Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: September 7, 1922 I believe firmly that the citizenship of this country would be promoted and raised beyond computation if only there were some way of adequately teaching the principles of true religion to boys and girls, men and women. I look for no adjustment of these great disorders which now threaten the peace of our communities, which now threaten our industrial system, which threaten the security of property, wealth and acquired possessions, until men learn these great lessons of religion, until they learn that we cannot live in an established order of society until we are con siderate of each other, until we do regard the interests of our fellows as sacredly as we regard our own interest and our own Welfare. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 24, 1922 As I sat alone the following Sunday afternoon, my folks having gone to meeting, I began to reflect on my condition. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 5, 1922 Our third article reads: We 'believe that through the atone ment of Christ, all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. In other words we do not believe that a mere profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save people. We believe that as we are saved in this life by our industry, by our intelligence, by our labor, by our works, so will we be saved in the kingdom of our Father, when the battle of life is ended, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, upon which salvation is promised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 19, 1922 It is hurtful to conceive of religion as a negative thing, state, condition; on the contrary, it is impressively positive, requiring action, and the results of this life are not to be summed up in terms of what we have not done, what we have refrained from doing, only, but in terms of what we have tried to do, and in the measure of the effort we have put forth to accomplish something for good, which is the same thing as saying something for God. Mere immersion in water, and the laying on of hands, would not be, could not be, an ordinance recognizable and acceptable beyond the grave, were it not that these ordinances are prescribed and required; and, therefore, when administered to the prepared and receptive candidate, by the authority given of God, they become effective as means toward salvation and are indispensable to salvation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: February 23, 1922 Three thousand years ago the Israelites, being warned by a vision, went forth to wander for forty years in the Wilderness. In more recent times, indeed almost within the memory of living men, the Mormons, led also by a vision, went forth into a wilder ness which they have caused to blossom as the rose. I hold no brief for the religious beliefs of the founders of the Mormon Church - they may, for all my knowledge to the contrary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 30, 1922 The speaker then referred to the new and everlasting covenant and said that it was a contract between God and his people. Boys and girls who attend the schools and universities of the country should not think there is anything in the Gospel which would prevent them from accepting and developing a truth, for all truth is included in it. What is needed is an interpretation of the Gospel, and that interpretation should come through the institutions and auxiliaries of the Church, that the young may know there is nothing about it which would prevent them from developing all truth. He closed by bearing his testimony to the divinity of the latter-day work. Elder James E. Talmage was the next speaker. He said at times it is well for one to look at himself, but when he does so he should be careful of the mirror which he chooses for that purpose. So with the Church. It is well at times to become introspective. The speaker then referred to the early apostolic days of the Church. He showed how the Gospel spread until Paul said all had heard it. Then followed a period of apostasy. Pagan rites and ceremonies were introduced and a period of darkness resulted. Then came men who groped toward the light and attempted to bring about a reformation. At last, the speaker said, God again spoke from the heavens. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ the Son appeared again upon the earth. This Church has no mother church. It has sprung from no other; it was founded by Jesus Christ himself. Peter, James and John, the presidency of the Church in the days of old, have restored the authority of that Church. The Church has been re-established in these the latter days. While this may shock the ears of some, it should not. The Church of England declared many years before the coming forth of this Church in 1830 that there was a great apostasy in the world. Elder Talmage then read from Section 22 of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the new and everlasting covenant, and from the New Testament in which it is called unwise to put new wine into old bottles or new cloth upon old garments. That was to show that there was to be no compromise between the things of God and the things of men. The Lord is not leaving his Church without guidance, but is speaking through those who represent him upon the earth. Elder Talmage closed by urging his hearers to follow the counsel of the leaders of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The purpose in the following remarks is to manifest that the premises have no good foundation upon which to rest, and, as a consequence, the claimed inspiration of the organization of this Church is not affected in the least by their alleged decisive assault at this point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: June 22, 1922 The services began with the congregation and choir singing the hymn O ye mountains high, after which the choir sang an anthem. President Penrose, in announcing Elder Roberts as the speaker, in formed the congregation that he had lately been called to preside over the Eastern States mission and expected to leave within a very short time. Elder Roberts said it is truly a pleasure to meet with the saints in the Tabernacle. He declared he was grateful for the appoint ment he had received, but said he was fearful that his friends may be disappointed in what he would be able to accomplish. It is with a most humble spirit, he said, that he undertakes this work. He said he realized it is a great, work as the mission includes twelve states and the District of Columbia, with a population of thirty-three million. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: October 26, 1922 John the Revelator saw the restoration in the latter days of the everlasting Gospel. His great vision of the flying angel did not refer to the preaching of the Gospel in the days of the Saviour and the ancient twelve, for when John saw the vision nearly one hundred years had passed since Christ was born. It referred, as the Saviour told John in the beginning, to things that shall be hereafter. The Gospel was to be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, showing that every nation, kindred, tongue and people would be without it, but would hear it by means of its restoration in the latter days, when all the dispensa tions of the past will be united and will flow into this one, as the rills and rivers flow into the ocean. All the past dispensations point down to this time, and find their fulfillment herein. Adam's dispensation has its fruition in this age of the world; Enoch's, Noah's, Abraham's, Moses', all these dispensations must be bound together and become one in this the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. That is the message that the world has nicknamed Mormonism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 26, 1922 Now, in this day of pestilence and scourge, let us prepare in every way we can to resist the inroads. Of disease. Pray? Yes, pray without ceasing, pray without words, but let those words be the expression of the prayer in our souls; pray with deeds that the prayer may have more force and be more effective, The mere knowledge of what we ought to do is not a saving power. Once a great scourge of cholera broke out in a certain European city. It was found that most of the cases were confined to, or could be traced to, a particular district of the city. That district derived its water supply from an old distributing system the other part of the city was supplied with water through a new system and the purity of the water was more carefully guarded in the new system than in the old. A capable scientist suspected at once that there must be the intimate relation of cause and effect between the water used in the infected part of the city and the virulent scourge there. He made his examination, made chemical analysis and microscopical tests, and he saw the cholera germs in the water. He developed the germs in cultures, the seed of which was contained in a drop of that infected water; and he gave warning to the people, telling them whence the scourge of the contagion and warning them not to drink any unboiled water. Boiling the water would insure the death of the cholera bacillus, for like other living things, these bacilli are limited in their ability to withstand excessively high temperatures. There were many who had faith in him, not a dead useless faith that amounted to mere curiosity, or at most, mental assent, but a faith that stirred them to action, that made them light their fires and boil the water for domestic use, and they were saved. There were others who possibly thought well of the suggestion, but who had not faith enough or energy enough or common sense enough to apply it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: March 9, 1922 I appreciate your frankness and the friendliness that prompts your suggestion that in justice to myself and my friends we should see that the evil stories that are being published about us in Great Britain be effectively rebutted. It may interest you to know that during my more than two years in Great Britain I was unable to find a single newspaper that would Open its columns to me to refute the slanders that were repeated from time to time about my people. I realise that many people in Great Britain believe that our mission in that land is to inveigle young girls into the Church, and ship them to Utah for improper purposes. That falsehood has been published many times during the years that are passed, but the evidence to prove it has never been produced, for the simple reason than it cannot be.
