Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this moving account, “America’s Superintendent” John Kuhn lays bare the scare tactics at the root of the modern school “reform” movement. Kuhn conveys a deeply held passion for the mission and promise of public education through his own experience as a school administrator in Texas. When his “Alamo Letter” first appeared in the Washington Post, it galvanized the educational community in a call to action that was impossible to ignore. This powerful book requires us to question whether the current education crisis will be judged by history as a legitimate national emergency or an agenda-driven panic, spurred on by a media that is, for the most part, uninterested in anything but useless soundbites. Essential reading for teachers, administrators, policymakers, and everyone concerned with public education, Fear and Learning in America: Analyzes school reform from the perspective of a practicing school administrator who isn’t sold on the corporate reform package.Places school reform in the historical context of similar episodes of national hand-wringing.Offers encouragement and appreciation to classroom teachers who are exhausted by the vilification that modern school reform has served up. “John Kuhn’s book is packed with more wisdom than any 10 books that I have read about American education. It is the wisdom born of experience. It is the wisdom of a man who cares about children, families, and community.” —From the Foreword by Diane Ravitch, author of Reign of Error “In Fear and Learning in America, John Kuhn weaves together stories from his life as a teacher and missionary with tales from history. The result is a fresh way of thinking about schools and educational policy. Refuting A Nation at Risk, Mr. Kuhn warns, persuasively, of ‘a rising tide of inequality.’ His message, artfully delivered in this important book, should be heeded.” —John Merrow, education correspondent, PBS NewsHour, and president, Learning Matters, Inc. “Kuhn is a superb educator and his valuable book effectively dissects the myths about today’s high-stakes testing environment and the worsening conditions under which educators are expected to make miracles every day, or else. His cogent arguments against such policies demonstrate what is really important and should inform the debate about public education.” —Randi Weingarten, president, American Federation of Teachers “This book is a brilliantly clear defense of public education as our nation’s most valuable asset. John Kuhn fearlessly names the fact that today’s education reformers, like the renowned emperor, wear no clothes.” —Christine Sleeter, professor emerita, California State University Monterey Bay

Book excerpt: One pervasive educational issue is the national underrepresentation of Black and Hispanic students in gifted education. Virtually every school district is grappling with having too few students from these groups identified as gifted and served in gifted classes and programs. Recruiting and Retaining Culturally Different Students in Gifted Education addresses this long-standing national problem through the dual lens of recruitment and retention. The focus is on how to equitably recruit (screen, refer, and/or assess) culturally different students and, just as importantly, to retain them. Recruitment and retention require providing academic, cultural, and social supports to culturally different students and ensuring that educators are willing and able to address issues and barriers. No time is better than now to address and correct the underachievement albatross, and the focus on recruitment and retention holds the greatest promise. Nominated for a 2014 NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Literary Work-Instructional Category

Book excerpt: Profiles are presented of six superior educators whose students achieved an excellence far beyond what might be expected of them. The subjects were a speech and drama teacher, a girls' basketball coach, a choral music teacher, an art teacher, and principals of an elementary and a secondary school. The major finding of the study was that, without exception, these leaders gave a high number of correctives. Any deviations, even minor ones, from their high standards were corrected quickly, and not infrequently very sharply. Other significant findings were: (1) they were purposive, demanding perfectionists; (2) they had a sense of humor and tended toward self-deprecation; (3) they gave only a limited amount of praise; (4) they stressed self-discipline, responsibility, and always doing one's best; (5) they attained a high amount of time on task; and (6) they were very family oriented. Comparisons are made between the characteristics of these educators and leaders in the business world. Recommendations are made for teacher and administrator education. (JD)

Book excerpt: From the #1 bestselling author of Heat, Travel Team and Million-Dollar Throw comes a story of every football kid’s dream come true. 12-year-old Charlie is a fantasy football guru. He may be just a bench warmer for his school's football team, but when it comes to knowing and loving the game, he's first-string. He even becomes a celebrity when his podcast gets noticed by a sports radio host, who plays Charlie's fantasy picks for all of Los Angeles to hear. Soon Charlie befriends the elderly owner of the L.A. Bulldogs -- a fictional NFL team -- and convinces him to take a chance on an aging quarterback. After that, watch out . . . it's press conferences and national fame as Charlie becomes a media curiosity and source of conflict for the Bulldogs general manager, whose job Charlie seems to have taken. It's all a bit much for a kid just trying to stay on top of his grades and maintain his friendship with his verbal sparring partner, Anna. Like the best Disney film in book form, like Moneyball for kids, Fantasy League is every football kid's dream scenario. Praise for FANTASY LEAGUE: * "This Moneyball story with kids is on the money."–Booklist, starred review "The feel good book of the year."–VOYA “Readers will be alternately cheering and reaching for a tissue during the final playoff-deciding game for the Bulldogs. This will be devoured by young football fans.”–School Library Journal

Book excerpt: This book offers practical approaches to some of the key issues and challenges involved in teaching nineteenth-century fiction at the university level, and includes annotated case studies from courses, discussions of instances of useful practice in teaching and a helpful chronology nineteenth-century writers and texts. This new volume in the Teaching the New English series looks at how a core area of the English degree curriculum--Victorian fiction--can be taught, and issues facing lecturers and students in the field today. The book has a pedagogical slant, though chapters will also be useful for students of Vitorian fiction as an overview of current debate.
