Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Newton’s Gravity” conveys the power of simple mathematics to tell the fundamental truth about nature. Many people, for example, know the tides are caused by the pull of the Moon and to a lesser extent the Sun. But very few can explain exactly how and why that happens. Fewer still can calculate the actual pulls of the Moon and Sun on the oceans. This book shows in clear detail how to do this with simple tools. It uniquely crosses disciplines – history, astronomy, physics and mathematics – and takes pains to explain things frequently passed over or taken for granted in other books. Using a problem-based approach, “Newton’s Gravity” explores the surprisingly basic mathematics behind gravity, the most fundamental force that governs the movements of satellites, planets, and the stars. Author Douglas W. MacDougal uses actual problems from the history of astronomy, as well as original examples, to deepen understanding of how discoveries were made and what they mean. “Newton’s Gravity” concentrates strongly on the development of the science of orbital motion, beginning with Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, each of whom is prominently represented. Quotes and problems from Galileo’s Dialogs Concerning Two New Sciences and particularly Newton’s Principia help the reader get inside the mind of those thinkers and see the problems as they saw them, and experience their concise and typically eloquent writing. This book enables students and curious minds to explore the mysteries of celestial motion without having to know advanced mathematics. It will whet the reader’s curiosity to explore further and provide him or her the tools (mathematical or physical) to do so.

Book excerpt: The Feynman Lectures on Gravitation are based on notes prepared during a course on gravitational physics that Richard Feynman taught at Caltech during the 1962-63 academic year. For several years prior to these lectures, Feynman thought long and hard about the fundamental problems in gravitational physics, yet he published very little. These lectures represent a useful record of his viewpoints and some of his insights into gravity and its application to cosmology, superstars, wormholes, and gravitational waves at that particular time. The lectures also contain a number of fascinating digressions and asides on the foundations of physics and other issues.Characteristically, Feynman took an untraditional non-geometric approach to gravitation and general relativity based on the underlying quantum aspects of gravity. Hence, these lectures contain a unique pedagogical account of the development of Einstein's general theory of relativity as the inevitable result of the demand for a self-consistent theory of a massless spin-2 field (the graviton) coupled to the energy-momentum tensor of matter. This approach also demonstrates the intimate and fundamental connection between gauge invariance and the principle of equivalence.

Book excerpt: A history of the attempts to test the predictions of Newtonian Gravity, describing in detail recent experimental efforts to verify both the inverse-square law and the Equivalence Principle. Interest in these questions has increased in recent years, as it has become recognised that deviations from Newtonian gravity could be a signal for a new fundamental force in nature. This is the first book devoted entirely to this subject, and will thus be useful to both graduate students and researchers interested in this field. It describes the ideas that underlie searches for such deviations, focusing on macroscopic tests. A comprehensive bibliography of some 450 entries supplements the text.

Book excerpt: Physics theory of everything about the gravity, energy and movement. Definition of energy and experiments with gravitational potential energy and mechanical energy. The fact that light deflects in a gravitational field exactly double than mass according to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, made me suspect that there must existed some special relationship between the causes of both deviations. The difference of Global Dynamics to the Theory of Relativity is that while Einstein uses kinetic energy to alter space-time and balance the planetary orbits; Global Dynamics finds an additional force or second component of atractis causa, adjusted also by kinetic energy, to explain the physical reality without altering it. The Global Gravity Law deserves special mention for implying a different explanation, which is consistent with common sense, about the decisive predictions of the General Theory of Relativity of Einstein by means of a small adjustment of Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. The three great natural phenomena of General Relativity of Einstein are also discussed and explained with the two components of gravity and its mathematical integration in the Law of Global Gravity within the new paradigm or theory of everything and, of course, within common sense; I am referring to the effect of the gravitational lens, the gravitational red shift of light and the precession of the perihelion of Mercury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was developed, Newton's law of gravitation and many other laws of physics cannot be derived from one grand underlying principle. Deriving Newton's law of gravitation or Einstein general relativity theory, would mean that gravity emerges from something else and that would mean that the only known Newton's law of universal gravity is no longer a fundamental law of physics.Although this might be true, I believe that everything must have an origin. I believe that there is a fundamental universal physical law from which all other known physical laws can be deduced. I also believe that the laws of physics are not picked at random but there exists an underlying principle from which they can be derived with ease. Failure for some minds to grasp this principle doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Because I was used to deriving and proving formulae in pure math, I didn't like the way the laws of physics were presented to me without proof. A physics tutor would just write down a set of physical laws without proof. There are so many physics books which still do the same thing.Being curious and passionate to finding out how I could derive all the laws of physics from one single equation is proof that this book would have never existed in the first place if had not discovered the hidden principle that underlies all physics.

Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller In Her Defense comes a riveting new thriller of betrayal and redemption in the nation's capital. Philip Barkley had come far enough in Washington to know where those proverbial bodies were buried, but not so far that he'd lie about it. In the capital, that was no-man's-land, and his fall from grace was swift. When personal tragedy accelerates his downward spiral, all that remains is his integrity, and it's the price of a fresh start. The disappearance of Senate Intelligence Committee aide Martin Green indicates a breach of national security. Senator Warren Young, the party's best chance to keep the White House, needs a credible report that the missing man was no spy. Barkley is required to oversee the investigation and deliver the "right" result. As the case progresses, the signs grow more troubling, and even an FBI agent isn't what she seems. The pursuit of Green leads across generations, a trail of deception and murder that began with a woman's fall from a Bronx rooftop almost fifty years earlier. Barkley's odyssey finally brings him to the door of a retired detective haunted by a case he never solved. Together, the two men seek justice -- and their own renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Newton's view, all objects exert a force that attracts other objects. That universal law of gravitation worked pretty well for predicting the motion of planets as well as objects on Earth and it's still used, for example, when making the calculations for a rocket launch. But unfortunately it cannot be derived from first principles. While Newton was able to formulate his law of gravity in his monumental work, he was deeply uncomfortable with the notion of "action at a distance" that his equations implied. In 1692, in his third letter to Bentley, he wrote:"That one body may act upon another at a distance through a vacuum without the mediation of anything else, by and through which their action and force may be conveyed from one another, is to me so great an absurdity that, I believe, no man who has in philosophic matters a competent faculty of thinking could ever fall into it."He never, in his words, "assigned the cause of this power". In all other cases, he used the phenomenon of motion to explain the origin of various forces acting on bodies, but in the case of gravity, he was unable to experimentally identify the motion that produces the force of gravity. Moreover, he refused to even offer a hypothesis as to the cause of this force on grounds that to do so was contrary to sound science. He lamented that "philosophers have hitherto attempted the search of nature in vain" for the source of the gravitational force, as he was convinced "by many reasons" that there were "causes hitherto unknown" that were fundamental to all the "phenomena of nature". These fundamental phenomena are still under investigation and, though hypotheses abound, the definitive answer has yet to be found."I have not yet been able to discover the cause of these properties of gravity from phenomena and I feign no hypotheses.... It is enough that gravity does really exist and acts according to the laws I have explained, and that it abundantly serves to account for all the motions of celestial bodies." NewtonIn this book gravity has been derived from first principles without any assumptions. What has been believed to be a fundamental force for years can actually be derived from first principles has this book explains. The derivation is simple and straight foward. The experiment to the derivation has also been proposed. This book will help us rethink Physics. In this book gravity has been derived from first principles without any assumptions.
