This is followed by a general discussion where appear the arguments in favor of a league of nations, the objections to it and the difficulties that lie in the way of its realization. A selected bibliography is in cluded for the convenience of any who may wish to pursue the subject beyond the limits of this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A League of Nations: What Are We Fighting For?; Democracy Vs; Autocracy "A League of Nations," as set forth in the following pages, is a simple working plan whereby the peoples of the world can realize what is now almost universally recognized as the only real guaranty of permanent peace between nations. This, of course, is in that province of statecraft which we may call internationalism. But if the war settlement results only in establishing permanent peace between nations we may find that there is little improvement, or none at all, in the condition of the mass of humanity. To improve international relations without improving international conditions might prove a step backward by giving oppressive governments a sense of security against interference. Had a cohesive League of Nations been formed ten or fifteen years ago it is probable the Hohenzollem autocracy would have been guaranteed permanence for centuries to come. "What Are We Fighting For?" deals with this international diplomacy, which must be complemental to "A League of Nations" unless we are content to look forward to conditions in other nations such as have prevailed in Russia the past year; unless the victory (now seemingly near at hand) is to prove a sore disappointment to the millions of heroic men and women who have made it possible. "Democracy vs. Autocracy" deals with the fundamentals of these opposing principles, and shows how autocracy works its sinister designs in the disguise of political democratic forms. Except "A League of Nations," this booklet is an abbreviated epitome of a comprehensive system of economic philosophy now almost complete. The system is partially set forth in my book, "Natural Money, The Peaceful Solution" (Bankers Publishing Co., New York). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from League of Nations: An Alliance? Or a Nation of Nations? The Pioneer plan for a league of nations to be organized at the end of the world war, so as to make another such war impossible or improbable, was fully prepared on August 10, 1914, ten days after the great world war began. That plan is described herein in detail and contrasted with other plans. It was mailed to President Wilson August 18, 1914. It was referred by the White House to the Department of State, according to the letter of the Secretary of State to the author, dated September 17, 1914. In October, 1914, it was made public. The volume Nation of Nations, elaborating the plan with a tentative draft of a Supreme Constitution for the suggested international government and police power, was published just after June 17, 1915, when the League to Enforce Peace was organized at Philadelphia to promote a league of nations of an entirely different character, a world treaty alliance, as herein shown. Both plans are described and contrasted in that book, and in this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Policy in War Time and After: A Study of the Application of Democratic Ideas to International Commercial Relations My aim in writing this book has not been to consider the temporary changes in industry and trade resulting from the war, nor primarily the problems of the immediate future, such as feeding starving peoples and restoring devastated areas. Although fully conscious of the importance of these questions, I have sought rather in the following pages to emphasize the permanent changes caused by the war and to discuss questions which for many years will rise for decision before the peoples of the world. In this book I have considered only those aspects of the work of reconstruction that have to do with commercial policy in war time and after. In Part I are reviewed the diversifying and modifying influences of the war on American and foreign industrial conditions. In Part II are discussed our national commercial problems - the tariff, anti-dumping legislation, methods for preventing discriminations against our national interests, and methods for promoting, controlling, and democratizing American commercial activities abroad. Finally, Part III deals with world affairs and surveys unfair trade practices between nations and their regulation, the permanent lessons of the war in the control of the production and distribution of food and raw materials, reciprocity treaties, preferential tariff arrangements, the policy of the "open door," colonies, foreign investments and concessions, and the League of Nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy Versus Autocracy: A Comparative Study of Governments in the World War When President Wilson gave expression to the now famous phrase, We are fighting to make the world safe for democracy, he uttered a profound truth. He saw in the conflict in which America is engaged in association with the Allies, a struggle between two political ideals; these two ideals, when expressed in form and practice of government, are in their nature either monarchic or democratic. The one ideal is accepted by Germany; the other by the United States; the one means a government imposed from above; the other a government by the consent of the governed; the one means an irresponsible autocracy; the other a government responsible to the people a democracy.
