Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gatherings in Diaspora brings together the latest chapters in the long-running chronicle of religion and immigration in the American experience. Today, as in the past, people migrating to the United States bring their religions with them, and their religious identities often mean more to them away from home, in their diaspora, than they did before. This book explores and analyzes the diverse religious communities of post-1965 diasporas: Christians, Hews, Muslims, Hindus, Rastafarians, and practitioners of Vodou, from countries such as China, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Iran, Jamaica, Korea, and Mexico. The contributors explore how, to a greater or lesser extent, immigrants and their offspring adapt their religious institutions to American conditions, often interacting with religious communities already established. The religious institutions they build, adapt, remodel, and adopt become worlds unto themselves, congregations, where new relations are forged within the community -- between men and women, parents and children, recent arrival and those longer settled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis D. León's compelling, innovative exploration of religion in the U.S.-Mexican borderlands issues a fundamental challenge to current scholarship in the field and recharts the landscape of Chicano faith. La Llorona's Children constructs genealogies of the major traditions spanning Mexico City, East Los Angeles, and the southwestern United States: Guadalupe devotion, curanderismo, espiritualismo, and evangelical/ Pentecostal traditions. León theorizes a religious poetics that functions as an effective and subversive survival tactic akin to crossing the U.S.-Mexican border. He claims that, when examined in terms of broad categorical religious forms and intentions, these traditions are remarkably alike and resonate religious ideas and practices developed in the ancient Mesoamerican world. León proposes what he calls a borderlands reading of La Virgen de Guadalupe as a transgressive, border-crossing goddess in her own right, a mestiza deity who displaces Jesus and God for believers on both sides of the border. His energetic discussion of curanderismo shows how this indigenous religious practice links cognition and sensation in a fresh and powerful technology of the body—one where sensual, erotic, and sexualized ways of knowing emphasize personal and communal healing. La Llorona’s Children ends with a fascinating study of the rich and complex world of Chicano/a Pentecostalism in Los Angeles, a tradition that León maintains allows Chicano men to reimagine their bodies into a unified social body through ritual performance. Throughout the narrative, the connections among sacred spaces, saints, healers, writers, ideas, and movements are woven with skill, inspiration, and insight.

Book excerpt: For those who live there, Earth is both paradise and prison, a place for people to live out their lives with no hope of leaving or knowledge of what exists beyond this world. Then on one otherwise uneventful day, two odd-looking men from another planet suddenly appear with an offer the citizens of Earth can't refuse: the power to travel into the unexplored frontiers of the universe. But first, the Earthlings must prove they can bring peace to their world and show love for their fellow man. At first, Earth's inhabitants are skeptical of their new friends but soon realize the magnitude of the gift these aliens have offered. They are given five years to end their wars and create an atmosphere of peace and social harmony needed to impress the union of worlds. While the world is filled with excitement, the Reverend Jimmy Jordan questions his faith in God, which leaves no room for the existence of life beyond Earth. He studies the Bible in earnest to strengthen his beliefs, and he discovers a startling secret concerning Earth's new friends, one that could have dire consequences for the planet and the people living on it.

Book excerpt: A number of potentially devastating crises are converging upon planet earth early in the twenty-first century. All of these crises have significant prophetic implications and could have catastrophic consequences for human civilization. This is the warning presented by Jerry Duke in The Generation of Crisis. This is undoubtedly one of the most detailed accounts available concerning the converging political, environmental, and spiritual events which will distinguish the "last days." The catastrophic consequences which these crises could have on human civilization are chillingly presented and thoroughly substantiated with extensive documentation. What will be the effect of these crises on humanity? How are these events connected to bible prophecy? Could these crises mark the end of the age and point to the second coming of Christ? These questions are convincingly answered with frightening clarity. The evidence is so overwhelming that it is impossible to ignore. The Generation of Crisis is definitely a wakeup call for our generation. Jerry Duke has over forty years of combined experience in theological studies and specialized research. His theological experience includes not only his studies at Texas Bible College in Houston, Texas, but also over ten years of experience as an itinerant evangelist and subsequently as the senior pastor of churches in Pueblo, Colorado, and Danville, Kentucky. His experience in specialized research has been acquired during a twenty year law enforcement career. Duke specializes in criminal investigations and has supervised numerous investigative units including General Investigations, Special Investigations, and Internal Affairs. He currently holds the rank of lieutenant and serves as a bureau commander with the Bullhead City Police Department in Bullhead City, Arizona. He is married and lives in Fort Mohave, Arizona, with his wife Lisa. He has two daughters, Krystal and Epris, along with three stepsons, Aaron, Justin, and Ryan.

When the author brings us to Lazarus' tomb to witness Jesus' command to 'come forth', it is as if Jesus is giving readers the command and permission to 'come forth' from calamity, heartaches or circumstances which have prevented us from wholehearted living--to come out of our own tombs of darkness"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utopian Generations develops a powerful interpretive matrix for understanding world literature--one that renders modernism and postcolonial African literature comprehensible in a single framework, within which neither will ever look the same. African literature has commonly been seen as representationally naïve vis-à-vis modernism, and canonical modernism as reactionary vis-à-vis postcolonial literature. What brings these two bodies of work together, argues Nicholas Brown, is their disposition toward Utopia or "the horizon of a radical reconfiguration of social relations.? Grounded in a profound rethinking of the Hegelian Marxist tradition, this fluently written book takes as its point of departure the partial displacement during the twentieth century of capitalism's "internal limit" (classically conceived as the conflict between labor and capital) onto a geographic division of labor and wealth. Dispensing with whole genres of commonplace contemporary pieties, Brown examines works from both sides of this division to create a dialectical mapping of different modes of Utopian aesthetic practice. The theory of world literature developed in the introduction grounds the subtle and powerful readings at the heart of the book--focusing on works by James Joyce, Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Ford Madox Ford, Chinua Achebe, Wyndham Lewis, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, and Pepetela. A final chapter, arguing that this literary dialectic has reached a point of exhaustion, suggests that a radically reconceived notion of musical practice may be required to discern the Utopian desire immanent in the products of contemporary culture.
