Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: December 18, 1913 The following illustration will serve to show the unreason ableness of the idea: Suppose that a king of unbounded sympathy and unlimited resources formed in one part of his dominion a great society for the alleviation of distress which existed among his subj ects. Imagine him, without either breaking up the society, or indicating that the work is not to be continued, removing the greater number of its members into another district of his empire, where distress is even more widespread than ih the locality where they had hitherto been stationed. What should we say if it were told us that the great society does nothing in the way of relief, except in the smaller of the areas of suffering? Why weaken the good work by taking away so many of the members from a place where they are so badly wanted, and placing them in a spot where although there is plenty of scone, they must not labor for the cause! And yet that is the light in which the mission of the Church of Christ is regarded by many. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: November 20, 1913 We might divide humanity into two classes - they who follow in the footsteps of others and merely exist, and they who act for themselves and We can go in leading-strings throughout our lives, doing certain things simply because someone else did the same, and in this way never accomplish anything praiseworthy. Or we can live a life of individuality, start some truth to rolling, and eventually' attain that Vision which has long been cherished in our hearts. The two courses are optional with us. However, the option is predicated upon certain laws which must be obeyed. In obeying these laws it may necessitate sacrifice of momentary pleasures. But by the use of our inherent reasoning faculties, and by application to the right course, as God reveals it to us, we can surmount most difficulties. Life is no idle dream. Our all-wise Creator has placed us here for a grand and glorious purpose, and it behooves each of as to improve each shining moment. We are not going to achieve any of our high ambitions by procrastination. We can not say, I will begin anew next year, or next month, nor next week; no, not even to-morrow, or in a few moments. We should sense the significance of that maxim of inestimable worth, Do it now, not only saying to our inner self, I will try, but, we can and should, absolutely Do it now. Do not put if off till to-morrow, The present is all thou hast, For the future Will soon be present, And the present will soon be p'ast. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: November 27, 1913 My feeling, my earnest desire for good, is stronger than ever. It grows with age. I.see more clearly to-'day than ever before, the end of my mission in the world, that my time is growing shorter. I reflect upon the past, and often wonder how much of the valuable time the Lord has allotted me in this life, have I wasted in folly and useless things; and how much of it havei employed in that which was essential to my salvation, to my growth and development in the knowledge of God and in the' understanding of His truth? I assure you that while it is true that, for the most part of my life, I have been engaged in this ministry, in the work of the Lord, to the best of my understanding, and the ability that the Lord has given me, when I look back upon my life I can see much wasted time, many unimproved moments, numerous things that I have engaged in that were comparatively, at least, unnecessary and hurtful rather than beneficial, and yet nothing that was seriously wrong. There are many things to - day-indulged in by mankind, and by too many of those who have professed belief in the divine mission of the Christ and of His servant Joseph Smith, that are not only contrary to the word of the Lord, and in opposition to the spirit of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but are both in opposition to the Spirit of the Lord and in opposition to the life and health and purity of the souls of men. Some of these evils seem to be grow ing among us. Go where I will, or where I do - and I am going from week to week and from month to month, here and there, in the discharge of my duty - I see evidence of great disrespect to the requirements of the gospel _of Jesus Christ, and I not only see it among the adult citizens of the kingdom, and members of the Church, but I see the bad effects of the example that these adult members of the Church are having upon the youth of Zion. It is neither my wish nor purpose to advertise the weaknesses and imperfections of those who should be Latter-day Saints, and whose lives Should be absolutely above reproach; it is not my wish nor desire to magnify the weaknesses and the imperfections of men; but I see things, day after day, which I think should be corrected, asfar as it is possible for them to be corrected. Let me, without doing it in the spirit of accusation, without charging evil upon the people, speak of some of the things I see, to some extent. I thank the Lord that the evil is no more extensive than it is; I am very grateful that it is confined within the limits to which it is confined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 14, 1913 Small wonder that this inverted pyramid of Oppression, false doctrine, and presumption collapsed from its own top-heaviness. Small wonder, also, that the unthinking element supposes that massacre, murder, violence and bloody doings, in general, are necessary accompaniments of theocracy. This explains many of the wanton charges made against the Mormons; it was associa tion of ideas merely, We Should remember, however, that the word connotes God-government, the scheme promulgated in the Bible; also, that Mormonism advocates neither the first, nor yet the worst form. It merely claims for itself, if it makes a claim in this particular, the same dignity as the visible agent of God which all other bodies assert on their own behalf and such right is guaranteed under our Constitution. However, such is the soul and substance of the famous political menace, in consequence of which, again, we are urged to help quash Mormonism. But, in view of general Shortcomings, why stop with this Church? Why not completely purge the Augean stables of American religion, befouled, as they are, by the cattle of false doctrine, hypocrisy, and Christless self-complacency, and begin anew with the faith that the Savior meant precisely what He said on all matters whatsoever, and nothing else? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: October 9, 1913 Organ of Christ, God raised up voices in the wilderness of spiritual darkness and decay to establish His balance of power. What happened to many of His instruments is too well known to need rehearsal here. We could refer to the thousands of martyrs who were actually hung alive upon meat hooks; others that were burned at the stake because of their faithfulness to the testimony which they had of the truth, and of the divinity of their missions. We can't eulogize them all, but we can at least call to mind two or three of their representatives, monumental characters among the illustrious men of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: September 22, 1913 The meeting was thrown Open for the discussion Of the subject, and many important questions were asked and answered by the elders. The assembly sang the hymn, See the mighty angel flying. Elder George Duffin gave a paper on Tact in Presenting the Gospel Message. Explained that inasmuch as the gospel has been restored, with the command to carry it unto every nation, kindred, tongue and people, a great responsibility rests upon the handful Of elders who are sent forth to proclaim it. In order to be tactful in presenting the gospel message, we must have the following qualifications Love for the work humility; sincerity, and Obedience. Our authority permits us to take the positive stand and say, Thus saith the Lord. We must never contradict a statement unless we have ample reason for doing so. Seldom debate truths, as they cannot be changed. Study the person with whom you are conversing; remember that he has been born and raised under, and indoctrinated in the tenets of his religion, and it is natural for him to try to defend them. Re cognize the virtues of his religion acknowledge the beauty in all things, and be cheerful and Optimistic in your work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: February 6, 1908 Let us see what the will of the Father was as revealed through Christ. In the first place it was and is the will of God that men believe in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and accept Him as their Savior and Redeemer. When certain people asked the Lord, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? His answer was, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (john 6: 28, This shows us the first step we have to take in order to become one with the Father - to believe in Christ whom He has sent, and in the great and infinite atonement which He has made for our Sins. Christ came into the world to break the bonds of death and redeem all Adam's descendants fro-m the effects of the original sin. Asa result, all men born of Eve in this mortal world will live again as resurrected persons - this because of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Christ our Lord. There is no death. None of God's Spirit children, born. In mortality through our mother Eve, will suffer annihilation. It is likely if men only understood the truth relative to these matters, all of them would have. A feeling of thankfulness; and Mormonism - the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ in its fulness through the labours of the Prophet Joseph Smith - gives all Latter day Saints additional cause for thank fulness. As a result of the work and teachings of Joseph Smith, their faith in the realityof the earth-life of Jesus Christ and in the saving, power of His mission is so strong with many of them that it has become a certitude - immensely more than a faith which is more or less nebulous, having little or no influence on daily conduct - and a certitude, or at least a firm conviction, that results in their making daily efforts to live genuine Christian lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 86: March 6, 1924 Joseph Smith did not, out of superior wisdom which he had, or because of his great learning, nor his deeper insight into the scriptures, excell the men of his generation or the generations that preceded him, in magnifying and in glorifying the mission and the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was qualified by heaven to accomplish the great work of setting before the world once again a true conception of the Father and of His Son, and of the Gospel which the Son introduced in the meridian of time.
