorities that live in them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published: Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1940. viii, 436 pp. This was the first comprehensive treatise on the legal status of the African-American as interpreted by United States courts in cases involving civil rights and citizenship. Some of the topics examined in this work are land ownership, involuntary servitude, segregation, failure to provide accommodations in charitable and penal institutions, interracial marriage, illegitimate offspring and adoption, as well as consideration of such factors as mob domination at trials of African-Americans, race discrimination in jury selection, racial prejudice of jurors, the voting franchise during reconstruction and its aftermath and attempts to keep African-Americans away from the polls. While lacking a table of cases per se, the treatise is well-annotated with citations to relevant cases, and includes a bibliography and index. Charles S. Mangum, Jr. [1902-1980] was a Research Fellow at the University of North Carolina. His other notable work is The Legal Status of the Tenant Farmer in the Southeast (1952). "An enormous compendium of cases, it is a product of sound and painstaking scholarship, brilliant in design, thorough in execution, and deft in style." -Jerome H. Springarn, Columbia Law Review (1940) 40:1118. "It is the first comprehensive collection of legal materials in its field." Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection of New York University (1953) 334.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US education is in crisis. This history and analysis of the education system is an essential primer for parents, teachers, and school administrators, as well as parentteacher organizations, education majors, education administration majors, the media, politicians, and everyone who wants to see American schools do a better job.The author considers the genesis of public schools in the United States, various aspects of public education systems from elementary school through university, trends in education and reform, and issues that still need to be addressed. The book contains information about public and private organizations, think tanks, institutions, and governmental bodies involved in public education reform. The book shows the deficiency of the existing education system and compares it to more efficient systems. The author shows that most of the existing approaches to improve education are based on the same foolish idea that as long as government spending on education is great enough, the improvement will follow. The bond between education and politics hinders progress in education. The problems facing schools as well as the recommended solutions are considered. The author cites multiple research attempts to improve the functioning of the existing education system that have still failed to bring any tangible results. He uses his specialized knowledge to explain what should be done for educational progress to become reality.
